Re: Freedom of speech

In the Spam Control section Leave the group's Moderated box normally unchecked, and use New Users Moderated instead. That way when people join they start off with the moderation override, and you can choose to leave them that way indefinitely. But for those you choose to unmoderate, set them to Default group policy, rather than Override: not moderated.
One of the things I appreciate about goups.io is the feature to moderate new members but they go off moderation automatically if there have been no problems. On Yahoo it took 5 screens to take someone off moderated status so we often just left them on. But it led to having to moderate more and more messages. In two messages we know if they are spammers or looking for a fight.

I think it also discourages people from even trying to post ¡ª they join to send a press release or solicitation or advertising but unsubscribe when they see the ¡°new users moderated.¡±

Patti,

>>
? ?... But it wouldn't help you in this case because the time zone setting there is only a default for users who are brand new to Groups.io and didn't have that set already at the time they joined your group.

Ok, I found this tab and it was indeed set to Pacific time, not Eastern time, so I changed it. The calendar already was using Eastern time. But, she has reported that this did affect anything on her end.

?As I said, too late for her. The Default Sub Settings are only applied to a subscriber at the moment they join your group.
?
>>Did he/she specify where they are seeing the wrong time zone?

She said this when asked "I was looking on the website. I did my post at 11:48 (not 8:48AM) using the web site interface. I just refreshed the screen and it is still 8:48."

?Ok. Then she is logged in to the site, and she can change her own Timezone setting. And only she can change it:
  • From the drop-menu under her name on the upper right select Account.
  • On the left select the Preferences page.
  • At the top select her preferred Timezone.
  • At the bottom click the blue Update Preferences button.

Where is this control? I looked around but did not find it -

You cannot control the timezone she sees on the group's pages. She has to follow the instructions above for herself.
?
?
but I am getting mixed up between the group settings and my own personal setting
?

?There are three types of settings. Those you access through your Account page? affect apply everywhere on Groups.io. Those you access through your Subscription page apply to you as a subscriber to the particular group you are looking at. Those you (as an owner/mod) access through the Settings page applies to the entire group.

Well, there's that fourth page, Default Sub Settings, which is a template (or default) used to fill in the Subscription page of each new subscriber that joins your group. It doesn't control anything directly, it just gets copied to the new member's Subscription page as his/her subscription (aka membership) is created.

Click on the photo album you want to rename, and click on Edit Album above the pictures. In the Title section rename the album, then click Update at the bottom of the page.

This is exactly what is happening, so if you know - or anyone else -? how to tell her to change it, I would appreciate it!

Open the folder to view the individual photos. Click on the blue Edit Album button at the top. On the resulting page, change the text in the Title box to whatever you want. The click on the Update button at the bottom of the page.

If you're trying to change the name of a File folder, click on Files to display the list of folders. At the right of each folder will be several icons, one of which looks like a pencil on a piece of paper. This is the Edit icon. Click on that, and a dialog box will open where you can change the folder name. Again, be sure to click on Update to save your changes.
?
Hope this helps,
Bruce

I read that this is a user account setting,

?Correct. It controls the dates and times shown to the member when logged into Groups.io's web pages.
?
but what if the user does not have an account because they just read the emails

?It is a technical detail, but if they are subscribed to a group they do have an account. They may not have used it or set a password for it, but in a technical sense it is there, ready for them when they do want to log in.
?
?... ?
and do not want the web functionality? does that mean they have no control over the time zone?

?I think that is both correct and unimportant. That is, I think their account's time zone affects only what they would see on the web. Events have their own time zones, and I think that would control what they receive in notices and reminders by email.

It has been a long while since I've really dug into the calendar though, so I may stand corrected if someone knows for sure.

I am wondering why when a member sends an attachment it comes as a link instead of the picture in the email? Is there a way to do that? Is it a setting I have wrong?

time zone question

Hi! My first large group just transferred to groups.io (yay!) and I got a question today about time zones. I know that there has been a discussion of this, but I am not clear on what exactly is being said, because there is a reference to "default sub settings" which I do not have. On the calendar page, it has the correct time zone. I am seeing the correct time zone on the messages I receive, but one person (so far) sent me an email saying the time zone was wrong.

