Another problem emerging is that replies made from the website do not include the message the writer is responding to. I have not a clue what the response below means.

I would have to go back through messages to find one that had two questions to find out what the questions were.

I’ve been wondering why this kind of message has been suddenly appearing on my lists. From experimenting with ways to work around the lack of forwarding, save, and print functions, I discovered that these are coming from people who read and reply online.

People are accustomed to the message being added below their comment. They don’t write messages that make sense independently. They have to paste the message into their reply. Not sure retraining will have any effect.

If that is the case, and it seems that you are going to be consistently running out of storage space, then it seems that you should consider upgrading to a group subscription that offers more storage. Look at the options in the Pricing page.?/static/pricing

How do we forward your message to bump it up?

There are a couple of ways but all start with joining the beta group, if you haven't already.

The simplest is to click reply on the message on site. You could then write a brief statement in support of whichever part(s) of my suggestion you agree with. It may help to describe your groups situation as a use case for the functionality. That topic is old enough that it has been moderated, but that's ok.

Do we copy and paste into a new message?

Writing a new topic would be more emphatic. You could write your own suggestion and cite my message for details. You needn't copy / paste it, or not all of it (it is lengthy). You can just give the message number or the link to it, as I did.

My service says it received your message from

But I have no reason to believe that Groups.io always sends from that same server. Nor any reason to believe that it doesn't either, I suppose.

The question is what header fields you email service uses, and how it uses them, when it decides whether to accept or reject an inbound email message. If they can apply a whitelist to the "envelope from" (aka Sender) address they should whitelist the groups.io domain.

We've added the groups.io page as a "safe" site to the firewall, but
this is still happening.

Safe for web access would not likely have any bearing on email delivery.

In your Subscription page you can look at the Email Delivery History tab, in the Recent Bounces section, to see what error code your email service gave to groups.io the last few times your service rejected a group posting.

That information would likely be useful to your IT department as well.

I have just been told that it will be very important to be able to export the names and/or the email addresses of every one who voted yes in a poll. I did a search and found Toby’s suggestion of copying results and pasting them to word, but it sounded like it was used for the yes/no totals. I assume that I could go to the view results screen where the names are listed, ?but we will normally have over 250 people voting. I don’t have an example yet, but that screen doesn’t look like there is an infinite scroll, and it seems somewhat clunky with the numbers that I am talking about. ?Have I missed a better way?

If the login cookie is analogous to your key fob, then it is like needing to enter a PIN on the fob after 30 days, or email the manufacturer (your option), to have access to the special features of your high-end car (engine compartment, track mode, suspension adjustments, ludicrous acceleration, etc.). Or you can just continue driving around in "standard mode" - post and read by email - without needing to re-authorize the special features.

Of course that analogy depends on how you (a member) normally use the group. If you use it primarily by email then you would seldom need to log in. If you use it primarily by web then you're already a frequent visitor to the site, and having to re-validate your login once a month doesn't seem (to me) out of line compared to other sites I've used where login is required.

In the meantime I realised that one can, in any case, see the full headers of one's own group messages.

This should help the support guys at dreamhost.com to ascertain what happened to emails that were apparently lost during their mail server upgrade on Tuesday last week. If anyone else uses Dreamhost and lost emails during their server upgrade, I would be interested in hearing from you.

On a large list of 3,000 we don’t allow attachments. The message needs to make sense without the attachment or refer to a website or a document put in the files. Otherwise we would have the same problem with a huge numbers of attachments, most of which are irrelevant. If an old attachment is deleted, then the old message is no longer useful.

Thank you, I have that set like that. I still have to delete over 7,000 attachments by hand. Down to 6358 attachments now and still can't upload a file.

Is there any way to stop attachments from storing at the group web
page without disabling attachments to our members email?

For the Out of Space setting Select "Delete Old Attachments"; under Message Policies on your group's Settings page.

I haven't tested this to see if it will let you upload files or photos when you're at or near quota, but I think it ought to. If not, maybe that should be a feature suggestion.
