Hi Frances,

Great, thanks for the tip. ?Disabling the ones we aren't using will help,
even if I can't change the sequence.

Yes, disable them. In Admin, Settings. You can also hide subgroups but that is from the settings of the subgroup.

Hi Frances,
Thanks for this. ?Unfortunately I really want to have control over the sequence of the folders
(and files) irrespective of their names (or numbers). ?I'm hoping there is some hidden way to
do this, but I haven't found it yet... I suppose in a pinch I could put a number at the start of?
every folder/file name, in the sequence I want, but that would not look great.
If anyone else has ideas about this, let me know...
Thanks,

I just tested this. The default for folders is alphabetical. If you create a new one, it will be put in alphabetical order in the right place. (First word)?

But I also found that you can number them and if you change folder name, they will rearrange themselves. And numbered folders come before alphabetical folders.

Within folders, you can move a file to a different top level (i.e. another folder) by using the scissor / move icon.

The little paper and pencil icon is an update. You can change the titles here.

Hope this helps! Explore a bit.

True. So in addition the new group owner also needs to go to: Admin. > Settings > Spam Control

. . . and select 'Restricted Membership' so members have to be approved before being allowed to join the group;

. . . as well as selecting 'Announcement Group' so that then only moderators/owners are allowed to post.

That should do it.

The other message reads:"That Yahoo Group is already a part of another transfer."
That means exactly what it says. You cannot have two active transfers for the same Yahoo Group.

If you yourself have set up this Yahoo group for a transfer, you will have to delete the completed transfer before you can transfer it again. If you don't have this group in your list, then someone else does, and you'll have to figure out who might have done that and work through it with them.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Easy transfer of a subgroup

I have created a group and successfully used easy transfer to transfer the contents of a Yahoo Group to my new Groups.io group. The process went very well.
Now i want to transfer subgroups into the primary group. I added the subgroup but when i try to do the easy transfer it indicates that i need to pay the annual subscription which i have already done. The other message reads:"That Yahoo Group is already a part of another transfer."
So could someone please explain to me how to correctly use the easy transfer process for a subgroup.
I have searched the messages and files but could not find the answer
Thank you
Gary

Re: (not) announcement-group

Ronaldo,

That 'Announcement Group' setting is especially useful when one is setting up a new group and preparing for a transfer from YGroups to GIO, but hasn't yet announced the impending move to the membeship of the already existing (old) group. The 'Announcement Group' setting effectively keeps members of the original group from subscribing and/or posting to the new group until the owner has it completely set up and ready to go.

And during the set-up time of the new group it's also helpful to change the Privacy Setting of the group so that it is not listed in in the directory. This keeps anyone from accidentally finding the new group annd attempting to join it 'til the owner has it ready for use by the membership.

Finally, once the new group is ready and the transfer of the membership and other data is complete then the membership of the original group can be alerted and the settings of the new groups can be changed so that it is available for posting to and is also listed in the directory.

This arrangement worked very well for me while I was preparing for the transfer of my group from YGroups to GIO!

OK ¨C Hope this is helpful.

placement, appearance, and names of links on left side of page? #database #howto #links #settings #files

Hi, ?I have three questions as I'm setting things up for a new group.

1. ?Is there a way to reorganize (reorder) the links on the left-hand side of the page?
2. ?Can can the names of the links on the left-hand side be modified?
3. ?Is it possible to suppress?some of the links that the group won't be using?

The group I've created will be using the site primarily to share files with one another and also to
share and describe links to other useful information (using the "Database" function). ?Since those?
are the two most important functions for the group, I'd like to move "Files"up higher on the list
of links on the left-hand side of the page

Also, since we're using the?Database section to store links to?information for the group, I'd like
to rename it "Links" instead, so it will be easier for users to understand what's there.

Finally, there are some functions we won't be using (or not soon anyway), so to keep things
as simple as possible for users I'd like to just have the functions we're actually going to use
appear on the left hand side. ?Is it possible to arrange that?

Thanks for any help with this.

Frances,
I¡¯m not sure I understand. I don¡¯t own this particular group, I¡¯m just a member. The old Yahoo group still exists, but is no longer active. The owner has made sure of that. The messages are coming from the Groups.io group to both of my e-mail addresses.?

If it were me, I'd keep the subgroup, but change the settings for it so it's 'hidden'.? The short form of the group address will work for the main group, assuming that you're happy with it, though it will always show the long one on the home page.? For example, if the home page says [email protected] you can send mail to [email protected] and end up at the same place.?? Deleting the subgroup should revert the name to that anyway.? If you delete the subgroup, you'd also need to 'fix' any notices you've set up so they have the correct information in them.? By keeping the subgroup, you have the option to use it later without going through the hassles associated with creating (or deleting) one.

Question about Renaming a Group #groupname

Karen

I read the groups.io Wiki page on this topic, but am still not certain about the ramifications of changing a group name or what constitutes changing a group's name.

Does it count as "renaming a group" if I delete a subgroup I have created? I ask because adding a subgroup caused the word "main" to be added to our group name. I want to forgo the subgroup function and get a simpler name/address for our group.

Questions:

#1 If I delete the subgroup, will that cause all the consequences listed below? (culled from the Wiki)

If the answer is "no," then all is well.

If the answer is "yes," can you explain in more detail? about? how this will affect the archived email messages??

  • Groups.io will NOT parse old group content for group-related links and update them to the new URL. Therefore, many of the links to group content in the?Message Archive (and of course, any previously-sent emails), your home page, and your wiki will likely now point to never-never land (404 not found).
  • This includes the reply-to address and many of the links in group message footers!

Will it mean that group members can't search the archives because they remain linked to that name with "main" in it?

Does it mean they can't hit reply to an archived message created prior to my deleting the subgroup?

I can't remember if I created the subgroup prior to Groups.io moving our group over from Yahoo or not. Does it matter?

Please advise.
I would like to revert to the simpler group name, but don't want to render our archive unsearchable or unresponsive.

Thank you for all the good support that Groups.io offers.

Best,

Karen at GlyphStud

Here's the automated reply to my email.
Clicking on the link on the homepage of my group brings up an email that I must just send. No info needed. (I did get a prompt from my email account about the blank subject line - I ignored it.)

The reply was fairly useful.

You can't change the links to subscribe, etc. on the homepage of your group.

Each moderator has his or her own account but not a specific address for moderation.

You can, as you say, decide to allow moderators (or even just one moderator) receive the group owner emails.
Go to Members, find the moderators. Click in the name, not the checkbox. Scroll down.
Go to Owner Email. Change, and save.

Help just sends back some canned help. Try it and see!
