If the only box checked in the Spam Control area of the Settings page is New User Moderated (and set for 2), then anyone that applies to the group becomes a member immediately, but the first 2 posts will be moderated.? You may not have the permissions needed to see or change it.

At Groups.io use the drop down menu after your name in the upper right and select:
Account: Preferences: My Posts
Check the box for: "I always want copies of my own messages"
Click on "Update Preferences"

However some Email Providers (on their own) might still not display your own posts.

I have had groups of one sort or another for probably 30+ years.? When I moved a group from a LISTPROC email server (everyone was moderated) to Yahoogroups probably 13 years ago, the other co-owner and I agreed we would TRY to unmoderate the group because of the traffic levels that meant we spent a lot of time moderating.? Our group was "mature" and we THOUGHT that would be sufficient.? I can tell you that within literally HOURS after we made that switch and unmoderated the 1000+ members, the flame wars started in earnest.? It took us probably 2 weeks to go in and MODERATE that group using the Yahoogroup tools available at the time.? In the meantime, we lost probably 1/4 of our members (unsubscribing due to the nasty nature of the postings).? It was a lesson I learned and have never forgotten.

I default my groups to MODERATED, period.? As owner, I have the ability to unmoderate anyone in the group on a selective basis.? I watch and see who is responsible and who follows the rules, as well as who is posting regularly.? THEN, and only then will I consider unmoderating an individual - and as always, I reserve the right to re-moderate them if they change their habits.

"Freedom of Speech" applies to government entities only.? As a private group, you are allowed to establish your own rules of conduct, including what kind of speech you will allow.? No one forces people to join your group, they are free to come and go as they please.? If they don't like the rules, they can leave.

Yes. They will be converted into a table in the Database section.

No. Not unless the group has checked the "Hashtags Required" box in the Message Policies section of the Settings page.

I am almost ready to transfer one of my Yahoo groups to Groups.io.
I have two questions?at this time.

1. Will the links in Yahoo's Links section be transferred to Groups.io?
All of the outside links?have been vetted and are for sites with information related to the purpose?of the group.

2. When making a new topic, is it necessary to add a hashtag?

For the past several days I haven't been receiving notifications of new subscribers requiring my approval.

They aren't hung up in my ISP's spam filters... I see no delivery failures associated with my membership as group owner... I have all available notifications turned on so I should be getting signup notices.

I wouldn't have seen this issue if I hadn't looked at my groups via the web because I usually deal with subscription approvals entirely by email.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

If that's the situation that has you wanting to move messages back to the exec session group, I wouldn't bother moving them. I'd delete them and tell the poster to repost to the proper forum. If they persist, then I'd put them on moderated status in the "wrong" forum and reject inappropriate postings that should have been posted to the exec forum. This will give them incentive to correct their behavior and it avoids you having to forward messages that would then have your info in the headers when you weren't the original author of those messages.

There are times when the urge to help correct others' mistakes should be ignored. I think this may be one of them.

How to I set up my group so all messages contain both "Reply to Group" and "Reply to Sender” options?

In the Message Policies section of your group's Settings page, select Group under Reply To, and do not check either the Remove Other Reply Options box or the Separate Message Footers box.

That will do it for messages that are formatted (HTML), but not for messages that are posted in plain text - the plain text footer does not contain those links (because reasons). If you want to overcome that, in the Message Formatting section you can also check the Force HTML Emails box.

Something seems to have gotten lost in translation - your example footers. I think that's because Groups.io recognizes quoted footers and strips them automatically (because in most cases they would just be unnecessary and confusing clutter at the bottom of a quoted message).

But that's ok. I know what they look like. Here's some more info (though I need to update it for some recent changes, I think):

One factor you may consider is that in Groups.io you can't actually turn off the Messages page, nor restrict it to moderators only. The only two choices are public and private (members-only) access.

I don't know if that should actually concern you. There's no particular harm in letting the unimportant messages accumulate in a members-only page. And there could be a benefit for those members who prefer to read via web than via email.

Or, said differently, "is there any reason to leave yahoo groups for
this kind of group?".

o Getting new members subscribed to a Groups.io group seems to go more smoothly. For email-only members it starts the same way, with an Invite from you or a subscribe email from them. It is just an impression but I read fewer complaints of Invitations not being sent/received, or subscribe commands failing here in Groups.io.

o Groups.io has a Direct Add feature (for Premium groups) that allows you to directly add new subscriber email addresses, bypassing the above.

o Groups.io has a new member moderation feature that automatically removes moderation from a member after you approve a number of their messages (you set the number).

o Groups.io has more subscription options for the email-only members.

o Groups.io allows subscribers to Mute topics or Hashtags that they are not interested in. Or (with some web access to set it up) follow only topics or hashtags that they /are/ interested in.

o Groups.io's calendar feature actually works, if you want to automatically post reminders and notifications about scheduled events.

o Groups.io is actively supported, meaning that message delivery problems to various email services tend to get investigated and resolved.

o While it is true that most of the outages with Y!Groups lately have been with the various web features, there are the occasional bouts of delayed messages and (a week or two ago) some reports of inbound messages going missing.

