Calendar Cancellations Not Sending Updates #calendar #issue

I feel I've suddenly?turned into "That Guy" with all the questions I've been posting. :-{

A little over a week ago I moved ~50 weekly meetings for my community over to groups.io from my arch nemesis G-Cal.
There has been a huge gotcha regarding meeting cancellations however.? When meetings are deleted (cancelled) from a subgroup calendar it is indeed removed for the calendar, however no notifications are being sent that the meeting has been cancelled.

I've tried checking `Send Invite To Group` and `Send Notice To Group When Event Happens` when processing a cancellation, but no one is receiving anything.

Any ideas? Known issue? User-is-stupid error? Suggested work-around(s)??

Re: Chat Persistence and Search-ability? #chats #question

So here is my usecase: I'm looking at groups.io chat as a possible solution for a global community of opensource developers, many of which are behind national firewalls and cannot get access to other IM systems.?

  • Chat sessions would be long running - a minimum of a 6 month release cycle.
  • Thousands to tens-of-thousands of exchanges for most subgroups over the course of the year.?
  • Only subgroup moderators would be able to create new chat sessions.
  • They must be publicly searchable.
  • They would be need to be retained as searchable even if locked and no longer active.
  • Chat sessions would only be deleted if they were created in error.
For?the native search function within the browser to work as @Duane mentioned, it would imply the entire contents of every chat is read in whenever chat window is opened. Am I misinterpreting that?? If true it seems like it could cause some performance issues.?

Partial mitigation may be to start a new chat session with every release and locking the old one, but not sure if that would be sufficient to ease the perceived issue.
Thoughts anyone?

Re: Gmail Spam Warning on Groups IO messages

Thank you all for the replies. Yes, clicking "Looks Safe" removes it, but getting a lurid orange banner on every one of my posts is somewhat annoying. And, as Shall says, with Gmail not receiving one's own messages is a non-starter.

Yeah, Gmail sees the message From you but via some other service. Nothing to worry about when you recognize it as your own list posting.

How can I prevent them occurring?

I don't think there's any direct remedy. Apart from not receiving your own messages, as Annette suggested. That's a non-starter for me.

As Gerald suggested I suspect that clicking on the Looks safe link will tell Gmail that such messages are "ok". At least I hope that feeds into a learning algorithm. I've only seen this twice so far (I normally read via Thunderbird, and of course the warning does not appear there).
?
Just in case I reported it to support so that Mark will be aware, if he wasn't already. I don't know if there's anything Groups.io can do on their end to reassure Gmail. My understanding is that Groups.io already does everything it can to assure email receivers that its messages are ok.

Ian,

The seemingly obvious answer is to click on the "Looks safe" option. Have you tried that yet?

They indicate "outstanding items" awaiting moderator action, e.g. posts awaiting moderation or membership applications requiring admission or otherwise.

Checked the docs, didn't find any info on these. (attached screen clip). What do they mean?

I know someone that recently had this happen, she was a new group owner and used Gmail.
She?tried for days and finally had to change her Group IO settings so that she didn't receive the mail she posts to get it to stop.

Hope this helps!

Re: New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups

The invitation process for a Yahoo group is described in????This process has been known to fail at times; but usually it gives you a purple error bar immediately. Some people invite the transfer agent at the same time as sending an invitation to someone else, on the premise that if one went through, then the other probably did, too. You could try that.

Also be sure to check status of the transfer on the groups.io site. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8352? There should be a status box at the top of the resulting page. If your invitation went through, it should say "We have received your invitation and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite." If it says something else, come back here and let us know.

When the invitation is accepted, you should receive an email at the +owner address with further instructions. But if you've already done 5 transfers you already know that.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

If you attempted to initiate a transfer of the same group without first deleting the one the other group owner started, this could explain the problems you are having.

Hopefully Mark will be able to provide more insight.

