Re: Wiki instruction or tutorial

Gary,

Does anyone have a good wiki generation and maintenance tutorial or how-to resource to guide n00bs?

We have the beginnings of something in GMF's Wiki. If you or anyone can help flesh it out please do so.

There's also this about the message editor, the Wiki page editor is very similar.

Reply from SMS/MMS Messages #reply-to-group

Good morning,

I have setup a group that will be used to send notifications from a device that monitors the temperature in one of our buildings.? I have added my cell 'email' address for MMS messages (1234567890@...) as a member of the group that is moderated. I received the invitation to join the group and was able to successfully join.? I sent a test message to the group from another member and received the text message on my iPhone.? I then replied to the message via text but it was not received to the group.? I then tested a reply from a regular gmail account and the reply was received as it should.?

Is there anything special that would need to be done to allow the reply to get back to the group or am I out of luck with this?? The idea of the group is to allow several members of our department to receive the alert notification when a temperature is too high or low in our building, then an individual user could reply back to the message they received via text to their cell phone, to let the other users know that they were responding to the alarm.

Thank you for a great experience here at groups.io!? Since initially joining, I have found the interface is extremely easy to navigate.? And best of all, IT WORKS!? This coming from a Yahoo group that I had to abandon due to multiple failures of the services no longer working.

Thanks again,
Brett

member was unsubbed

A good member of mine was unsubbed because something went into her spam. I could not put her back. She had an awful time of this. She checks her spam every day. So I am not sure why this happened. I dont want to lose members because of this. Is there any way you can stop this from happening. I already have lost a few members who would not come back. I really love iogroups but this feature is very bad. Also the email photos I have to delete every day. These are two problems I have with yahoo.
Thanks

Anita

Wiki instruction or tutorial

Does anyone have a good wiki generation and maintenance tutorial or how-to resource to guide n00bs?

Anything that is particularly applicable to GIO would be very appreciated.

I did some wiki work about 10 years ago and I'm kind of fumbling around with it in a private subgroup, but I would like to have something "good" that I can send my subgroup moderators to in order to help them learn without relying on my failing memory and fumbling discoveries.

Thanks.

Re: Can I re-order Wiki pages?

Thanks Chris, ?I set up a Home page and noticed that I could insert the individual Wiki page in any order. ?That's exactly what I wanted, so I am happy now.

I think it means change the order in which they are listed if there is not a Home Page with links set up; the group I moderate does not have a Home Page, just a list of the various wiki pages. The list will always appear in alphabetical order, which might result in members "reading them in the wrong order"

However, for alphabetical order read alphanumerical order, so it is perfectly possible to set the pages in the order required by putting a number as the first character, rather than the initial letter of the page title. This is how I set it up in our wiki; not perfect but it serves. :) Now I haven't put it to the test in the wiki section but if it mirrors how things behave within photo albums then things can go a little awry if the numbering runs 1 to 9, followed by 10, a bit like early version of Windows did in directories; the solution to that is for the numbers 1 to 9 to be typed as 01 to 09, followed by 10. The page order will be determined by the number, not the initial letter.

Again I haven't put it to the test but I strongly suspect that it wll go wrong again if the numbering goes above 99, in which case the answer will be to list 1 to 99 as 001 to 099, but that would result in a gigantic wiki, or an equally gigantic photo album. I suspect that would be a purely theoretical problem, not a real one.

Re: Member removed for sending spam only not

Linda,

She found other group messages in her spam folder and I told her to
add the group email address to her contacts list.
Don't be shocked if that doesn't help.

The group's posting address is not in the From field of messages from the group. If her email interface considers only the From address when evaluating the message with respect to the contacts list there won't be a match.

Different email services have different mechanisms. In some you can add a filter to move group messages (detected by the group tag in the subject line, or the group's posting address in the To field) to one's Inbox, bypassing the spam filter. In others persistently marking misplaced messages as "not spam" is the recommended solution.

Re: Group default settings for Photos

Jeremy,

And also that it should be possible for group owners to set - for such
things - a group default (that can be overridden by users), based on
their group and their understanding of its members, in the settings
section.
A difficulty I see with that is "when does it apply".

It can't be each time I visit the page, because then I'd be in the same boat I'm in now, but with a group-chosen default instead of a site-chosen one.

Applying the group default only when I (the member) have never used the viewing control (in the current browser) would suit me fine, but might make some owners feel like their setting isn't working.

Applying the group default at each fresh login might be a suitable compromise. But like most compromises runs the risk of satisfying no one.

Another difficulty (though mostly work for Mark) is that this would now introduce a per-group dependence in the user's view controls. Too, as a person with multiple group subscriptions, I might find it disconcerting to have the view order change just because I navigated to another group.

One might expect such groups to be easy to find.

At least a couple are (among other results):

Hello All!

I think I remember someone on this list mentioning newsletters or groups that you can advertise your own groups in? Is that at all accurate? And if so, can anyone point me in the right direction of these groups?

Thanks so much!

Re: Group default settings for Photos

I would agree that the system should remember a user's choice of order for each group's photos, rather them have to change it each time.?

And also that it should be possible for group owners to set - for such things - a group default (that can be overridden by users), based on their group and their understanding of its members, in the settings section.?

You can create a "home" wiki page that contains links to the other pages and present them in any order or categorization that you want.?

Other than that, I don't know what you might mean by "re-ordering" them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Can I re-order Wiki pages?

If so then how do I do it please?

Re: Group default settings for Photos

Edited

Dotty,

Yes, I know that each subscriber can change the sort order when
viewing the photos online. But that selection reverts to the default
alphabetical listing each time the group is visited.
This would be my suggestion: the site ought to remember the visitor's viewing options when he/she leaves the page and comes back.

I would much prefer to be able to choose a default for the group that
will sort them chronologically by the date posted.
I'm actually against putting viewing options like this into settings or preferences pages. I detest them because they're never what I want right now, but changing it means navigating my way to wherever it is set, then finding my way back to what I was doing. That's not so hard, usually, but it is an interruption to my train of thought.

My objection is even stronger when I have to beg a group owner to change it because (as a member) I can't.

Has this been requested on Beta previously?
I found a reference to being able to sort Albums by date, which has been implemented (albeit without memory). In a quick glance I didn't see a reference to making a group (or individual) option to preset the order, or to remember the order.
