Re: Sidebar - Gmail dotted email addresses
Ellen,
Odd that they needed any information from you just to invalidate the incorrect email address. Just the fact that you received the email and are not the person named ought to have been enough. Oh well.
It doesn't happen quite that easily - in the case cited by Jeremy the victim must act on a request for updated credit card info without noticing that there is an inconsistency in either the card number or the address cited in the request. Hence Moral 1 - always be suspicious of confirmation requests that arrive "out of the blue". But yes, the bad guys are always looking for an angle. Re: How to move Active (but apparently abandoned by unresponsive group owner) Yahoo Groups???
George, Unfortunately, it was set up as a private, restricted group, on , before Yahoo took over. ? I don't think that has any bearing on the situation. I was talking about what privileges you have, as a moderator. Using PG Offline might be my only option at this point. If you don't have the requisite privileges, and can't contact someone who does, then yes that may be the only thing left. Fortunately you can Invite (or Direct Add, if you upgrade to premium) the entire Y!Group Membership list by pasting the entire list (one address per line) into the Invite page. If there are more than twenty (in any 24-hour period) your action will be held temporarily for review by Groups.io, but that shouldn't deter you - approval is normally fairly quick (less than a day). Letting non group members post to group
In one of my old Yahoo groups, we allowed non members to post without moderation, in order to ask questions. In GIO, I only see an option for this that has the posts by non-subscribers moderated. Is there a way to allow non-subscribers to post unmoderated? I also see there is an option in Integrations that says ¡°Create a receive-only email address that posts to your group¡±. Is that the same thing? How does it work, or if it differs, how so? I can¡¯t find anything in the Help section about it. Thanks for any help.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý¡°So I think in Ellen's case the problem may
actually be fraud... (and one that, from what she said, Apple are aware
of)¡±
?
I hadn¡¯t thought of it being a fraud. When I
got the msg with the payment due, I was upset because this happened once before
with my eastlink acct. I¡¯m still getting email from different people meant for a
dentist office on the East Coast. Eastlink keeps telling me they¡¯re working on
it. No dots involved there... and I¡¯m not getting billed for anything. It¡¯s just
a strange error somewhere inconveniencing a lot of people.
?
However, I had to tell Apple where I lived and
I gave them my phone # (they didn¡¯t ask for it, but I gave it to them anyway)
They did check somehow and got back to me and said it was fine. Just scrap the
email and don¡¯t worry about it. Scary to think that people can order things
online and someone else has to pay for it because of a dot. On the other hand,
if you do an email addy without a dot, you could end up with messages going
somewhere else? Not a good thing on either side of the equation.

addresses ?
Jeremy,
?
I would suggest that this is all down to the question: 'When is an e-mail address not an e-mail address?' Answer: 'When it's an id.' ?
Correct.
?
And any
third-party using an email address as an ID must not presume anything about the
semantics of the user portion. The only safe assumption is that each unique
spelling is a unique individual. Dots are not the only issue, you even must
assume that capitalization might matter: John@... may not be the
same individual as john@....
Moral 2: if somebody's signing up to your service with an e-mail as id, do your best to ensure it is theirs... ?
Correct again. This is why Groups.io requires that a user confirm their
email address (prove that they received a notice sent to that address) before
the address can be used to participate. If your group's Members list has any
email addresses bearing the NC badge, this is what the owner of that address has
not done - Not Confirmed.
? And this discrepancy - that if your e-mail address is ab@~ , and somebody can use a.b@~ as 'their' id (but which is your email), then it is a security loophole: see (and other responses to googling 'google email netflix security fail' )? ?
I think
Moral 1 is simpler, and applies no matter what email service you use: never
confirm an account when you didn't, just a moment ago, originate the
confirmation request.
?
So I think in Ellen's case the problem may actually be fraud... (and one that, from what she said, Apple are aware of) ?
Only if
she had confirmed an account using the non-dotted address. Otherwise it might
just have been a typo that misdirected the other person's message to her.

Unfortunately, it was set up as a private, restricted group, on egroups.com, before Yahoo took over.? I have sent another email to the owner of the group as well as to the TVR Car Club's HQ.? Using PG Offline might be my only option at this point.

Re: Sidebar - Gmail dotted email addresses
I would suggest that this is all down to the question: 'When is an e-mail address not an e-mail address?' Answer: 'When it's an id.'
AIUI Google is following the standards - any e-mail sent to an ~@gmail address goes to them, they are sending it to the correct mail box (that they have provided) for that e-mail address - and they are, as is their right under the standard, ignoring any dots in the 'pre-@' part the address (which is purely their business). So ab@gmail.~ and a.b@gmail.~ are both valid addresses for the same destination - and if an e-mail is sent to both, the destination mail box will (or at least should) get two e-mails. But anything using an e-mail address as an id isn't bound by, or using, e-mail standards - typically I think they just check it has an @ in the middle, without worrying about anybodyelse's rules that may (or may not) comply with the standard. And this discrepancy - that if your e-mail address is ab@~ , and somebody can use a.b@~ as 'their' id (but which is your email), then it is a security loophole: see (and other responses to googling 'google email netflix security fail' )? So I think in Ellen's case the problem may actually be fraud... (and one that, from what she said, Apple are aware of) Moral: if you have a gmail address, be aware, and be suspicious of any (money related in particular) e-mails that unexpectedly arrive, addressed to a wrongly dotted version of it. (But note that, as it is 'your' address, you can always go and get the password reset) Moral 2: if somebody's signing up to your service with an e-mail as id, do your best to ensure it is theirs... Re: True permalink for photos?
#suggestion
Okay, thanks both. Tagged as a suggestion, but if not dealt with from the historical thread, I guess not a priority. It does make the usefulness of a photo url questionable to anything other than the groups.io album functionality. Oh well, {sigh} ;-)

Re: How to move Active (but apparently abandoned by unresponsive group owner) Yahoo Groups???
I suspect, as Shal says, you aren't going to be able to "port over" using the easy-transfer method.? Reality sucks sometimes.? What you can do (IF you can look at the member list of the inactive yahoo list) is download the membership roster in .csv format, then "invite" all of them individually to join a mirror list on groups.io.? You won't be able to move the message history over but you can download the photos and files to your own computer and then upload them to the new list.? Lot of trouble, but it will depend on how significant the photos/files are as to whether it's worth the time and trouble.??
I've been trying to warn some of my friends about the vagaries of yahoogroups recently, and most of them are either ignoring me or pooh-poohing me.? At some point, they too will find that their lists aren't functional (as I did) or useful because of unresponsiveness in the tech support area, so I guess some folks just have to learn the hard way. Disregard. The solution my moderator was looking for was in the notification.

I see how you can do it one moderator at a time, but not a group wide setting. In Subscription, there is a group of checkboxes. See attached photo. Be sure to save.?
