I believe that's entirely possible.? When doing the paid transfers, do one for each group, but use the same destination subgroup.? To minimize the possibility of problems, I'd only transfer one at a time.? If you're doing it manually, it becomes more tedious and you can't actually import the messages without6 resending each one.

I am currently in the waiting line for my first group migration. (Sent out the [email protected]?invitation yesterday, nothing back yet. It¡¯s mega busy probably!) Once this groups has been successfully transferred I¡¯ll try the next one with the same destination and see what happens. :)
?
Just to be sure: a group migration does not destroy any existing info in the target (sub)group? There¡¯s a couple of topics already in this particular subgroup here.

Thanks,

If not, I could migrate them separately into their own subgroups.
I believe it is possible, but I don't know of anyone who has done it.?

If you try it, and it doesn't work, no harm done...you can always fall back on Option 2. Please report back on what you find.

But is it then possible to merge two subgroups? I know that I can export data per subgroup, but I don't think I can put that back (including messages etc) into another subgroup.
There are no tools available that would allow you to merge the subgroups afterward; nor can you merge subgroup content into the primary group.?

Bruce

I believe folks have set the main group as Announcement Group and used the subgroups for discussions.? In this mode, only Moderators can post though.? If you'd like others to be able to post, you'd need to make them moderators, or not set it this way.? Maybe set the main group to Moderate all messages to prevent discussion from accidentally getting started.

It hasn't been mentioned lately, but each group and subgroup has it's own settings, so they each need to be set as you'd like on their respective Settings page.

Migrate several Yahoo groups into one subgroup possible?

Hi,

I am going to migrate a couple of Yahoo groups. I know I can migrate them into their own subgroups. But some of them overlap, both in subject and in members, and it would make sense to merge them into a single subgroup. Is that possible?

If not, I could migrate them separately into their own subgroups. But is it then possible to merge two subgroups? I know that I can export data per subgroup, but I don't think I can put that back (including messages etc) into another subgroup.

Thanks,
Ben

Re: Help with transfer of an "orphaned" Yahoo group #pgoffline

I understand if you are not with the tools to do anything and more than likely most members are on no mail but maybe post to those groups that you would like for them to join you over at xyz group that you created on IO groups ? Groups that have been stagnate for along time seems Yahoo could just delete the group . I came across one a couple years ago there was no posts for over 3 years .The owner had died the moderator left so it sets .

I have created the member [email protected], but cannot elevate it to moderator and am thus unable to start the transfer process.

Re: Can I transfer multiple yahoo groups to subgroups of a main group? #transfer

The one catch is that all members of a Groups.io subgroup must also be a member of the associated primary group. So as you do the transfers into subgroups, any addresses not already in the primary group will be automatically added to both the subgroup and primary group.
Reading this:

So If you start out with the subgroups, not the primary, the primary will be populated automagically.

Then could the primary be moderated for announcements pertinent to all subgroups?

Hi Sharon,

When I did my migration from Y!G last week, I put all 1,000+ email addresses in a file and uploaded the addresses.? See the bottom of the invite screen.

It took about an hour for the request to be approved.? At which point, when I clicked on?Sent Invitations, I was able to see they had all gone out (and which bounced).? My workflow was the following:

  1. Initial bulk invite to Y!G in conjunction with a?Y!G?Special Notice so people wouldn't freak out.? ;)
  2. As people signed up, I received a boatload of notifications (as configured).
  3. Two days later, I went back to the?Sent Invitations screen and culled all those that?Accepted (I wanted to keep track) and I resent the invitations.? Once again, in conjunction with a Y!G?Special Notice
The last four days I've been doing the last step once a day.? Tonight (local time) I'm going to?soft close my Y!G (flip it to moderate all messages).? I'll leave it be for a week and delete it.? During this final week, if there are any posts to Y!G, I'lll reply to them to join the new group.?

My migration was relatively easy because I had no content to preserve.? I just needed to migrate 1,000+ subscribers.? As of this writing, 650+ came over.? No time like now to clean house!? :)

Sharon -- This is completely wrong.

You can invite as many as you want, but if you invite more than 20 in one day, they will be reviewed before going out, to ensure you are not a spammer. This was implemented two years ago when someone created a group and invited 600,000 subscribers.

Kent -- Yes. In the past, it has sometimes taken much longer than "a day or two" to move forward from here...but under the circumstances I believe Mark is fully committed to processing Yahoo transfers, and is putting most of his other responsibilities on the back burner.

As long as the status box says what it should say in "Step #11" ("we have received your invitation and will accept it soon..."), you should be good to go. Consider double-checking that.

As stated, this wait is the longest step of the process. I don't think it is intrinsically the longest step, although it does involve human intervention (solving Yahoo's ). But at this point you have clearly made a commitment to the transfer process, and for reasons of his own Mark has decided is the best place for him to allow groups to stack up in the transfer queue until he can process them in order.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Yes - several dozen - some with many thousands of members.

There really is not time to get a campaign together to transfer these.

I've run into the 20 per day limit several times already.

Per the Invite page...email addresses can be pasted into the box in the form:

  • email@...
  • ? ? ?or

  • Display Name <email@...>

?

There can be only one email address per line, no commas or anything like that.

You can instead click the Browse link and upload a flat text file containing all the email addresses in the same format. Do not upload a CSV or Excel file, it will not work.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Moving just the members

Thanks just for clarification that I hadn't don't it wrong . I did do the export CVS one and it showed too much info name emailing address date etc. So I thought I must have done something wrong so I scrapped it . So what we need to do then is c/p each email only to the invite? I was thinking it would just be memberlist only with email

You can't do a transfer without paying.? If you just want to start a new group and invite everyone to join, see /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Inviting-new-members? You can also pay for a Premium group for a month and Direct Add everyone that you have an email address for, see /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-From-Yahoo