Re: New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups

I did invite transfer to join (and so did two other people) . No user with the name of [email protected]

i tried to have transfer join the yahoo group but i couldn¡¯t find the group because it is a closed group (so we¡¯re some of my other groups)

could it be because the Group has a very long name bayareabookartists?

could it be because I am the owner for 6 Groups? (So you can see that I have successfully done this numerous times)

i dont think my other email went thru, I invited another email of mine to join the YahooGroup. I received the email and accepted to join the group. That user didn¡¯t appear in the Yahoo group either.

thanks for all of your help with this!
cathy

Re: New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups

Sorry I was confusing:
i tried to invite Transfer again, nothing. I had two other people try too, nothing.

i tried inviting another user to YahooGroups and I received the invite email and said yes and that user didn¡¯t appear either.

one theory was that I deleted a transfer member in September and now we are back trying to add it again, would that make a difference.

i will try your idea and get back to you but it is a closed group so I may not be able to request to join

thanks for all of your help with this!
cathy

Re: Mysterious Email Problem

Whatever the reason for the delays, it finally has stopped! It's been two days now, and I'm glad to announce everything is working like normal again.

I don't know what happens if two people work at cross purposes to try to achieve the same transfer objective. It could be that the two of you have separate transfers underway and that is causing gridlock of some kind.

I suggest that you go to the transfer page and click on the "In Process" menu. Select the group you are attempting to transfer. On the ensuing page, delete the transfer.

Now instruct the other owner of your shared groups.io group on how to do the same. Finally, delete the transfer agent's subscription from the Yahoo group and start over.

Cleaning up someone else's mess is always difficult. If the two of you can collaborate to create a clean slate and start over, perhaps things will work better.?

Or just send a message to [email protected]?and ask Mark what's going on.

Good luck,
Bruce?

Re: Transfer from Yahoo never happened. Is it too late?

Trista,

I made "[email protected]" a member of my group on Feb 22. By 18
March nothing had happened ...
Made how?

Yahoo Groups no longer has a Direct Add feature, so as far as I know you can only invite that address, it is then up to Groups.io (Mark) to accept the invitation. Which won't happen unless you completed Step 1 of the instructions before sending the invitation.

However, the yahoo group had a lot of photos and things on it which I
don't have time to transfer manually and don't want to lose. ...
ideally I'd still like to get the stuff transferred from yahoo to io.
Is there any possibility of this being done, ...
To confirm what Bruce said, you can set up a new transfer from your Yahoo Group to your Groups.io group. When you set it up there are checkboxes so you can choose what to copy (Members, Messages, Files, Photos...).

Before setting up the new transfer have a look at the In Process list at the bottom of the instructions page. If your Yahoo Group is listed there that means your prior transfer attempt is stalled there. You are probably best opening that one and using the red Delete Transfer Request button to clear it out.

Note: this list will only show the prior attempt if you are logged in with the same email address that made the prior attempt. Transfer requests in process and completed are only shown to the owner who initiated the transfer, they are not shown to any other owners of the Groups.io group.

Also before setting up the new transfer you may be best off removing the transfer agent from your Yahoo Group. Then send a new invitation after you click "Start Group Transfer Process" on the set up page (Step 2 of instructions).

... or would it mean losing what we now have on the io group?
I'm fairly certain nothing in your Groups.io group would be overwritten or lost.

If you copy the members, any address that is already in your Groups.io group will be skipped.

If you copy the messages, the Y!Group messages will get new message numbers (sequentially from your Groups.io group's current highest message number) but will retain their original posting dates and will sort into your Groups.io group's Messages list by posting date.

Likewise for Photos, Files, Links, and Databases I think. I'm not actually sure what happens if the same exact name already exists in your Groups.io group. The transfer agent may put the transfer on hold and ask you what to do, more likely it would skip those items; but I don't expect that it would overwrite anything.

Re: New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups

Bruce commented:
"Did you invite the transfer agent to join your Yahoo group? The transfer agent will not join without being invited."

I am always cautious about absolutes because they too often come back to make us look silly.

With one transfer I worked on, back when Y! was being so glitchy, and before the masses of groups started transferring, we just weren't able to get Y! to send out an invitation, even with numerous tries. Note that this was before the formal procedure in place now. We were working with Mark to resolve the problem and I suggested that Transfer actually request a membership, which *did* work. After it went through, the transfer completed pretty much normally.

The system is not designed to work that way, but Mark has the ability to work around problems individually if his workload isn't oppressively heavy. There is a reason he prefers the system now, and I'm not suggesting going around the system for most cases, but this isn't Y! where we're working in a vacuum with no support from the operations side.
