Importing Photos to our group #photos

Hello,

We have, more or less, successfully copied our group from Yahoo but it seems that some photos didn¡¯t. ?We are keen to close the Yahoo one next week but, in view of the current issues we can¡¯t copy the temainder. ?I have copied all of them - only c200 - to the hard disk on my PC.

The question now is: how do I insert them into the Photos section, assuming it is possible?

Looking forward to learning from the experts

Peter

With consideration of daylight hours, receiving emails mostly from the opposite hemisphere overnight is common.

It seems reasonable to expect brief periods of downtime while Mark addresses whatever caused yesterday's crash.?

I suggest we avoid hyper-vigilance on this front.?

Shal,
NEW: You can now invite someone to join a subgroup (they will be added
to the parent as well if they accept).
I've just been looking at this new feature.? I think previously, moderators of subgroups could only use the Direct Add feature (if they had permission) to add members of the main group to their subgroup. Allowing moderators of subgroups to invite members to a subgroup now gives them additional permissions over membership of the main group where they may only be a subscriber.? This goes against the principal of having those permissions in the first place.

Andy

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: You can now claim pending subscribers.
CHANGE: Do not delete pending messages or pending subscriptions older
than 14 days if they've been claimed.
The primary purpose of claiming a pending subscriber is the same as that for claiming a pending message: to prevent another moderator from coincidentally approving or rejecting while you're still working on whether to approve or reject the pending member (or message). In both cases it disables approval (and rejection) by email, and causes a warning if an attempt is made by web.

As a secondary feature, it also protects the pending member (or message) from automatic deletion after 14 days.

BTW, you "claim" a pending message by clicking the Edit button. Even if you then cancel the edit, you've still claimed the message.

Comments about these are welcome:

INTERNAL: Work on automating a tool to test database backups.
INTERNAL: Generating a lot more config files automatically through
software, to make it easier to change configurations/add machines.
INTERNAL: Added ability to off-load queries to replica databases and
have started doing so to reduce the load on the main database.
BUGFIX: Event reminders did not include organizer name.
NEW: Including a login link in direct add notifications.
NEW: You can now invite someone to join a subgroup (they will be added
to the parent as well if they accept).

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal

Re: problems this morning?

As I posted to my group this morning, if this had happened when we were with Yahoo it would have taken at least two weeks to get it resolved.? One week to form a committee to research the problem and a second week for the committee to decide who had to fix it.? We are blessed to have Mark in control.

Re: Hello I have a few questions?

Debbie,

1.What can I do to delete old mail from when I first opened my group
on group .io ?
What Bruce said.

Note that while the messages themselves do not count toward you're group's usage, any attachments or embedded photos do. You can delete those from the message by editing it, while leaving the text content in place, if that helps manage your storage, and doesn't completely void the meaning/utility of the message.

The photos can be found and deleted through the Emailed Photos album in your groups' photos section. The other attachments though you have to delete by individually editing the messages which have them.

2. My second one is that someone has hacked my group accounts a few
times.
That's a fairly serious situation. It shouldn't be possible for someone else to gain access to your Groups.io account, unless they also have access to your inbox at your email service - which could cause you much more trouble than just getting banned from a group. Or unless you pick very poor passwords.

Now its getting old the person Banned me and locks me out.
This confuses me. If they banned you by access to your account, then they've banned their own access as well.

So it must be the case that the person has a separate subscription to your group with owner or moderator role. You should be able to see that in your Group's Members list by choosing the Moderator list.

At the very least you could go to the Activity log and see who banned you, once you're back in.

I got a silent email address in there now that nobody knows so I can
put myself back in but its a pain in the u know what?
This is also confusing because if the person has Admin access to your group then they'd see your "silent" address in the Moderators list.

On the whole, it sounds like there's more to the story (or less) than you've describe so far.

3. If you have other owners/ mods and they all the sudden they removed
there self from the group but now is bothering your member's to join
there group, is there away you can get someone into trouble.?
You certainly can demote, remove, or even ban the person (assuming you've regained ownership role in your group). But as far as Groups.io is concerned only a violation of the Terms of Service would "get someone in trouble".

Maybe the person has violated item 6 in the User Conduct section of the ToS:

"[You agree to not use the Service to:] harvest or collect email
addresses or other contact information of other users from the Service
by electronic or other means for the purposes of sending unsolicited
emails or other unsolicited communications;"

That's basically a "no spamming" rule, but maybe this person's actions in "bothering" your members would qualify as spamming them. Also, if he's "bothered" them on-list it would be a violation of item 1(v), which is about on-list spamming.

... its not a big group of mine but one of my smaller ones and
there older ladies they do not want there email's tossed around what
can I do for them?
Other than being careful who you let into your group, and especially who you give the owner or moderator role, I don't think so.

Thanks Duane. The history is back.

Some of our members were getting restless.

We have 25 members but we clock 1,000 posts

Even during unscheduled problems that's a good place to check first. The list of areas (which normally all say "Operational" in green) are automated checks that are designed to detect problems.

Those checks may not be perfect, but hopefully some of them would have shown this morning's outage even before Mark discovered that the site was down.

At this writing (10:46am Pacific, 18:46 UTC) the Past Incidents log does not show this morning's outage. I suspect that log needs human intervention to update, and Mark may still be busy addressing the cause of the outage. I expect it will eventually be updated to reflect what he's found.

It is possible for group owners (and moderators with proper permissions) to bulk-delete old?topics?using topics-test. See?? If you click the Date button at upper right before doing so, you can change sort order so the older topics appear first. Be careful when doing this, as there is no way to undo it if you make a mistake.

Be advised that messages do *not* count against your storage quota, if that's a concern.

2. My second one is that someone has hacked my group accounts a few times. Now its getting old the person Banned me and locks me out. Any ideas I have changed my password. I got a silent email address in there now that nobody knows so I can put myself back in but its a pain in the u know what?
If you're already using a password and are still getting hacked, the next step is probably to set up two-factor authentication (see?/account?page=security). I have not actually done it so I don't know what's involved...perhaps others can provide further advice.?

I don't fully understand the nature of this problem, or what you mean by someone having their emails "tossed around."

If someone is misbehaving within your group, as the group owner you can of course put them on moderation or ban them. If such interaction is occurring by email (i.e.: outside of the groups.io service), there is little that groups.io can do.

I am appending a relevant section from the groups.io Terms of Service.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Probably so...for most groups. At the same time, there are some groups here (e.g.: Incredimail) for which such things are an integral part of the group experience.

For what it's worth, those who post animated gifs and other elaborate sig lines to GMF can expect to have them removed during moderation. I allowed Joe's to go through because an example seemed appropriate in this context.?

¡±tend to¡± is being overly PC. It may the single most annoying feature that inconsiderate, self-centered peeps could blast members with, it not only being annoying to owners, but everyone else. ?

Before considering doing that, imagine an active member posting 5-6x a day and having 2-3 pix in the sig (we USED TO have one w/ that.) ?100+ pics if nonsense a month. Count em 1200+ a yr.?

As I said during the financial collapse, ¡°Simply because something is possible, and not illegal - doesn¡¯t necessarily make it a good idea to do.¡±
