Re: Moderator e-mail address -- better to use groups.io address than personal address?

Thanks, Frances.

My responses to each applicant are personalized¡ªwon't work with a generic auto-send Welcome message.

An auto-send Welcome message already goes out to explain group rules and guidelines.?

I read those discussions. Wanted to make sure I was getting the latest info.

Thanks, Donald. Good luck with your experiment. At this point, I can't risk it! ;-)

Re: Can a remember remove his own posts?? Not finding the answer....

Janie,

?

You have to remember that once a post is sent out into the Cyber World, you can not retrieve and delete it. Searches of your group will not find it, but it is in the e-mail accounts of all who received it.

?

Just a thought,

Subject: [GMF] Can a remember remove his own posts?? Not finding the answer....

?

We have a member who keeps bugging the mods to remove this post, remove that post, because they were showing up on google search. (Group privacy settings have since been updated to stop that)?

Can't a member remove his own posts?

?

Re: Can a remember remove his own posts?? Not finding the answer....

It's not always allowed.? For instance, I cannot delete my messages in group mgrs (this group).
It's dependent on the way the group is set up.
I also cannot Edit my own messages here, in this group, once I've posted and have it approved by a moderator..

There is no import function.? All you can do is go through the files you received to verify that you use the same settings on the new group.? It might be easier to just open both groups in separate tabs, but with all the options available, it might still be difficult to not accidentally skip over something.

To actually answer the question...

Yes; it's an option in the More (hamburger) menu under each message.

Only if you allow it in Admin, ?Settings.
Having had a quick double check I don't think that is true. The ability of a member to delete a message exists even if editing is disallowed as a group setting.

Same here - about 50 over the last two months.? And I also got one that responded to the questionnaire and said they lived in Dallas, although the IP address was in India.? I replied if the India address was temporary and asked what their interest was in our group.? No reply so far.

Disable Editing Messages

?

Select this checkbox if you do not want to allow members to make changes to the content of their own messages in the message archive (that is, after the messages have been posted to the group).

Note:?Owners and moderators can still edit messages that are pending approval. Moderators can also edit messages in the archive if they have the appropriate permissions.

I don't know, but at the very least, keep tabs and info somewhere so if it
does get to that point again we can have the info ready?quickly.
I agree. I have a new pending member with a strange aol account, apparently from Holland.
My group is restricted and prospective members must introduce themselves to be approved, so I am not particularly worried, but I'll keep all info in case of a new invasion of fake accounts.

Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page

Bruce,

For group owners, there already exists a page to do bulk actions at
the topic level. It was never added to the menu system because it's
just a little too powerful.
As I recall, there were two things that held this back.

First was that it enabled bulk deletion of topics, which (for reasons) incurs (or incurred) a very large load on the servers. Mostly the need to clean up everything that points to those messages. Mark had some ideas to improve this, but I don't know if that ever happened.

Second was that there is no "Undo". That's the "too powerful" part - make a mistake and you're stuck with it. Even support can't restore the deleted topics. Again, a substantial development effort would be required to support this.

This strikes me as a parallel to that, but now you're opening it up to
subscribers...who know even less about the system than owners do.
Presumably subscribers wouldn't have the Delete option, or any other option not normally available to subscribers. I don't *think* bulk update of Mute/Follow status would overload the servers, but I could be wrong about that.

Concerns about implementation effort, or resource usage, can only really be evaluated by Mark. So I wouldn't let these concerns deter someone from suggesting it on beta.

It may depend on your email provider. I am able to spoof the group
owner's address using an email program that lets me change the
apparent from address. I use it judiciously as I was able to (in a
test) to appear to post a generic message from one of my moderator's
email addresses in Yahoo. I haven't tested it in GIO. But to a private
email address it appears to come from the group owner address. I don't
know what happens if they try to reply though.

I think I sent invitations out to a few hundred at a time and got the
"pending review" notice. It cleared in an hour or two and I did
another few hundred. I did the same until all members were invited.

You probably can do the entire 1600 at once. I didn't try doing them
all at once.

Linda -- If this becomes a persistent problem in your group, the standard response is to make the group Restricted, at least for awhile. That way any new applicants can be vetted before they are let in (and potentially become a problem).

If your group provides any information in files or photos or wherever that could be misused, this is a wise move anyway. Last time this happened, back in late January, it generated a lot of GMF traffic (/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/70052673), along with new restrictions on when the group's member list can be made available to subscribers.

Bruce
