Groups with more messages than this have been transferred successfully. In the unlikely event that it doesn't work this time, you'll have Yahoo to thank for it. And having paid for Premium Yearly, you can always try again if the first attempt leaves some content behind, or otherwise doesn't meet with your satisfaction.

Good luck,

Tom -- As you note, message numbers are assigned in sequence, just as they were in Y!G. This is true whether posted by email, on the web page, or brought over via transfer.

Please also note that messages may have been deleted from the Y!G message base before it was ever transferred. This sometimes causes consternation when the transfer agent reports a number of messages transferred that is less than the message # of the last message that was posted to the group.

I hope you were able to follow that.?

2. What happens to hyperlinks to a message? from within another message? from within a file? Are they transformed to the new path and message number?
Nada. The link is unchanged, pointing to the old Y!G message number. Aargh - that's going to take some tracking down.
Expecting the transfer agent to parse every message for every conceivable cross-reference strikes me as unrealistic.

3. Has anybody come up with a way to map g.io message numbers to the original Y!G #s?
If anyone has done such a thing, it has not been reported since I've been here (approx 2 years).

4. Searching for such links is a problem. g.io seems to ignore the forward slash "/" in the search term. Is there an escape or control character to force it to be a literal? Does it even search within the hyperlink tag? Are there any search tips?
The search engine is capable of handling string literals, so try "/thisstring" instead. No guarantees that this won't escape the t.

Hey Adam (and anybody else stuck with this problem),

It's possible that the email address that Y!G has for the list owner is actually a dead or abandoned address.? If you have that email address, try sending an email to the same name at gmail.com.? Example:? if the owner's email was tjohnson5@...,?try sending email to tjohnson5@...? If you know her name was Thea Johnson, try thea.johnson@....? This is just grasping at straws here, but nothing else has worked for you has it?

If you know the person's name, or feel like doing some more sleuthing, try to do an internet search for their name and the clubs/interests you know about them.? You may be able to find their current email address.

If you *do* find them, they'll still need to deal with Yahoo, or hopefully they'll remember their Y!G password.

Good luck!

transfer problem

After getting the message that groups.io has accepted the invitation to the yahoo group and setting it as moderator I try to start the transfer. Clicking on the ¡°go ahead to transfer¡± button, nothing happens. It just returns to the same page. I confirmed that [email protected] is a moderator. I¡¯ve been trying for the last 24 hours. Is there some built in delay that¡¯s being run into?

Adding a gigunda group

I am in the process of transferring my groups from Yahoo over. I am gobsmacked as the British say at the clarity, ease, and elegance of what you have built. ?Everything I have done so far seems to be working perfectly.

I am good with?
Setting up a group
Transferring members as needed

I will next learn The process of transferring the messages and I think that will be pretty straight forward for the newer and/or smaller groups.

However, I do have a couple of groups with a very large number of messages and want to just verify that the process will work for them. The largest has 122,000 messages.?

Thoughts?

There isn't. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19699

I received this: "You have reached the limit for number of invites that can be sent out without approval. Once your new invites have been approved, they will be sent out. You will receive a notification when this happens."
Just wait. All of your invitations will be approved and go out soon.?

Continue waiting.? You can check the status box at the top of your transfer page to verify that the invitation has been received by GIO.? Once it has, it's a matter of waiting.? Right now that can be an extended time because of the sudden demand.

24+ hours and no acceptance of Yahoo Group invitation to [email protected] from groups.io transfer agent

Adrian Segar

I wish to move an existing group from Yahoo to groups.io. I have set up the new group on groups.io and paid for a premium plan. I sent the invite from my Yahoo group for [email protected] to join the Yahoo group over 24 hours ago, but groups.io has not accepted the invitation. (In other words, I've not seen [email protected] join as a member of the Yahoo group.) According to the documentation, that invite should have gone out in a few hours. So I am stuck waiting. Please advise on what to do.

Thanks!

Message (re-)numbering #messages #transfer

I want to clear up my initial misunderstanding of the transfer.

1. Are Yahoo message numbers preserved?
At first, I thought they were; now I think not - they are just a serial number assigned by g.io. #8391 on Y!G became #8197 in g.io

2. What happens to hyperlinks to a message? from within another message? from within a file? Are they transformed to the new path and message number?
Nada. The link is unchanged, pointing to the old Y!G message number. Aargh - that's going to take some tracking down.
?
3. Has anybody come up with a way to map g.io message numbers to the original Y!G #s?
Maybe something could be derived from a PB Offline download provided the g.io transfer was to an empty message archive and there had been no deletions on Y!G relative to the PBO download. Thinking that it could be as simple as a SQLite query on the PBO database.
?
4. Searching for such links is a problem. g.io seems to ignore the forward slash "/" in the search term. Is there an escape or control character to force it to be a literal? Does it even search within the hyperlink tag? Are there any search tips?

TIA,

Tom

That depends on where you are in the process.?

Go to the transfer page at?/yahootransfer, select the group from the Existing Transfers menu, then click on the big red "Delete Transfer Request" button on the resulting page.

If this button is not present (i.e.: you've already given the go-ahead), you're too late.

Re: Yahoo Transfers: can we exclude all members from being rolled over and let that happen manually?

Thanks for your advice, Chris. ?Our member numbers stay relatively constant, but a decent proportion of members are added and dropped every year. So a lot of past posts are from former members who will not get transferred. I assume like Duane said that just gets posted with their id/email. I just didn¡¯t want them all looking like I wrote all those messages as a group owner.?

Sorry to add to any confusion. You guys are handling these questions so well, trying to learn as I go.

What is the difference between a display name and a username? Why have both?

Hi Jerry,

My understanding is @user_name is a shorthand reference to a user within Groups.io.? A clever user might set it and from there on out, add it to their signature.? This informs others how to tag them on a message.

Correction to my post:? it seems @user_name is currently a placeholder for future functionality.? ;)

I claimed pablos as pablo was already taken.? If only my parents had the foresight to name me x233? (or some such unique name)

Not that I'm aware of.

I had to do a second transfer from Yahoo to get photos transferred, and the first try left dummy albums with zero photos.? Since there are over 550 of them I do not want to do it manually...I have a life!
Not anymore, it would seem. :-)