I read that this is a user account setting, but what if the user does not have an account because they just read the emails and do not want the web functionality? does that mean they have no control over the time zone?

Thanks for any help!

Patti

I think it really depends on the members.? I run two groups, both completely unmoderated and the closest I've every gotten to needing to moderate was a slightly snarky comment about "You two should get a room.".? ;)

Clearly, YMMV.

Re: Freedom of speech

Bill,

I default my groups to MODERATED, period.? As owner, I have the ability to unmoderate anyone in the group on a selective basis.

?If you're going to have an appreciable fraction of the members unmoderated I would suggest a different approach.

That way you retain the ability to control the (normally) unmoderated members all at once by changing the group's Moderated checkbox and not have to go and individually re-moderate people in the event of a disruption in the group.

Re: my own messages

Thank you so much. ?I didn't realize these check boxes were there.

Did another test. ?Still didn't go through.

Then something clicked in this pea brain....yahoo has tucked them into SPAM!

Durn but there were a lot of messages in there! ?Thanks for all the help.

Re: my own messages

?psb b,

Any hints, tips or clues?
?
?Go to your Subscription ?page in that group and click on the Email Delivery History tab. See if the Recent Bounces box includes any of your postings - that would tell you if your email service rejected those messages for some reason.

Some email services have been known to reject messages coming back to you that claim to be from you, on the basis that they were delivered by some other email service. Yahoo Mail though, does not have a history of doing that, that I know of. It is possible that they're taking the lesser step of diverting your messages to your Spam folder, again because messages from you - to you have been commonly associated with spam.

Michael's suggestion will likely not help. That account checkbox controls a work-around that, so far as I know, is only needed for Gmail users (possibly including private or company domains powered by Gmail). But again, not Yahoo Mail.

Re: Approvals of NEW members

Is it possible to automatically approve new members to a group -

1) without any email/action required for membership approval
Yes, but there has to be some email interaction either:
A) Prospective member sends an email to: <groupname>[email protected]
or
B) If they join via the web:
Clicking on ¡°+Join This Group¡± at groups.io/g/<groupname>,
Entering their email address,
And clicking on ¡°Confirm Email Address¡±;
The prospective member will have to reply to a ¡°Confirm Email Address¡± email.

2) but WITH the "first two messages are moderated" still in force.
Yes, go to your group (and if you have the appropriate Owner/Moderator permissions)
Admin: Settings: Spam Control:
Uncheck the box for: "Restricted Membership"
Check the box for: "New Users Moderated"
Unmoderate After: set number of 'appoved posts'
Click on "Update Group¡±

Re: Approvals of NEW members

Hi again,

? I solved my personal issue/question - all (?) I had to do was to scroll further down
the Subscription page - it was there all the time.

? I am not the owner of this group so I don't know whether or not the group can be
set up to automatically approve new members - BUT leave the "first 2 messages
require approval (are moderated)" status.??
? I've left that for the group owner to sort out.

Re: Approvals of NEW members

If the only box checked in the Spam Control area of the Settings page is New User Moderated (and set for 2), then anyone that applies to the group becomes a member immediately, but the first 2 posts will be moderated.? You may not have the permissions needed to see or change it.

Re: Freedom of speech

Put them into moderated mode for two weeks and give them a fair warning that if they ever do it again they will be banned from the group.

I stated earlier send them a link to the terms and conditions of the use of the group and tell them that if they fail to meet these requirements they will no longer be members of the group

I think this is stating the obvious but you need to take a zero tolerance for people who have used the system.
By setting a president on how such abuse is treated it will prevent other misuse going forward

Re: my own messages

I'm not receiving my own messages from my group. I've posted a "good morning" and a "this is a test" and have not received either in my yahoo inbox.

Yes, I've received the responses from other members, and others members unrelated posts.

Yes, I've checked my subscription and all is okay there.

Any hints, tips or clues?
At Groups.io use the drop down menu after your name in the upper right and select:
Account: Preferences: My Posts
Check the box for: "I always want copies of my own messages"
Click on "Update Preferences"

However some Email Providers (on their own) might still not display your own posts.
