Re: Photo Transfer From Yahoo

Mick,

I do understand how to do transfers but in my latest transfer attempt
nothing has happened. No transfer has occurred and no status showing
on the IO transfer web page.
That's what makes me think you missed something.

The drop-list should have an entry for that Y!group which shows it as either in process or complete. If it doesn't then the question is whether you didn't actually start one, or whether you did, but while logged in with a different email address.

The Yahoo Group is still active and operating normally.
Of course.

The transfer agent only copies information; it makes no changes to the Yahoo group.

I have done a successful transfer previously.

On the IO transfer website page it does not show a transfer being processed.

Those two statements are in conflict. Does the Transfer page show the transfer as being completed?

Use the drop-list to select the Yahoo Group in question and check its status.

If you don't see it there, then you're most likely logged in using a different email address than the one which did the transfer.

I cannot get a response from IO support.

Ordinarily I'd say "Surprising", as [email protected] has a history of being very responsive. On the other hand, I have a request in relating to GMF which is five weeks old now with only the automated reply.

There are actually two separate activity limits.

The first is for use of the Yahoo Mail address. If you don't access the Yahoo Mail interface for more than a few months they may make the address inactive, after that point messages sent to that address will be rejected ("bounced"). I don't know if accessing your Yahoo Mail via a POP/IMAP client is sufficient to keep the address alive.

The second is a for use of your Yahoo Account. If you don't access anywhere on Yahoo (Groups, Mail, Sports, Finance, etc.) for more than a year they may delete the account and recycle (let someone new have) the user name. Before that point, if your Yahoo Mail address has been made inactive you can reactivate it simply by visiting the Yahoo Mail pages (while signed in under the corresponding Yahoo Account).

If it has been so long since your last sign in (to anywhere on Yahoo) that the account itself has been deleted then the account recovery procedures will probably not work. But it is worth a try, as they don't necessarily recycle the user name immediately on expiration of the account.

That still leaves the other path open, if you have a working email address subscribed to the group.

That was too pessimistic - there is another path.

If you still have access to any email address (Yahoo Mail or not) that is subscribed to the group then you can create a new Yahoo account, and connect your group membership(s) to the new account via that email address. All that is required is that you be able to receive and send messages from that email address, and that it be already in the group's Manage Members list.

There are some tricks involved in doing so, as Yahoo has changed some features of the account system and they have not updated Yahoo Groups to be fully compatible with the changes.

Darius -- Like Shal, I suspect the account hacking had little to do with you losing access.

What email addresses are associated with your Yahoo account? Can you post an email to your Yahoo Mail account and receive it without bouncing? Yahoo has been deleting accounts due to inactivity lately, and we here in GMF have noticed quite a few of them beginning to bounce posts that are sent to them. If the only email address associated with your Yahoo account is a now-defunct Yahoo Mail one, that may be why you have lost access.

Looking at your group's Message History, there have been a total of two posts in the past 11 years, and none in the past seven. If that's not "inactivity," I don't know what is.

Good luck,
Bruce

Re: Cannot get Yahoo group content

D,

I've been struggling for he past 8 months on figuring out how I can
get photos, attachments from an old Yahoo group of mine, ...
For what it is worth, this is a topic more appropriate to GMF's sister group on Yahoo Groups:

You, or someone, will need to be signed in to Yahoo, using an account which holds a membership in your group, in order to access the Photos and other members-only content.

after the whole Yahoo hack, I couldn't get back on there, ...
Why not?

Many account credentials were exposed, but that didn't of itself cause anyone to lose access to their account. For that to happen someone would have had to go into the account and change its password. So far as I know there haven't been any reports of that happening.

Verizon / Yahoo doesn't support Y!Groups anymore, but they do still offer support for account-related problems, including recovering access to your account if you've forgotten your password.

Its still up, and I searched for it out of curiosity and found it! I
was ecstatic but I couldn't get in since its restricted and requires
approval to which on one has access.
If there are truly no members of the group who can log into their Yahoo account to access the group pages, then no one will have access to its Photos or other content.

