Jim,

Yes, now I see that in our group, it looks like incoming messages to
[email protected] are logged as activity, but the content is not
store under the Groups Activity log.
The Subject text in the log is a link to the stored message, but only if the message was from a member of the group.

I don't recall at the moment whether storing the content from non-members was discussed. If I had to guess they aren't because the storage is associated with the Member's subscription. Also, spam from non-members might be a concern.

I do see replies that I (or other moderators) sent to the sender, but the original message is lost unless it was an inline part of the reply.

It¡¯s not really a problem that incoming message content is not stored, but I just wanted to make sure I understand the behavior correctly.

The most important part of the message is "Successful Delivery" - the subscriber's mail service accepted the message.? The details are interesting but of no real concern as the message has been delivered and is now in the subscriber's "hands" so to speak.? If you need to follow up with the subscriber/applicant, a direct email is best - either from your email or the Send Message function on the member's page on groups.io.

In computer terms a queue does not imply a human-perceptible delay. More to the point, a code beginning with 2 means success, no further intervention is required.

The statement "Queued mail for delivery" may be technically accurate, but completely meaningless to users: the mail probably passed through that queue and reached the member's Inbox in a fraction of a second.

or does it mean that the person's response to us is waiting to be delivered to us?

No, the Email Delivery History is only about outbound messages, from the group to the members.

Problems related to inbound messages will show up in the group's Activity Log.

This means that outlook accepted the email from your group and has queued it for delivery to the person.? How long it's held is anyone's guess.? If the inbox were full, it would be a different code number instead of 2.6.0, probably 4.2.2 or 5.2.2.? I don't know that it's the best source, but there's a decent explanation at http://emailaddressmanager.com/tips/codes.html

Understanding message in Email Delivery History

I apologize if this seems too basic to most, but I don't understand what the response line is actually telling me because I don't understand the codes listed.? I am just wondering about this message in a potential member's Email Delivery History.? We are awaiting a response from this person before we approve their membership application and the deadline for approval is looming.? This is what I see:

Others?have had problems using email-to-text gateways with Groups.io. I don't know if they were able to resolve the problems. Apparently different carriers' gateways behave differently.

OK, and the information there looks good and presented well.


Wikis are "live", so you can't just save a link and expect it to work forever.
Help links that are temporary are sort of a 'moving target' - that makes them problematic to include in a Member Notices message, which can be automatically sent to new users who are most likely to need the information.

The links should be permanent for the same subject(s) that still needs addressing, only the explanation should be updated. Misnamed Wikis should contain a link (or links) to its/their replacement.

Permanent links would be more helpful for users, plus Owners/Moderators and GMF might not have to deal with those receptive inquiries.

Wikis are only required for what is not clear, nor intuitive.

Disappointed upon searching that PM's don't exist in the IO Groups, right? So the members simply email each other?

Members can initiate PM's to other members via the group's Directory - if the Directory is enabled in the group and if the member you wish to contact has opted to make his/her profile available to other members.

This method sends an email to the other member, without you (the sender) needing to know the other member's address. But your address will be exposed to the other member (the email will be From your address) so that the other member can reply to you privately, by email.

As Bruce mentioned, there is (as yet?) no Inbox or other means to receive such private messages within the Groups.io web interface. So you can only initiate the private conversation here, replies must go through email.

Joe, I see what you're trying to do.? I do that a lot to capture and work with data.? But groups.io is not displaying a tabular view with columns so it's gonna be hard to capture what you want in a way that works (to load into a spreadsheet for example).
Best bet is to find an mbox to csv converter like this ->?

(I googled 'read mbox excel' to find it, there may be others)
