Duplicate message to message originator #messages

Hi Everyone,
This may have been asked before or is a very silly?question, but I could not find the answer to it.
When?a member of a group posts a new message topic, he receives?the email for this message twice in his inbox, this happens to all members of our group.
This does NOT happen if one replies to a message, but rather only if he originates a new message.
Is this a setting I am missing? is this intended?

Thanks and sorry if really silly.

A tip: If you modify your group settings to lock topics after 90 days (or whatever), it will help keep subscribers (and you) from replying to a message that was originally sent during the stone age. Don't ask me how I know. :-)

Re: Move latest/individual messages from Yahoo to groups.io? #transfer

Appreciate all the answers, unfortunately,?I could not have scheduled this to coincide with the transfer, as groups.io never tells you when the transfer will be done... I could have asked for a halt in messages, you are correct. We are a fishing chapter and our members are super excited to post their fishing reports, so would have been a problem... thanks for the answers?

Re: Unable to view attached #images online #images

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thanks for the advice on the careful test, including cc¡¯ing myself to get an unadulterated copy. That seems to have helped identify the cause, and I am pretty convinced it is a rendering issue on the ?front end.

I redid one of my tests from last night, using a PNG file that I drag/drop into the message. It failed last night and of course I expected it to fail now, but with the cc I had hoped to see a difference. Imagine my surprise when the new test actually worked and the ?front end rendered the message with the inline image correctly. The difference? Well, I had been sending these test messages to a single topic in my group to contain the clutter. Normally, I was just doing a reply to the first message that started this investigation. In this case, I did the same, only to reduce visual noise to allow an easier raw-source compare, I deleted the quoted content from previous messages. So while the message contained the appropriate ¡°In-Reply-To¡± header, as well as ¡°References¡±, there was no quoted content.

There is no substantial difference in the ¡°img¡± tag in both sources. Here are the working, then not working, versions:

img apple-inline=3D"yes" d=3D"5D9DDEAA-6AAE-4FDD-960A-978CCAD8182B" src=3D"" class=3D¡±"

img apple-inline=3D"yes" id=3D"DED8EA6F-0DBB-42D4-B2C2-9BAC118EAABB" src=3D"" class=3D¡±"

So maybe it has to do with the code that buries the quoted content behind the ¡°...¡± in the UI that is messing up, since the image tag is down below that? Sadly, simply revealing the quoted content in the UI does not reveal the image.

A final test doing exactly the same thing but including quoted content again confirms the image is again missing in the ?UI. I can provide raw source for the messages upon request, but I assume you don¡¯t want me to post that here.

I think what matters here is what you didn't show: the HTML img element in the message body that marks where the image should be placed in the display of the message.

I've had some trouble with this, getting different results from using Thunderbird, using Gmail's web interface, using the group's New Topic or Reply, or editing the message while pending.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/11066

Of course, groups.io does some processing, especially of embedded images. So the src protocol for the image file may not be the same in the group's messages section as it was in the message as sent to the group. It may also be different in the messages as outbound to the members. And then the member's email interface gets into the game.

For example, I've noticed that images I've embedded using the data: protocol tend to display just fine here on site, and in my Thunderbird, but not in Gmail's webmail UI. Go figure.

What I would tell your members is that they will likely have the most consistent success using their mail interface's Insert Photo menu command or button, rather than drag-and-drop or copy/paste. That usually means starting with a photo file that is stored in a file on their computer, and not one that is simply in memory from viewing a web site or having an app display it.

I don't mean to be dispiriting, but if you attempt to sort this out just be aware that you'll have to control for multiple variables in how the message was authored, where it is being viewed, and in the processing in between. Take careful notes, and when posting test images by email cc yourself at an email address where you can view source (so you can tell exactly what you sent, before any processing has been done by Groups.io).

Re: Modified Message-IDs as a Gmail work-around

David,

I changed this thread's title to match its content (should have done that before). The original post is still the changelog entry though.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/7316

Having the same message content arriving with two Message-IDs is a bit
worse than just the user seeing both copies.
Mind you, a given recipient only gets one version, and the Gmail user like me with this feature turned on only gets the Groups.io ID on my own messages.

So it only matters if I reply to my own message. Everyone else's replies would have the original Gmail message-ID. Though this might explain the occasional "mystery" split I've seen on site. If I don't reply (by email) to my own message then the Groups.io ID goes nowhere but into my email folders.

As I understand, this was originally done so that gmail users would
see their own messages.
Correct.

Perhaps the response here is to instruct people on how to configure
gmail for this behavior ...
I've never seen such an instruction that actually worked. Except for tricks that boil down to "post from a different email address".

(The easiest way is to write a catch-all filter rule that then does
nothing. For some reason this causes the sent message to remain in the
inbox instead of being moved to Sent).
I don't want to see the message as sent. I want to see the message as returned, complete with Groups.io's header and footer fields, and possible edits by a moderator while pending.

