Re: Number of Groups.io Members

But for the foresight of Mark, millions of Yahoo group users would be stranded today.
Big corporations have no interest other than making money.
It is the great idea in the mind of a dedicated person that blossoms into something great which really helps everyone.

It's no coincidence that Mark was also the architect of ONElist in 1998.
This then became eGroups and was subsequently sold to Yahoo, where it
turned into Yahoo Groups.

Yahoo then kept making "improvements" until everything finally
collapsed.? And here we all are.

Mark tells the full story of how he founded Groups.io:

Re: Owner really messed up and got dropped #changeemail

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have tried signing in with old address already. ?No luck. ?Says I am not verified yet so cannot get in. ?

And I know the address changed as I am in the group twice. ?Once as owner and one as a regular member (with different email addresses). ?That way I can see what regular members see (as it is different than what an owner sees). ?So I can see my owner address was changed and I could not have verified the change since I never could have received it.

I even tried contacting the owner but it must send to the improper address, so not coming to me.

Any way for Groups to change my address to be proper or make my secondary address an owner?

It shouldn't have changed unless you clicked the link in the verification email.? As Bruce said, try signing in with your original account/email.

For creating a user, there's the Register User API
</api#user>, but it looks like you can only set the initial
password. Though, on another branch of this thread it looks like you're
actually looking for single-sign on, so this is probably not what you're
looking for in practice.
Thank you, Christopher. I'll look into this.

The API must be called over a HTTPS connection

you can't trust HTTPS, then you lost a long time ago. :-)
Thanks again, Christopher. I'm realizing now that my goal of single-sign-in (Wordpress -> Groups.io) is a pipe dream. I can't modify/manage users' settings because the relationship of users to groups is many-to-many, and the users' universal credentials (of course) need to remain independent of any one group. Check. Then, since I don't want my users to have to sign up for Google or Facebook, those being the recognized validators of authority, I would likely be unable to self-generate a token that Groups.IO API would grant sufficient proof for a Groups.io login. Understood.

We're a non-profit and can't afford Enterprise membership, but I sense that Auth0 or another method created "by request" would either be unfeasible or too expensive for us. I understand now why the security is the way it is, and it looks to have been designed well. And of course I trust HTTPS--it's just that I would never be able to obtain a user's password in the first place to make the call--unless, that is, they had already given it to me, which is a messy manual workflow on its own, and something I would never want to do.

Thank you all again for your helpful replies. Thanks for helping me to realize both the beauty of the API / functionality, and that I can't get single-sign-on.

Best,
Gary

Looks good. The links to bylaws, constitution are clickable. You might want to reconsider this and put them in Files in your group.

A style thing - I would take the underlining off your club name. Underlining usually means clickable. And off Pride of Ownership.?
With Advanced Toolbar, you can add formatting to these two, including colour!

Francies -- I noticed that, too. There appears to be some position: absolute or other style directives messing things up, such that content is lying on top of each other.

Moving to Groups.io without Yahoo Easy Transfer #howtoguide

Edited

A summary of your choices in light of recent stoppage of Easy Group Transfer.

This page discusses methods for moving any archived group content you have, whether from a Yahoo Group or other list/group service, into a Groups.io group.
Some of it is about options to archive your messages, etc. that are on Yahoo. Only a few days more for that.

Owner really messed up and got dropped #changeemail

As an owner I really, really messed up.? I changed my email address except I typed in the wrong ending.? I typed in gmail.net when I should have been gmail.com.? So the address gets changed and suddenly I am a NC owner member with the wrong address.? Never got the confirmation email, cannot get into my own group to fix either.?

What can be done?

If i try to get in by using the wrong ending, I just get notified that I have not been approved yet.
Group in question is Groups.io/g/TCMG

Re: Search For Groups

OK, think I got something working right now.?? The Alexa and DuckDuckGo BOTs already have made a pass-thru the main page.? On DDG, with the search of Yanmar Owners Group, the result ranking is #4.? It's a few above the old YG version.? Without the word Group, it's much further down the rankings.? In time I hope, this too would over shadow the YG version.
?
I'll have to hit google, bing and yahoo a little later to be sure their BOT crawls thru.
?
So, white-on-white text will help the BOTs like meta data tags and descriptions.? It's not perfect, but it does help.?

With the sub-group of the ARCHIVE messages, I may use the Yahoo term to tag that location for members who hadn't joined yet after the move and Yahoo goes DARK.

service never see the user's password.

Most POP, IMAP, and SMTP servers I've used work similarly to the login API:
they establish a secure connection and then send the username and password
over the connection. Yes, there's legacy here, as these protocols were
invented a long time ago.

As I understand it the API is rapidly evolving right now due to mobile app development (its primary application), so if you're relying on documentation you may find that it is out of date.

Re: LInk Forum Membership with Organization Membership #membership #api #website #subscription

Gary,

... I'm trying to figure out a way to use the API to pre-log-in a website user from within WordPress, and through API Login functionality, log them into Groups.IO automatically.

Do you mean that you want to redirect a user of your WordPress site directly to your Groups.io group and have them land in a logged-in session? If so, that's way out of my depth (and it doesn't seem like it should be possible).

Maybe you could somehow trigger the Email Link To Log In function, targeting their email address. But they'd have to receive and click through that email message to land in a logged in session, it wouldn't be direct web site to web site. You could explain it to the user as a necessary verification of their email address.

Hi, Chris -

I should have been more clear in my initial request--sorry about that. Okay, here's my goal:

Our organization has a website that has special functionality and a repository of useful data available only to members. They have to log in to the website to get at it.
