Hi,

I'm trying this, and getting error on the first message

Modification of a read-only value attempted at ./import.pl line 218, <GEN0> line 5.

Anybody overcome this?

I have not created all the new members (our group is not premium and so I cannot bulk add them) and I have not created map.txt. Is an accurate/complete map.txt mandatory or optional?

Thank you

Actually, even simpler.? You can demote yourself after there's another owner.? Give yourself whatever privileges you think you should have, but remember that the new owner can change those.

Transfer Ownership of groups.io group?

Hi,
? What is the process for transferring ownership of a groups.io group?? I need
to do this for a group I'm the owner of - but I'm unclear on the best process.

? What I -think- is the right way is to first make someone else a "co-owner"

Re: Premium Group?

I added the bracketed sentence to the GMF transfer instructions and to the FAQ:

Transfers require pre-payment of an upgrade of the group to the Premium Yearly or Enterprise plan. (You cannot be on a month-to-month payment plan.)

Given that this problem keeps arising I went and had a look at the published instructions, and I can sort of see why people get it wrong.

Step one of the transfer process reads Create your new Groups.io group and upgrade it to premium for a year. Although I know what it means, that is in part down to hindsight; it is arguably not entirely clear. (Most of the groups of which I am a member migrated long before charging for a transfer was introduced.)

Step 5 of the process has what is almost an afterthought to it, reading Your group must be signed up for the Premium Yearly plan.?(Original in bold)?

On the one hand that statement ought to remove any ambiguity left over after step one; at the same time it really ought to have beeen included as an integral part of step 1. On the other hand I would have thought that prospective refugees would have read all the instructions before starting.

I do sometimes think that some of the "stuff" that comes out from Groups.io HQ is not as clear as it might be. The original emails that were sent out when members were removed for marking a message as spam were a couple that I encountered very early on.

Premium Group?

Richard

Greetings,

I am the owner of [email protected]?and, as with many folks, having trouble getting my previous groups Genealogical Brickwalls@...?transferred to groups.io. ?The Yahoo group has 1,470 members.

The [email protected]?has been made Premium to facilitate the transfer from Yahoo. I chose the $20/moth Premium option. ?I have been told that to actually get the group transferred I must pay the full $220 instead of the $20/month.
?
Can anyone tell me, with certainty, if the $220 is required to make the transfer happen?

I would tell you that I have carefully followed all of the other directions but have not received a confirmation from groups.io that they have received my transfer request.

Richard

I don't use the automatic lock or moderate functions on my groups for messages.? On the social groups, it's of no consequence.? On the tech groups, we encourage folks to continue discussion in the same thread as new information is learned.? I have moderated a few topics manually, but not many.

I do have some hashtags that timeout.? The #ForSale deletes the topic after 30 days, as do #Wanted and #Free.

Re: Topic duration?

My opinion -- delete or archive obsolete and trivial social chats rapidly. Topics that remain current and helpful about "how to" or "difficulties and workarounds" should be kept as long as needed. Of course, who would have to monitor topics???

That's a function of how the reply was made and which email client, if any, was used.? GIO does it's best to find quotes at the end of a messages, then hide them, but there are so many possibilities that it can't find them all.? Of course, a top quote, like I used here, won't be hidden.

Can I ask why? Selective quoting is a much better way of replying to a previous message. It's bad enough having members reply to posts by email with the preceding email(s) strung out below. Selective quotes are simply a much more economical way of replying. Why should anyone have to click a blue button simply to find out what message is being replied to?

Isis,

MBOX format is a standardised format for, well, mailboxes. Personally I use the Thunderbird email client (free) (with the 'ImportExportTolls NG' add-on (also free) which knows how to read & write mbox files. Other tools/mail clients are available!

When I lived in Japan, I wasnt fleunt in written kanji but I did recognize common formatting of websites and emails which I suspect your users may be as well. Many might try clicking on the link so in the Confirmation Email which is all they really need to do.?

You have probably thought of this, if not here goes:
Capture the Confirmation Email that GIO sent to you in an image. Circle the blue link that they need to click and then email the?image to your prospective members along with an explanation in your native language to click on the circled link.?

Re: How do I track the amount of storage used in my group?

Thanks Bruce,,?
Yep I know how to do it manually, but I have about 35 subgroups going at one time, and it is a pain to have to select each one and manually add to a total. I was hoping that I had missed a way to do it in the main group. If things ever settle down I will ask for an enhancement.

Re: yG Privacy Dashboard download #yahooprivacydashboard #ioimportpl

Thanks, BMaverick.

I actually don't use WiFi at all usually, or any wireless technology. I'm completely wired at my house, but my DSL connection is the slowest version there is, so a couple of GB take an entire day to download. I didn't see your response before I went to my friend's, but I'm happy to report that her WiFi connection got the job done. Just barely downloaded it all in an hour, so just under the wire (no pun intended). I don't think I would have been able to connect the cable there, since it's a shared connection, with the router far away from the computer. Very relieved it worked out though.

As I'm unzipping the files, I can see that all my groups are represented, but I can't yet figure out if it's all the messages of each group, or just my own. There are many more folders within the folders that need to be unzipped, so that's going to take a while, and then I have to figure out how I can actually look at them. I thought it would be JSON files, but it don't see any file extension, though the file names say MBOX, so I'm a little confused about how to open them.

'show quoted text' vs showing quoted text
