Re: Honey, I shrunk the photos

Chris,

Yes, but unknown IF the reduced image size would degrade the quality worse than using a 3rd party software.

This way, using the 3rd party software, adjustments and tweaks can be done to nail it right each time.? Then uploading to GIO, the same or close to the same sizing can be used. :)

I looked at your Groups.io homepage and you seem to have pasted a section on top of the description box. Or something!

I cannot guess what is happening to you. Can you post a screenshot of your Settings page, showing the Description box as per this example:

This example has about 14 lines in the Description; some of them contain hidden text for use as keywords for anyone carrying out a search.

Okay, first are you logged in as owner? Or moderator with the right permissions (I think this works. A moderator needs to be able to modify group settings to do this.)
What does it say in the top left corner? Owner??

Go to Admin, Settings.
There is a box labelled Description.
Type there. If you open the Advanced Toolbar hidden beneath the regular toolbar) you get more styles, fonts, etc.
You need to save at the bottom of the page.
If you can't do this, and you are the owner, logged in with the correct email address, some of your settings are wrong. Or your browser, perhaps?

You can put in hyperlinks, bold or italicize, align centre or whatever, use special characters, text colour and more.

Chris,

I? experimented with this, with attachments.? It does decrease the size of the picture, in the sense that one views it as a postcard, say.? The other methods keep the picture full size. Could be I? was doing something wrong, too.

More-I was able to upload 156 albums, using 66 Mb of space.?

It's no coincidence that Mark was also the architect of ONElist in 1998. This then became eGroups and was subsequently sold to Yahoo, where it turned into Yahoo Groups.

Yahoo then kept making "improvements" until everything finally collapsed. And here we all are.

Mark tells the full story of how he founded Groups.io:

Hats off to Mark on his system architecture. Transferring all those Y! Groups is an accomplishment, but as a retired system architect, I am more impressed by the performance of groups.io in the face of a rapid increase in traffic. Scaling up may sometimes be easy in theory, but doing it in practice as well Mark has, is really incredible. There are so many things that can go wrong unexpectedly. Sometimes it is as mundane as an employee or contractor who doesn't perform as expected under the new level of stress or a minor piece of hardware that you forgot to include in your failover strategy.? Or a failover step that worked fine with 1M users, but flubs on 4M. An outage or slowdown or two under the new load is still likely, but performance so far is amazing to me.

No. The resize only occurs upon upload/transfer.

Also, is there a way to download the size and/or resolution of each photo in the group?
The size of each photo, in kB, is shown when the image is displayed in the slide show presentation. But the best way to check for oversize images is probably to export all them and examine them offline. See the Export Group Data button at the top of your Settings page.

GMF Wiki - support for group members and managers

If you are relatively new to Groups.io, you will find a wealth of information on the Group Managers Forum wiki.
It has been built over the past few years by interested group members. (Most is editable by any member of GMF.)
?
For a start, there is a page that gives you an overview on starting a group with links to other parts of the wiki - Quick Start for Group Formation.?
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation

The table of contents of the wiki has a?Quick Start guide for members - joining, reading, replying and replying privately or off-group.

The main section on information for members covers some of the key or FAQ's you and your members probably have, like details about logging in, about being removed for spam, subscription options and more.

The next main section for group managers has about inviting, direct adding and screening new members, subgroups, moderating messages, status badges, dealing with bouncing, promoting a member to owner or moderator, and much more.

The last section is in its infancy. Some members have said that they needed translations of the interface, etc. and this section of the wiki is designed to help groups share this. Hasn't happened yet, but it is a busy time of the year.

Don't know where things are? Use the search box at top of the wiki page.

As I said, most of it is open to interested GMF members to improve, add, edit. Your contributions can be reverted if you are out to lunch! So don't worry.

And most importantly, the wiki is open to anyone to read, member of Groups.io or not.