With this change, however, something changed about the defaults. I
have users now complaining that they are seeing their messages twice,
and we had previously configured things to never send messages with
changed message IDs. Did something change about the default or
configurable behavior in this regard?
I've not noticed any changes.

But then I have the "I always want copies of my own messages" box checked, and always have. So this change should only affect the Message-ID in messages I send as received by others. Now they should be seeing the original Gmail ID; whereas before they (like I) would see the Groups.io ID.

Re: Wiki instruction or tutorial

ken,

In MW you simply paste into the ToC page, ...
Different context for the word ToC. In Groups.io it lists the sections of a single page.

To create something like a ToC over multiple pages one would "simply" paste page links into a page, much like GMF's wiki home page. Numbers and levels would be up to you to implement by hand though.

Hey, if we buy the upgrade do we get a wiki manual? < SMILE >
Maybe if enough people buy an Enterprise upgrade. Just one won't pay for many hours of a good tech writer though. Though I suspect tech writer wouldn't be Mark's first hire, a support rep might be.

Ken,

How does one create an application with no idea how to or guide to
actually use it?
The usual goal is to create controls that are direct and obvious in their usage. For the most part the Wiki is like that - very simple. So don't try to over-think it.

Even the much maligned ToC is simple - perhaps too simple for its own good.

It has only one control: the nesting depth of header levels to include. It has only one way of creating entries: apply Header formats to the section headings. Start at Header 1, use lower levels as needed, without skipping levels.

How about sending a message to the group owner when this happens?
There already is one, assuming you (a mod or owner of the group) have the "Email when a member joins/leaves this group" box checked in your subscription.

Re: Member removed for sending spam only not

Duane,

That's one thing that causes a lot of confusion. Yahoo expects their
FBL notice to be observed, but they don't (at least, didn't) honor the
same request.
I'm pretty certain that's because Yahoo Mail didn't have one until well after all development on Yahoo Groups had ceased.

But it always possible that even if Yahoo Groups were still under active development that they'd do something else, at least with respect to Yahoo Mail.

Re: Member removed for sending spam only not

Patty,

Let me correct that statement: We have a fairly significant amount of
tranferred Yahoo Groups members who actually ARE receiving list
messages in some fashion (individual or digest), but don't know it,
and function as though they are No Mail by going to the list to read
messages.
If that's what they're doing, then you can help them out by setting them to No Email. If they're not checking their email they won't notice, and if there's nothing sent then Yahoo Mail's automatic spam filter no longer matters.

That seems too simple, so there's obviously a flaw I'm not seeing.

Maybe it is only that you don't know which ones to flip until their first unsub event. ([voice="C3PO"] No! Shut them all down!"[/voice]).

In fact, I had one list member vehemently argue with me that,
"I have NEVER had a yahoo.com email".
Oh, I've heard that one before. ;-)

Clearly, this seems to only be an issue for me, ...
I don't think so. This topic doesn't come up time and again for no reason.

Re: member was unsubbed

Anita,

I might consider paying for the group. I would like to know what other
advantages in paying does?
For most groups I suspect the two biggest advantages are Direct Add and the increase in storage to 10 GB (free is 1 GB). See the pricing page for a comparison chart:
/static/pricing

Will the photos of the email folder be better?
No, just bigger.

Which I suppose could be better if it allows you to put off doing anything about it until after Mark implements a bulk delete... ;-)

Re: Move latest/individual messages from Yahoo to groups.io? #transfer

Motti,

The problem is - I have scheduled a smooth real cutover from Yahoo to
groups.io for a date in the future
As I imagine is obvious in retrospect, the cutover should have been coincident with the transfer. Perhaps even calling a halt to messages in the Y!Group immediately before giving the final "go" for the transfer, if you're concerned about messages left behind. But I do understand that with the unpredictable queue delay that may be unacceptable too.

Is there a way to transfer only missing topics since the first
transfer, ...
Not officially, but there is a means to do a second transfer. You can delete the record of the original transfer and schedule another, targeting only the areas you need. HOWEVER this mechanism was intended for situations where you left some areas out of the original transfer, and now want to transfer just those areas. That could have been the case if, for example, the Yahoo group was effectively non-functional in some areas at the time of the original transfer, but is "better" now.

I don't know what would happen if you scheduled another transfer, this time including only the Messages section. You are probably better off asking [email protected] about it before just trying it.

But they don¡¯t all seem to be deleted from the Pending messages list
after being approved by email.
If you're just switching back to the Pending page, left open in a tab or window in your browser, make sure to refresh the page before believing what you see there.

If they're really still in the Pending page look for any kind of failure notice in your email. Maybe the approval wasn't accepted for some reason.

Otherwise, I'm out of guesses.