If you cannot recover access to your Yahoo account (the one that was a owner/mod of the group), and there are no other owners or mods of the group who can, then you are likely out of luck.

Re: Accessing groups through Yahoo?

Janet,

I've been working with her on an issue and had asked what she sees in
her email messages and she keeps swearing she's not using email but
getting access to all of her groups on groups.io THROUGH the Yahoo
Groups function. Does this make any sense?
No.

Maybe she's confusing her Yahoo Mail interface with Yahoo Groups. If she's only ever participated in Yahoo Groups by email, and uses her Yahoo Mail address for nothing but groups I can almost imagine this happening.

I'm just wondering if, since she has used the group manager stuff on
Yahoo and still gets emails that way, if there's something in the
messages going out from groups.io that is looking to yahoo like it's a
yahoo group?
Looking to Yahoo? No. I'm not even sure what that would mean.

Looking to her, maybe. An email message is an email message, but the footer of a Groups.io group message is distinct from that of a Yahoo Group.

If she could send you a screen shot of what she's seeing you'd probably be able to figure it out pretty quick.

Accessing groups through Yahoo?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have a member who seems to be getting access to our groups.io group through the old Yahoo groups functionality.? ??She is still a member of several groups there and still uses her yahoo.com email address for all of her groups, including our groups.io group.? I've been working with her on an issue and had asked what she sees in her email messages and she keeps swearing she's not using email but getting access to all of her groups on groups.io THROUGH the Yahoo Groups function.? ?Does this make any sense?? ??I'm just wondering if, since she has used the group manager stuff on Yahoo and still gets emails that way, if there's something in the messages going out from groups.io that is looking to yahoo like it's a yahoo group??

Thanks for the quick reply, Bruce.

Your comments make good sense and I'm convinced by your explanation that leaving our group's settings the way they are currently is the best thing to do.

Paul -- My experience suggests the opposite:? People reading the archives are enticed to join when they realize that they cannot post, cannot access the file or photo that someone is talking about, etc. If they cannot read messages at all, then they don't know what they're missing.

Note that once you make your message archives private, there is no way to make it public again if you change your mind. So be very sure this is what you want to do before you flip the switch.

Bruce

Question ref value of who may view the archives based on group settings . . . .

Recently our group's subcription option was changed so it no longer requires moderator approval of new subscribers:

~ Subscriptions to this group do not require approval from the moderators.
~ Archives are visible to anyone.

Now that anyone can may subscribe easily I am wondering whether changing who may view the Archives from 'anyone' to 'only subscribers may view' will provide any incentive for more new members to subscribe so they may see our Archives?

So . . . . I'm hoping that some other GMF Member-moderators will have had experiences in a similar vein with their own groups. Experiences which may corroborate my expectation that altering these two group settngs could tend to encourage new members to subscribe.

Cheers!

Re: Resending invites - Large lists

No. That invitation will not be processed, and all email addresses with such an error will be displayed in the resulting Invite Summary.
I should probably clarify this...

A repeat invitation WILL go out again to any person who is not currently a subscriber. It could be that (s)he accepted your invitation and subsequently left the group. The Accepted status found on this page does not reflect current subscription status, only that -- on some given date -- you sent that email address an invitation and it was accepted.

Repeatedly inviting someone who has voluntarily left your group could be considered annoying behavior. That's why I recommend you clean out the Accepted invitations periodically and not blindly rely on the system to manage it all for you.

Okay, hope this helps...

You can click on the "Status" link at the top of the column to sort the Sent entries to the top. Also consider cleaning things up by deleting any invitations that have already been Accepted. This can be done from the Actions menu ("Cancel/Remove Invite").

No. That invitation will not be processed, and all email addresses with such an error will be displayed in the resulting Invite Summary.

I did note that when you do a resend, it doesn't note the date of the resend anywhere (which would be helpful)