Given that you don't use Y!Groups' web features you're under no particular time pressure to make a change. Just keep an updated copy of the email addresses in your Manage Members list as a hedge against an unexpected end to Y!Groups.

I ban members after 3 strikes, no acceptions, no asking questionsl if you don’t follow the rules you are out. And in the case of my group my rules are many.

We should allow free speech, shouldn't we??

I would just like to add that for Americans, "freedom of speech" is a legal term with a precise meaning.? In particular, since the article in the US Constitution begins with "Congress shall make no law...", this has been broadly interpreted by the courts as applying only to the government.? It is neither censorship nor a restriction of free speech for individuals and non-governmental entities to restrict speech in their own environment in whatever way they so choose.

I would argue that an on - line chat is nothing like that. A conversation between neighbours is just that, but it does not normally - and perhaps should not, take place in front of numerous (countless?) bystanders. Any recommendations dealing with unfriendly, unneighborly, rude and even hurtful language on a neighborhood group. We are a restricted membership, unmoderated, no Anonymous posts allowed. We just went to a moderated status for 24 hours in an attempt to cool things off. We should allow free speech, shouldn't we?

I have such a list and we do have problems. The list is described a conversation between neighbors — like a chat on the front porch or the back fence. No press releases except from the government. No business postings except in direct request from a member or for a new business in the neighborhood. No solicitations except for rare instances of fires or other emergencies to a household in the neighborhood. People posting information about where to donate things for temporary disasters like school supplies for the immigrant children in (unlawful) detention, hurricane relief, etc are fine.

I ask people not to characterize the comments or person but to factually discuss their comments. “Harry, you have no sense at all and your statements are racist on top of it.” Privately I would remind the person that this message is neither helpful or informative. Explain why you believe the statements are racist and avoid discussing Harry’s intelligence. The people usually apologize to me and to the list.

If the message is horrible enough, I put the person on moderated status immediately which means I read their messages before they are posted. Repeated offenses definitely mean moderated. Sometimes people argue or ask why a message was returned. One person who does that is a gallery owner who _sometimes_ shows local artists but wants to post announcements of all her exhibitions to the list. She has been on moderated status for over 10 years.

Only one person in 15 years has been banned from the list.

1. He was a person who ran for office every time a position was open with no possibility of getting more than 1 vote if he got on the ballot,
2. repeated attacked people for attacking him when they objected to having several _hundred_ signs posted in our neighborhood,
3. arguing with me about every message I rejected as much as 6 emails back and forth, and finally
4. posting messages on other neighborhood lists that would never be allowed on ours that members of both lists respond to and copied our list. His message would thus be copied to our list. (Members either eventually stopped or he did.)

We once had two men that we think started drinking after dinner and by 10:00 would start posting messages attacking other people on the list. During the day they posted intelligent and helpful messages. I have 2 co-moderators — we take 4 months at a time but I step in when there is trouble. One of my less inhibited moderators who emails people and says Cut it out! sent them both an email telling them to stop posting after dark “for reasons you well know.”

The list keeps growing — almost 3,000 members and ~900 messages a month. Sometimes people complain because we often get requests for plumbers and chimney sweeps every week, but that is usually why people join the list. They move to the neighborhood and need help. Sending them to a list isn’t a friendly way of responding, although we have one. First they ask for a plumber and then they stay for the conversation.

As a former college professor I insist that we can discuss hard issues like racism and development sensibly and productively. If necessary I put the whole list on moderated status. The worst was about a development that covered what some people considered a public park and believed they had been promised it would be a park forever—not about racism.

I took over the list which began when 12 neighbors were afraid in neighborhood crime spree. Now it is the place to go when you want to know about anything happening in the neighborhood. I even got a response when I asked why snow had an acoustical effect when the trains that border our neighborhood went by.

So I consider it invaluable and it works. Private “educational” reminders to members, temporary moderation, permanent moderation, no commercial messages, government announcements are okay.

A long message, sorry. I must say that moving to Groups.io has made the list much easier to manage.
