Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Bruce,

CHANGE: Only rate limit messages to members from other members,
not mods/owners.

I assume this refers to the Direct Mail [DM] functionality available
via the user profiles?
I believe so. Possibly also "Private" messages sent as replies to postings.

Re: "Comment" field in the application for membership screen

Chris,

That's sort of OK as far as it goes, but it will not capture those who
try to join by email - only those who apply via the web UI.
There are a number of ways this can be handled.

One of which would be to include in the confirmation email (sent after a +subscribe command) a link to a page where the user can provide the requested information. That link could include a unique coding so that no log in is required.

Re: Question about approving a moderated post #moderation

When you select Approve, only that message is approved.? If you are using NuM, that count is decremented by one.? Approve and Unmoderate does exactly that, approves the message and removes moderation for the individual.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log covers two weeks:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: Display Owner/Mod badges on group sidebar.
Yay! Now when someone writes in with a question that implies that they aren't the group owner when they think they are, I have an easy place for them to look and then tell me.

NEW: Added domain/subdomain setup information to the help page.
For enterprise groups only.

CHANGE: Updated and added sections about our data processing agreement
and other aspects of GDPR.
Evidently won't go live until probably Monday:

I had not been including updates to the API in the #changelog reports.
I will start doing so now.
The API subgroup of beta is not very active. I wonder if we'll start hearing of any interesting apps.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

CHANGE: Only rate limit messages to members from other members, not
mods/owners.
SYSADMIN: Migrated one of the DNS servers to a new machine.
API: New group field: subgroup_category_id.
NEW: Subgroup categories.
NEW: Removed scrolling and reformatted subgroup list page.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: How to stop receiving your own email posting?

Whenever you click on a link in an group email that says "view/reply online," groups.io automatically opens a response box. You have to remember to click on the "Discard" button to close it or you'll end up with a bunch of these "drafts."

I do not like this behavior and have complained about it in beta. But others seem to prefer it, so it is what it is.

Hope this helps,

Re: How to stop receiving your own email posting?

ken,

How do we stop an emailed post from being send to the person who
posted it?
You don't. Groups.io always includes the poster when distributing the messages to the group. Subject to the poster's delivery setting of course.

To clarify Duane's comment about Gmail users, it is Gmail that normally hides the poster's own messages when returned from the group. The account option to always receive your own messages implements a work-around to that Gmail behavior. Another work-around is to post via the group's pages instead of via Gmail.

Also why does IO haphazardly put a msg in DRAFTS.. not saving drafts
or canceling a post. But mesgs (not all) still end up in that location
A draft is created anytime you begin a message but don't either send or explicitly discard it. That means if you close the browser tab, or click on a link to navigate to another page a draft is created to save your work in progress.

Question about approving a moderated post #moderation

Good afternoon.?

When approving a post it says. Approve. Approve and unmoderate?? (I'm working from memory here) . I want to approve posts but leave on moderated status. Is there a way to do that???

Very much appreciate your help.

Best,
Donnell Bell?

Re: How to stop receiving your own email posting?

Yes I would think that¡¯s how it should work and expected suchly. But I have a bunch of drafts for messages that I haven¡¯t backed out of and were posted normally. I¡¯ll keep an ? on it.

Thx.

Re: direct add question

Al,

When using the direct add option in a premium group, if all addresses
submitted don¡¯t get added, is there a list somewhere of those that
didn¡¯t get added?
Didn't the Direct Add page refresh to a results page? Maybe that only gave a summary, but I thought it also listed the failures.

As far as I know the only addresses that don't get added are those that are invalid. That could be syntax errors like "user2example.com" (missing @ sign) or disallowed domains (example.com, groups.io).

When copying a batch of addresses from a Yahoo Group many may immediately go on Bouncing status, but they still got added (and show in your group's Members list) even though the address has delivery problems.

Re: Are Transferred Members actually utilizing new Groups.io

Don,

Is there a way to tell which transferred members are actually signing
in or activating their Groups.io membership.
As Bruce mentioned, their membership (subscription) is active immediately. Meaning that they start receiving posts from the group and they can post to the group by email.

They can also log in to Groups.io, by entering the email address that is subscribed to your group on the login page, and immediately access your group's web pages as a member.

You (as group owner/moderator) can't tell when they log into Groups.io or visit your group's web pages unless they do something like post using the group's page or change a subscription setting that isn't available by email. That is, you only have indirect evidence not a definitive status indication.

Re: How to stop receiving your own email posting?

Those that choose to receive emails will always get the ones they send (unless they use gmail, then it can be turned off.)

The saving of drafts isn't haphazard for me.? It only happens when I start a topic or reply, then leave the page without canceling.? That's the way it's supposed to work.

Re: Direct Add with "Special Notice" email option

Tom,

I'm about to do a direct add of several hundred members to a new group
transferring from Yahoo. Several of them have "Special notice"
selected as their email option.
The transfer agent would have copied that option along with their email address. But I think you knew that.

