Re: Manual transfers from Yahoo Groups

Cal,
?
The YahooMessagesApplication was mentioned here just last week.? It works in a web browser BASED on Chrome and not Chrome itself from how I read it.?

Back in October, I wasn't at all successful getting the YahooMessagesApplication app to even work right.? I then went to try the other Python scripts.? But these too had troubling issues as YG did something different behind the scene preventing the Python scripts from acquiring anything.

Lastly, our group opted with PGO aka PGOffline reader and downloaded for Yahoo Groups (YG).? This worked the very first time right from the install.

SADLY, the clock is ticking.? You have less than 72-hours to get PGO up, running and pulling data from YG.?

Other than the Yahoo Request for the groups' data, and it took myself 9 tries, the PGO was the ONLY way for us to go and it worked.? Our YG owner and then the mods left in 2009.? We were left on auto-pilot.? Some folks went to a PBB forum and others to a FB group.? The core users stayed behind and have now jumped with us to GIO.

Yahoo extending their deadline is like the Titanic throwing out a few more foam rings into the water. It's best to swim fast, and swim hard to get away at all costs. Thank goodness for Mark and GIO... otherwise known as the Carpathia.

Is that two notifcations that there is a message to be moderated, or one telling you that a message is awaiting moderation followed by the post once it has been released?

Do you have a second account to which one of the notifications is being sent, or are they both to the same email address?

Re: transfers from yahoo groups - expected time to completion? #yahoo #transfer

Dennis,

The problem I'm having is with PG Offline.
So why not take it to their forum?

For my part I've had zero trouble using PG Offline or contacting Wilson.

They do NOT respond to repeated emails at all.
Make sure you're using the correct address (info@...), and that your email service isn't set up with overly enthusiastic spam blocking. Perhaps try sending from a different service if you're unsure.

Quick question: Do you work with every board member so that they can send/receive email to/from your domain addresses within their email program of choice? I can't find within GSuite the ability to auto-forward messages to another email outside the domain.

Just trying to figure out the work involved to switch over to GSuite to manage the board forum. Thanks!

Yes, if allowed by group settings. You can attach photos to a message, or create a folder in the Photos area and upload them there.

And can we do the thing as at yahoo groups, when we can see on which message it was a reply?
Topics are threaded as in Yahoo Groups.?

You really should check out the GMF wiki (/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home). Many questions along these lines are already answered there.

Sort of.? It's actually only accurate if there have been no posts in the GIO group before using it, as noted by Larry this morning, /g/GroupManagersForum/message/25903.

PGO-2-GIO is live!

Hi All,
?
I have just finished loading a 3878 message group without incident and that concludes the beta test phase for PGO-2-GIO.
?
PGO-2-GIO (or P2G as we call it internally) accepts PG4 & DB3 format databases.?
?
You can import MBOX data into PGO and then export it as PG4 for import into P2G.
?
Its $50 + $1 per 1000 messages uploaded with the first 10,000 free.
There is no charge for multiple groups.
?
It does attachments (GIO does not) and it preserves YG message numbers (GIO does not).
?
It does not upload members (which GIO did do).
?
It also does Files & Photos.
?
My recommendation is to create a sub group of your groups.io main group called "Yahoo Archive"? or similar and temporarily change your display name on groups.io to ¡°Yahoo Archive¡±? or similar when you do the actual posting.
?
All posted messages, files & photos will appear to come from that account.
?
It is not possible to retain the original attribution as that would require that every group member that ever posted in YG join your group and then you would need to log in & out of each members account to post as them.
?
Searching messages will still work because the original YG message number, poster & date/time of posting are retained in the message body.
?
Obviously, when you set the sub group up, do not invite anyone to it till you¡¯ve loaded the archive data and set your own Notifications to off for the sub group or you¡¯ll get an email for every message you add.
?
Also, make sure ¡°moderation¡± is OFF for the user you use to do the posting.
?
?
Cheers,
?
Wilson.

I call it groups dot IO. It flows just fine off of mine. In fact it is such unique name that it is easy to remember.

What Larry said.

Or, don't remove your primary email address, leave it in the group as a
backup owner "just in case".

Unless you're planning to make the Members list available to members
(most groups don't) the members won't know that your primary address is
associated with the group - unless you post using that address.

We had a similar situation several years ago. I am co-administrator of a listserv (real L-Soft listserv) that runs on a co-op Linux server that was located in the home of one of our members. He wanted to participate actively in discussions, but wanted to remain anonymous so other members would not give weight to the fact that he essentially completely controlled the operating environment when he posted. A secondary reason may have been that he and his wife were retired spooks who had worked in Navy intelligence. So he had a ¡°public¡± email address and a private one that he just used to communicate with the other admins. He passed away several years ago, and at that time we were finally able to reveal his identity.

As far as the server is concerned, we moved it to a virtual instance on because we clearly couldn¡¯t leave it in his now empty home.

Best regards,
Larry

Re: An announcement from PG Offline - Y! group transfer extension!?

Bruce,
?
True statement ...
?
"...If you want attachments and photos, I suspect you still have only 4 days to get your data using PGO. No sympathy for procrastinators."

We've done the PGOffline aka PGO and the Yahoo Download.? PGO will get all the photos AND put them into albums per the metadata of the YG member who uploaded them.? BUT, not sure who on my end actually did that because our owner and mods left back in 2009.? Still got it ALL thanks to PGO !!!

As for the Databases, you need to DL them from your YG yourself right on that Database page.? Click on the ability to DL as a CSV file that can easily import to Excel or OpenOffice.

Re: Yahoo has extended deadline for downloading to January 31, 2020 11:59 PST #yahoo

John,

KEEP TRYING.

It took 9 tries before Yahoo found all the data for my 4 groups to download.

This took over 5 weeks from the October 31st date.?

Thus, put out your request.? When you get a reply and then look at the download page that has NOTHING, then DELETE the request and START OVER.? It's the ONLY way to keep at Yahoo to GET YOUR DATA.

Lilly Tomlin eventually will get it right in the end.? LOL
