Basics of managing the message list/archive.... How to delete one message ... and managing the membership list?
Apologies if this is something that's been asked earlier or I missed finding it in an appropriate FAQ.
In my currently only active group.io there is a post in a thread which with hindsight I never should have allowed to be posted (but the member was unmoderated.)? I'd like to delete or at least edit it. I do see, when I'm viewing that message, a dropdown that includes "delete" but it appears to me that it's to?delete the whole thread, not that one message. What's the story? Is there a way to delete one post? Another very basic function is managing the members' list. For example, I want to delete one misbehaving member... I am not seeing in the interface when I'm in the group where to access member management. ? And that brings up a related question: If I remove a group member do they get any notice of the event? My excuse for having such basic questions is that this group has been since migrated to groups.io a very very low activity, so I've spent almost no time managing it or living in the group.io group owner interface. Thanks for any help. Alex. -- {This message was sent with 100% recycled electrons} |

How to use my PG downloaded archives and docs in migrating a group from yahoogroups to groups.io?
#migration
Hi all.
The bad news is that I missed the window for doing a fully automated migration to groups.io . The good news is that just before yahoo removed the files and twenty years of archived messages I successfully downloaded them into PG offline. And I also managed to download all the members' email addresses. (I also, just for a "plan-B" did initiate Yahoo's own download of the group content... Though I haven't yet been notified my downloaded zip is available.) So I'm virtually certainly going to recreate the group at group.io. But currently am?clueless as to how I would import the group's saved message archive and/or files into the newly created group.io. Can anyone give me the short* version of the "how you do this" and/or point me to a resource/link that gives the detail? At minimum...... Could someone tell me if what I hope to do (set up the?new group at groups.io and import the message archive and possibly files) ..... either from the PG downloader or the zip file that hopefully will materialize from yahoo someday ...is possible? Is practical? Alex * Long version would also be appreciated. ;-) -- {This message was sent with 100% recycled electrons} |
Re: paid, transferred the group, crickets
I've reviewed all 4 of your posts and all the suggestions you were given.
In each case you say you're having trouble but offer absolutely? no detail information that would help others in diagnosis. Your first post in each topic is your last. No one knows if they helped you or not.? Instead of feedback they just get another ephemeral complaint with no detail. Have they helped you or not? Have you answered any of their questions? No. It's like throwing ideas down a black hole. If you're not providing feedback and responding to others' request for more information they/we can't help you and eventually, no one will be willing to even try. -- Bob Bellizzi |

I am amused that the first real topic on GMF was about getting people to join your group. Looks like marketing is a perennial problem.

OK, finally our Posting Guidelines text updated when selected from the Left-sidebar but I don't understand why it was so delayed in doing so. Cleared the History and the cache, Bruce, and did a hard refresh [command + R] on my MacBookPro (OS 10.11) Using Safari vers. 11.1.2 and there's no change in the text of the Guidelines as previously described. (Tried [CTRL + F5], too, but nothing.)
Not sure how to resolve this or whether there is some doable workaround. Still open to other ideas. Paul M. == |

Re: paid, transferred the group, crickets
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI moved our neighborhood Yahoogroup of more than 900 members to groups.io, and paid for a subscription so I could direct add the members. I¡¯ve found the transition so far pretty painless. ? For the members¡¯ emails, I downloaded from Yahoogroups the list of members as a csv, which I then saved as an Excel spreadsheet. I just copied and pasted the email addresses from the spreadsheet into groups.io with no problem. I did them in batches of 200 or so, and after the first 400 there was a delay but the adds were accepted pretty quickly (apparently approved by the groups.io moderators) and I had no problem with the rest. ? I also downloaded the database of member info from Yahoogroups as a csv, saved as an Excel spreadsheet, then created a database structure on groups.io with the same number of columns and same column titles as we had used in Yahoogroups, and had no problem importing into groups.io from the spreadsheet. ? For the 80+ Word docx files, I had saved them from Yahoogroups onto my hard drive, and those I uploaded to a folder in the groups.io Files section manually, one at a time. ? I also created a subgroup for our board of directors, and followed the same procedure as above (in Yahoogroups we had had a separate group for the board). ? The last challenge, which I haven¡¯t tackled yet, is the message archives. I have downloaded them from Yahoogroups, but not yet tried to get them onto groups.io. ? Hope this helps, Best, Terry Tegnazian |

That address will then show up in the Banned list. I don't get the "reject" thing here. If you're going to reject someone, don't invite them. That said, there is a Past members display for Premium groups. Perhaps you would like a way to manually enter email addresses into that (as you can for banned)? "Moderate" might have limited utility, if you've predetermined that you want this invitee to continue to be moderated beyond the New Users Moderated value already set up for Spam Control. But a moderated member is still a member. It's not really a different category, just a flag set in their member record. Note that it is possible to allow non-members to post to your group (Admin>Settings>Message Policies). Such messages are always moderated. I get it that you want some way to manage email addresses that aren't currently subscribed to the group. I'm just not sure it should be integrated with the invitation system. Hopefully the above will help you accomplish some of your objectives. Regards, Bruce |
Recommend feature: invitation type
#featurerequest
When moving members from Yahoo Groups, we had banned a guy from the group that was well known for bad behaviour.? His aliases were also known. Though we have a restricted group, it would be nice to be able to categorize known bad players using their email address.
For clarity, an invitation is only extended to a non-member by specification of an email address and a comment field (display name). I recommend an extension to the current invitation capability to include a new parameter that defines the "type" of invitation. The default would be "type"='new member'. Other options would include type='reject', type='moderated', and type='ban'.? As in night clubs, if a non-member attempts to enter a club they are extended an invitation to enter (default), or extended an invitation to leave (rejected but where the user can make their case for entry), or banned (rejected with prejustice which is permanent), or possibly enter but we're keeping our &#*! eye on you (moderated). Also an invited non-member name could be generalized using a regular expressions (regex, the best option) or a string that contains wild cards (globs).? This would allow you to accept/reject based on a domain name, or other system generated keys like? ?so_and_so+invite_67@... groups.io already has the ability to moderate an existing member, but that would not apply to non-members so that should not generate a conflict. If these features are implemented, the name could be changed from invitations to non-member invitations or maybe just non-member administration to reduce user confusion? Comments? --Cue [Message text sanitized slightly by Moderator] |
