Re: Revised invite wording

Barry,

It did add right away but also sent two emails to the added email. One with and another without my custom edit.? What am I doing wrong??
Unless you made it inactive, the second email was likely your group's default Welcome notice. The content of that one is fully under your control. See Member Notices in the help page.

Of course, I only want one email to go to each of the members once I add all of them.
?
Review the list on the Member Notices tab of your group's Settings page. If there is a notice of type Welcome in the list, and it is marked active, click on it's name to open its settings. Uncheck the Active Message box, then click the blue Update Notice button at the bottom of the page.

You might want to make it active again after completing your additions, so that people who join by other means get a welcome notice. Or, you can have one Welcome notice written to complement your Direct Add notice, and another for normal member joins, using the active checkbox to choose which is sent. This can be useful if the text you're adding to the Direct Add notice is extensive - you can trim that down for clarity and put the rest in the welcome notice.

Another member notice type to watch for is the Group Guidelines type. It has a checkbox that will cause it to be sent when a member joins the group (by any means). You may or may not want that to go out together with your Direct Add notice.

Re: Revised invite wording

I'm about to stand up a new group and, before directly adding my couple hundred members (they have all been notified and opted in), I ran a quick test of the Direct Add feature (we have premium). ?From this thread, I knew that the "Direct Add" function under "Admin" has the required and unchangeable "Message to Be Sent" but, also, that I could insert some custom text by using the "Customize Message" field just below the required message. ?

I wrote in one line of custom text and saw it update in the "Message to Be Sent" text above. I then entered my test email address and clicked on "Add Members" at bottom left. ?It did add right away but also sent two emails to the added email. One with and another without my custom edit. ?What am I doing wrong? ?Of course, I only want one email to go to each of the members once I add all of them. ?Thank you!

Re: embedded subscribe buttons divert to unrelated page

Isis,

I wouldn't describe your list of subscriptions as "unrelated" to an attempt to subscribe to a group.

But if I click on the button when I am logged in, I end up on my own list of subscriptions, with no indication whether I've subscribed or not, or any mention of the group I'm trying to join.

If in fact you were already a member of the group in question then this is probably a reasonable choice of landing page. Possibly in fact it defaulted to your home page (which is likely to be your /groups page). Maybe your subscription page for that specific group would be a better choice.

Any insight into what might be going awry there?

If you were not already a member of that group then I'd agree that something went awry. I haven't tested this, but if you can confirm whether or not you were already a member of the group that would be useful information.

embedded subscribe buttons divert to unrelated page

My friend embedded subscribe buttons for his groups on his webpage, but they don't behave quite right.

If I click on a subscribe button when I'm not logged into groups.io, I get a page that gives me a couple of options for subscribing to the group I want to join.

But if I click on the button when I am logged in, I end up on my own list of subscriptions, with no indication whether I've subscribed or not, or any mention of the group I'm trying to join.

Any insight into what might be going awry there?

Thanks.

The usual scenario is that someone attempts to send a message using an email address that is not subscribed to the group. Since he has already forwarded the message he originally sent to you, compare the email address in the From field against the one that appears in his member record.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Re: EMAIL ISSUE

Ellen,

Hi, one of the members try to send the below email to the group which we did not receive.?

Does your group's Activity log show any "attempted to send" items corresponding to that date and time? If so, what was the message?

Did the member get back a failure notice from his email service? If so, what did it say?

Was there an issue with the email today.

Re: customizing lock topic response message

Glenn,

Is there any way to customize this to something more specific to our group and less technical?

No.
The only part of the message that comes from Groups.io is the numeric status code and the text one-liner. All the rest is boilerplate from the recipient's email service (often called "mailer daemon").

An improvement has been suggested in beta, but not acted on due to "reasons". You could chime in there in support of the suggestion.

There are ways to mitigate the risk of backscatter, but probably not without using a DMARC-like scheme to authenticate incoming message posts, something that Groups.io has been reluctant to do (but I think they should).

customizing lock topic response message

Glenn Glazer

Right now, what one gets if one replies to a locked message, one gets a rather unfriendly Delivery Status Notification (Failure) message which looks all the world like the group failed to a non-technical user who might miss the explanation of the HTTP 500 in smaller print.

Is there any way to customize this to something more specific to our group and less technical?

Best,

Glenn

Re: forms #files

Lacking a built-in questionnaire function, I'd suggest sending a PDF fill-in form.

If you don't have Adobe Acrobat you can still take any existing PDF file and add text fields using online tools. One of them is (no affiliation).

Some folks who use the Restricted method for Spam Control instead use the Pending Subscription notice to send a questionnaire. Responses go to the +owner address and can be reviewed later by clicking the "+owner Messages" button in their member record.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: forms #files

Thanks. In the end I put up an Excel file up, and asked members to fill it in , save as PDF file, and send to me.
Not very elegant and doesn't work if they don't have Excel.

The only form-like tool in Groups.io is the Database.

You can create a table, and set the table properties so that members can
view the table but not edit the table properties, and can add rows but
edit only their own rows.

You can set how many columns the table has, and what type of information
goes in each column. When someone adds or edits a row they see a simple
"form" page with fields to fill in for each column's data.

A possible downside to this scheme, depending on your application, is
that members will be able to see each others' rows. There does not
appear to be a setting that will let them view only their own rows.

Edited

Anita,

?
Does this mean that my members will be charged to use ?
?
Only if you (the group owner/moderator) decide to charge a fee for joining your group.
?
And, only if your group is on the Premium or Enterprise plan - this feature will not be available to Basic groups.
?
See the tentative help page for the feature here:
?
There are also some topics in the beta group discussing how it might work.

Wiki Updates Links on Feed Page

I can see that Bruce has updated the Wiki with a page about the 20 invitations limit.? On the Feed page though, the link about this in the Wiki Updates section for GMF points to the Chats page.

A bug I suspect which I'll report to support.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

The next #changelog will be on May 3rd.
Because Mark is on vacation until April 29th.

NEW: New Monthly Reminder member notice. These are sent on the 1st of
the month, and you can have multiple active ones.
This may solve an inconvenience for groups that have reminders which they don't want to be part of the formal Guidelines page.

CHANGE: You cannot like messages in locked topics.
Discussion in beta indicates that this one has gone back and forth a few times.

The prevailing thought is that adding Likes on a locked topic is a kind of changing history. Or that it somehow leads to ongoing discussion of the topic (within new topics or off-list wasn't made clear). Given that no one is notified of Likes (presently) I'm not sure how this came to be a concern.

Comments about these are welcome:

INTERNAL: Work on adding the ability to charge for subscriptions.
BUGFIX: Work to fix a parsing bug in Outlook for ICS files with
newlines in the description.
INTERNAL: More changes to automate the process of adding enterprise
groups.

Please call out any you find significant.
