I was told to copy and past this onto my site

Bob Gerard

When I first set up my group on Groups.io in late August, I was terribly busy discerning exactly how Groups.io worked.

I just found a document with this content noting with the notation:

. said copy and past this onto your site:

Can anyone corroborate this? ?Does anyone know exactly where on my Groups.io site I paste it and what it will do?

Many thanks.

Re: Plain Text Only & other questions

y@es,

One of the best features of Yahoo was blocking all HTML crapola giving
the list users legible, readable, text. Some searching here seems to
indicate that exists here in some form. What should I know about that?

There are two related options here:
Normalize HTML Emails - Strip all different fonts and colors from HTML emails.
Plain Text Only - Strip HTML out of messages.

The Normalize option generally gives good results for legibility while preserving the ability to include emphasis (bold, italic) in the text and illustrations inline in the body of the message.

A perennial issue is repliers taking no effort to trim their quoted
text. I once set up a small Mailman list that rejected any post already
containing the Mailman dot.sig; is that viable here?

Sorry, that battle continues here in both versions: convincing email users to trim their bottom-quotes and convincing web users to include enough relevant quote to know what they're talking about.

Groups.io has two mitigations for bottom quotes: they are stripped from Digest messages, and when viewing in the Messages section they are collapsed under a Show quoted text button.

Re: Number of Groups.io Members

Pablo Sanchez

Hi Duane,

At the end of last week we started the migration of our Yahoo Groups list.? It has about 1,000 members.? As of this writing, our main group is at 553.? I plan on shutting down the old YG list this Sunday.? It'll be a?soft shutdown:? I'll put everything under full moderation.? Anyone who posts for the next week will be told to join us here on groups.io? ;)?

My ISP ended confusion by not saying "evening" and instead using "early morning" on all {post-midnight} their maintenance warnings.

In his original notice () Mark said it would be Thursday 10/17 (i.e.: early tomorrow morning in the US).

Groups.io is a global service and depending on your time zone this could be Wednesday evening, etc.

Quite; I have posted a query about this on beta.

Re: Plain Text Only & other questions

You may find groups.io to be acceptable. When replying from the web site it does not by default quote anything. I use 3rd party email programs so I can choose to quote or not. Phone email users may find it difficult to trim a message reply though.

Re: Yahoo Groups death knell?

If you pay for a premium group for one year you can move everything over and current members are set up as part of the group. I believe they only have to accept being in the new group when they get the notification email.?

You don't have to pay for it if you just start a new group. With a tool found online you can retrieve the membership list and grab emails to send out invitations. You can also instead just make an announcement in the old group about the move.?

Walter -- Yep. Unfortunately, access to Yahoo servers is something that is not within groups.io's control. If you can't see it using Yahoo's own web interface, odds are the transfer agent won't be able to, either. For what it's worth, it seems to affect only files and/or photos...the message archive is usually accessible.

The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well. Transferring a group costs a one-time payment of $110 (i.e.: one year of Premium access). If you're willing to roll the dice and pay up front, I'd go ahead and get things set up, get the agent invited to your Yahoo group, and then click the "Give Go Ahead to Transfer" button as soon as you notice that Yahoo has gotten their act together.

In the past, Yahoo has usually fixed their problems eventually; but given the recent notice who knows if they will do so this time around.

Good luck,
Bruce

Re: Reply to Group

Alan,

Hi I did report this some time last year. My tests suggest that it is
a function of the use of a smartphone as a ''terminal'' ...
No, the same problem occurs with any email interface.

The issue is that the footer links are formed as mailto: links - links which open your computer's default mail program to form an outbound message. The link only contains the To address (the group) and the Subject text.

Many email interfaces do not support including message body content in a mailto link, so Groups.io does not include that. Besides, it would typically make the link huge.

Using the Reply function of one's email interface is typically the easier way to do it, rather than having to copy/paste any quote you want manually.

Re: Yahoo Groups death knell?

Thank you for the clear explanation. I found I could download the entire member list from the Yahoo group in .csv format, so I have that saved.

In our case the files and photos belong to the group, so that isn't an issue; but we have the white boxes/empty place holders, and for the past two days haven't been able to see and of those.

When you click on Set Up New Transfer, you'll find a series of checkboxes. If you UNcheck the Transfer Members box, you can delay migrating the members.?

There are no invitations involved in the transfer process...if their accounts are not in Bouncing status in Y!G, they are automatically subscribed/shanghaied (and sent a notice allowing them to opt out). If you want invitations sent out instead, simply upload a flat text file, one email address per line, to send the invitations later (i.e.: outside of the transfer process).

Important Note:? Ownership of files, photos and other group content cannot be assigned to someone who doesn't have a groups.io account. So if you migrate the content without the members, they will lose "ownership" of it, and it will all be reassigned to the group owner. Depending on the situation in your group, this may or may not be objectionable; but generally speaking I don't recommend it.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Number of Groups.io Members

I thought it might be interesting to some to watch the numbers as Yahoo Groups "restructure".? As of a few minutes ago:? Newest group member number - 4,322,225; Newest site member number - 2,015,650; Visible group count - 13,224.

Subject: [GMF] Reply to Group

After receiving an email in an email client on a cellphone or computer the following happens. If I click Reply to Group at the bottom of the email next to View Online the reply removes the email content. It also removes all prior replies in the thread.

However if I click Reply to All from my email client the content is maintained. Is there a way to change this so the content does not get removed?