In the direct add instructions (at the bottom of the direct add page)
Special notice is not noted as an option to append to the entry. Is
that an option, and if so what is the format?
Unfortunately I do not have a premium group to test that at the moment. If you have a spare email address you could Direct Add to the group you could test it using that.

Would it be "John Doe <JohnDoe@...> special"?
That would be my first guess.

And I assume that if that is in a CSV file the entire line is in the
same cell in column 1?
As you discovered in beta, one has to be cautious with CSV files, as often the default is to use quotes around each text value, and that breaks the format for Groups.io.

When I Direct Add (or Invite) from a spreadsheet I just copy the column and paste it into the Direct Add box, without saving as a .csv or .txt file. Even with thousands of members the clipboard in a modern system should be able to handle it.

There is no provision for merging groups, nor is Mark inclined to do so, as he replied when someone else him asked about doing it.

Re: View / Change Plan Tab Missing

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Art,

Once I go to the "Upgrade" tab, it appears that I am missing the "View ? Change Plan" tab.? I see it in another group that I am the owner of.? See image.?

That's ... odd.

Contrary to what Peter said, if you are an owner of the group then you already have the Billing Permission (and all others). To confirm, when logged into Groups.io, and looking at that group's Update page, what badge do you see next to the Home button?

If it says Mod then you aren't an owner of the group, or at least aren't logged in with the email address which is an owner.

Otherwise I'm not sure what's going on. I thought the way you made yourself payor was to use the View/Change Plan page to pay for a billing option. And the only way the question of whether or not you're the payor would come up is if someone else had payed to upgrade your group. But your screenshot shows that the group is still on the Free plan.

So in your shoes, if you are logged in as an Owner and no one else in GMF comes up with an explanation I'd be inclined to send that screenshot to [email protected] and ask "How?"

"Comment" field in the application for membership screen

This topic has arisen following a post on beta from Patti Sliney, but that is not the best place for a disccusion about it, given that it was under Site Updates. Patti's post included the following:

Any chance adding a "Comment" field in the application for membership screen, and having the option as a list owner/mod, to make that field mandatory?? We've got this request on our Wish List, just hoping we can have that added in.? We've tried the work around, which is moderating all our list membership, then sending an email message to the prospective member, asking them to tell us why they wish to join our group, but we are getting less than a 10% response.

That's sort of OK as far as it goes, but it will not capture those who try to join by email - only those who apply via the web UI. Have you not tried using the Pending Membership facility, which one way or another results in all applicants automatically receiving a message (once the Pending Membership message has been set up) inviting them to provide a simple explanation about why they want to join. It is not a "workaround"; it is an established method of sorting out the wheat from teh chaff right at the outset. The fact that you only get a 10% response may also apply using this method, but it's simple; if they don't reply they don't get in.

Chris

Re: clarification on direct add feature

Adam,

When I Direct Add to a subgroup the members are receiving two
notifications, one that a moderator has added them and one that
appears generic.
The "You've been added" notice cannot be avoided. You can add your own text to it, but you can't edit the boilerplate or turn it off.

The other is likely to be your group's Welcome notice. There is a default Welcome notice for each group, but you can edit it as you please or make it not Active (if not Active it is not sent). See the Member Notices tab of your group's Settings page.

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Peter,

I LOVE the bulk operations feature. Will this be rolled out to PHOTOS
section anytime soon.
I don't know. There is a related to-do item:

There are also topics in the beta group that relate:

You could chime in on one of those topics with your own suggestion(s) on the topic.

THanks Shal for your efforts!
You're welcome, but I'm only reporting and commenting on what's new. Mark is the one that makes it happen.

Speaking of which, he posted this week's changelog this morning. Which means I'll be commenting on it here a bit later.

Re: Move a message into a different topic

Tim,

I keep getting messages about previous topics, but with a new 'topic'
heading. How can I move them into the appropriate topic please?
That's a very common issue, on forums as well as email lists.

As Gerald mentioned, there is the topic merge function in Groups.io that will allow you to gather these "strays" together.

That's likely to get much easier to use as soon as Mark pushes the bulk action feature to the site - right now it is just in testing:

Note, if you moderate messages in your group you can also edit a pending message's Subject line to assign it to the correct topic before it posts. When doing this I find it helps to copy/paste the subject from the existing topic - the match must be exact. Catching them while they are pending can be a bit tedious, but it avoids the cascade of email replies under the obsolete subject line that Bruce mentioned.

No I did not receive that email

Some other things to try:
Have you received an email from groups.io that says "We've approved your group <groupname> [at] groups.io and you can now invite people to it and post to it".? If not, the group is not live yet.? The address that received that email is the owner.

You can also go to the Search page (/search) and search for the name you used to create it.? If it's there, the group is live.? Go to the group's home page and click on the group owner email address and send a message to the owner.? If you're the owner, you'll get the email.? Unfortunately, it will be addressed To: <group>+owner, not the owner's actual email.? Depending on how you have your email setup, you might be able to discern what address received it.? Or in the headers there will be a line like "Received: from web01.groups.io .... by ... for <email>" where <email> will the owner's address.
