Re: Growing a group #promotion

Re including keywords within the group description:
if the description is long only a portion containing the ¡°searched¡± keywords will display.
If the search is for a keyword that is unique the search will likely jump right to your group so it likely doesn¡¯t matter.?

But if the searcher enters a more general terms such as ¡°horse¡±, they may go through a few pages of results. If that general term/keyword is in the first line or two of your group description or in the group name they¡¯ll find your group more easily. ?

Also a search seems to bring up a list of groups by name (can¡¯t choose other options) in reverse alphabetical order.?

Re: How to collect donations from members to support cost of forum

Hi

I can't test this, because I don't have a premium account but look in Admin, Activity, Payment Activity.
Groups.io uses Stripe to collect donations. (A moderator says that is also the system that Groups.io uses to collect Premium upgrade costs so you will have seen the interface users will see.)
There are several recent messages if you search in this group for stripe.

Re: Importing/Uploading Messages to a Groups.IO Group

Thunderbird works just fine. You have to rename the files sent by yahoo to add the .mbox extension and have at least one email client in Thunderbird to do it.

In Thunderbird, add the Import/Export Add-on.

Under "Local Folders" Right Click on Local Folders, the "New Folder" and add a new folder.

Right Click on the New FOlder you just made and Use the Import Add-on (Top of right-click menu).

Choose "Import mbox File"

Leave the first radio button on in the pop-up box and Click OK.

Choose you file and voila!

How to collect donations from members to support cost of forum

I am moving a Yahoo group to groups.io which charges $220/year. The forum members have expressed willingness to support the move financially. I see a donation button which I tried activating but got lost in forming an LLC - which I do not want to do.? I just want a simple donation collection box. Is there a simple way to do that?

Is nothing really happening, or is your browser just rendering the photo again in full-screen?

When you click the Download button, the file is supposed to be sent to your computer as a binary stream. What happens with that stream depends on your browser settings/add-ons. Most browsers will simply render the photo again...to actually download it, you may have to right-click on it.*

...or a different photo appears to be downloaded.
There is a known bug in the sorting algorithm for the Emailed Photos folder. If you sort by anything other than Posted date, the thumbnails will be sorted correctly but the underlying links are not.?

Also, if you are deleting photos, be sure to refresh the thumbnail page between deletions. Things can get out of sync if your browser is caching the thumbnails.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

*There was a time when groups.io forced an actual download...but doing so caused other problems, and the change was subsequently reverted.

About the missing messages - it seems that others had that problem and they finally appeared. Anyone with experience, please chime in.

About bouncing - in Admin, Members.
See this wiki page about status - two different coloured "B's".

Photo Download Bug

I seem to be experiencing a bug.

When I search Photos and find the photo that I want, then press the DOWNLOAD button at the bottom of the photo, either nothing happens, or a different photo appears to be downloaded.

I do not have this issue when not using the search option.

Yahoogroups main member list includes bouncers

Hello

While copying membership lists from Yahoogroups manually, it occurred to me that the main list of members INCLUDES members who are bouncing.

There is no option to display only members who are not bouncing.

So I wrote a quick little AutoIt script that compares the main list of members to the list of bouncing members, so that I can sort the main list of members by whether they are bouncing.

What's your strategy/method for getting this information?

Samuel

There's a topic on beta about this, though I haven't found an announcement of when it was implemented, ? I'd suggest contacting support, but they may be a bit slow to respond right now.? As a work around, you could create more groups using another email address, but I understand how that could get confusing.

Steven -- This has been reported before (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19217).?I can only assume that after some period of time, he was able to resume creating new groups...otherwise we'd probably still be hearing about it.

Please let us know what you find out so we can close the loop this time.

I'm fairly new here and can't contribute much but I do appreciate the GMF resource and the time - and extensive knowledge - you mods are putting in to it. Thank you. I have learnt a lot .. it has given me a few laughs as well :-)
Groupsio is wonderful ..

Indeed it is a balancing act. Just make sure that your appointee(s) as co - owner(s) is/are totally trustworthy and will not abuse the capabilities that you have placed in their hands.

Re: Group owner email

Fabien,

i am using the email address that is associated with my account, which
could be the problem.
You wouldn't have guessed it, but because you're using Gmail that is indeed the problem.

Short answer: use some other address to send your test message.

Longer answer:

What you're experiencing is one of my primary complaints with Gmail: it hides from you your own messages that return from somewhere else. It sees that you already have that message in your account, and decides you don't need to see a copy in your Inbox.

For group postings Groups.io implements a work-around. For Gmail users it modifies the Message-ID field in the message header sent back to yourself. That causes Gmail not to recognize it as the same message and so the message displays in your Inbox.

Arguably Groups.io should do that for +owner messages as well, but it doesn't.

Emails to +owner are a "logged" activity, so I suggest you go to your groups's web UI, then Admin > Activity and see what (if anything) is recorded there.

Re: Add Moderators #addmembers #owner

.. but remember, if nobody but you has "set moderator privileges," the group is then totally dependent on you, and sooo many Yahoo groups have suffered from having no contactable owner

A lot of that e-mail bounced as undeliverable. I don't recall any data in our Yahoo group flagging members' email addresses as undeliverable.
My experience with this has been similar to what has been said elsewhere in this thread: many e-mail addresses that Yahoogroups did not flag as undeliverable turned out to be undeliverable. In my case, I had a small enough list of members that I was able to use my own ISP to send them all an e-mail beforehand, and many of the onces that Yahoogroups did not flag as undeliverable, bounced (many some bounced hard).