Re: LInk Forum Membership with Organization Membership #membership #api #website #subscription

Gary,

?
Our non-profit organization needs three forums, which I'm hoping can be hosted on :
  1. A public forum which anyone can join and participate in. (That's easy)
  2. A private forum for members only (we need a way to add/remove members based on their membership with our organization)
  3. Another private forum for board members only (again, we'd like the administrator/owner to be able to automatically manage membership in this forum)
As Frances suggested, it may be useful to make 2 & 3 subgroups of 1. Or perhaps 3 a subgroup of 2, with 1 a separate group. See the links she gave you for more detail on how subgroups work. The biggest distinction between a subgroup and any other type of group is that all subgroup members must also be members of the associated primary group (think of the subgroup as a subset of the primary group's membership).
?
Reviewing the Alpha API, I can't find any hooks that would allow me to automatically add and delete members or set their passwords (a requirement for 2. and 3.) Can anyone help me?
?
I'm not familiar with the API, but I'll echo Chris' comment about passwords: those are account-level (tied to users email address) and not manageable by a group owner. Fortunately, logging in to Groups.io is very easy if any of your group members need to do so.
?
There is a function known as Direct Add which is available to Premium groups (which your group must be to use the API). See the (itself a subgroup of beta) for help with API calls. See also in beta (which probably should have been in the API group).

You're not alone.

Isn't there a straightforward way to get the messages from a Privacy Dashboard download (into mbox format) uploaded into the messages for a new groups.io group?
No.

I will try my best to explain, if you will try your best to follow along.

It's my understanding that the PG-to-GIO software for Windows will somehow repost the messages from its own SQL database. This software remains in beta. You need to pay $25 to Wilson for the initial SQL download using PG Offline (separate Windows software) -- and do that before Dec 14 -- plus an additional fee of some kind for the PG-to-GIO upload software, when it becomes available. Rumor has it that the latter will cost more than $25, so you'll be spending a minimum of $50 if you want to go this route.

One advantage to this option is that at least some of the group attachments are downloaded to PG Offline, and the upload software might reattach them at the time of re-posting. Donald or Lawrence or Wilson will have to clarify.

Meanwhile, Lena has created a Perl script that will do something similar to upload an mbox file. Full details are here (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/22251). This costs nothing, and in conjunction with your Privacy Dashboard download, seems to accomplish the same objectives as the Personal Groupware suite. The process, however, is substantially more complicated, as you'll see when you read the linked message above.

It's my understanding that neither of these approaches will properly assign "ownership" of each message to its original poster, nor will the posting dates be correct. So...for example...the posting table/calendar on your home page will not reflect the original posting dates, nor will you be able to use the functions of the GIO search engine to filter these old posts by date or subscriber.

If you want that capability, you had to either do the Easy Group Transfer (too late now), or have Mark eventually upload your existing mbox file(s) for you. Mark's previous posts suggest that he would again expect a payment for Premium Yearly ($220) if you want him to do this. If anyone has gotten this done for them recently, they haven't bothered to come back here to GMF and say so.

Of course, you can always just upload your Yahoo message archive to your GIO group as a file, and many people have opted for that. If you want to convert it to human-readable form without all the html and header information, you can open it in and convert it to a flat text file using the . A few other email clients probably also have this capability.

See also Shal's recent post?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/25761.

(How was this done in Easy Transfer?)
For the Easy Group Transfer, Mark did?not do a Privacy Dashboard download of the group. The messages were captured in some other way, probably related to his Chrome browser add-on (). I have personally used this add-on to capture messages, and it does work, when Yahoo itself isn't acting up. The Privacy Dashboard download is more straightforward.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Oo er... Why do you need to be able to set passwords? Passwords are an "Account Level" feature and do not exist per group. IMHO that is a requirement too far.

I cannot see why members having control of their own passwords without anyone else knowing what they are would compromise any of your other requirements. You would have control over who is and who is not a member of either / both of the private forums so having control of the passwords does not, as far as I can see, add? anything.

Re: "Can post" and what does it mean? plus other stuff

I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but since we're on this topic, I am having issues with Gmail moving whitelisted senders automatically to my "spam" folder - not every message from every sender, but too many for comfort. Many are from commercial companies to whose lists I have subscribed but some are personal correspondence. Does anyone have any idea why Gmail would be doing?this? It started only recently, within the last couple of months, but it is getting quite irritating.
?
And no, I never delete directly from "spam"; I move it to the inbox and do it there.
One thing that can help is adding them to your contacts B&P
