Re: transferring from yahoo best practices

I was looking for the transfer set up page that Bruce spoke of and found?/edittransfer?start=1? I don't see any option to opt out of having a notice sent to everyone upon transfer.

Suzanne -- It appears that you've already given the go-ahead to transfer and are counting down your place in the upload queue. That being so, it's too late to change the entries in the checkboxes. If you want to make any changes now you will have to contact support ([email protected]).?

The folks on the yahoo list know the group is being transferred and have been supportive.? The reason I want to postpone the welcome email is that I got the message below from in an email after I initiated the transfer request.? If there is anything I have to do manually or try to figure out how to clean up, I was hoping to do that before the welcome message was sent.
While that's fine, it's also rather unlikely.?

To be clear, the checkbox refers to the transfer completion notification, not the welcome notice. As for the latter, I'm not longer certain it would be sent in any event.

I think I've read about some folks who have had to request the transfer be done a second time to get satisfactory results - or have I misunderstood this?
This was more common in the past, but there haven't been many recent reports to that effect. Most of the discussions of "missing content" in the past three weeks have been from those who simply needed to wait for the message indexing to catch up, or who read the number of topics on the group home page and mistook that for the number of messages. And if a few files or photos are left behind, it's usually easier to move the stragglers manually (if you can get to them at all) than it is to request a new transfer.

GMF is a help group, and it's mostly people needing help (or offering help) who post here. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that the silent majority go through all this just fine and we never hear a word from them.

Regards,
Bruce

IMPORTANT:?Yahoo Groups has been very unreliable lately. We will do our very best, but there is a good chance that we may not be able to transfer all of your messages, photos or files. We will tell you which ones we were not able to transfer. Also, the migration queue is several days long at this point. Please be patient as we work through the backlog of transfer requests.??

Mike -- For what it's worth, I have reported this as a bug to support, at least in the context of Yahoo group transfers. I haven't yet received a response. I don't know if anyone will bother to work on this, with the understanding that in about three more weeks there aren't going to be any more Yahoo transfers.

Any ideas what is causing this and what steps I can take to make the Welcome message be

To this point, no one has reported that any new people joining their group after the transfer are failing to receive it, just in the context of a transfer. If you have clear evidence that's happening too, please report back, because that's an entirely different problem.

For what it's worth, I just subscribed to my test group using a different email address from what I usually use. I first got the groups.io generic confirmation email, then the group's Pending Subscription notice...but...I never got the active the Welcome notice, either...

Hmmm...that's very disturbing. I can assure you that it used to work. I'd still appreciate it if others could verify.

I've sent the Welcome message "Manually" as a separate message
to the group email address.
I really think that's your best bet, especially under the circumstances. Be sure to send it as a Special Notice.?

If the transfer request was accepted, then your transfer page should be telling you to do the invite from your Yahoo group to [email protected]

This is something you must do yourself from your own Yahoo group.

Log into the yahoo group and invite [email protected] to be a member of your group.

When your invitation is accepted the status page will tell you.? Then yiu log into your Yahoo group again. Find the new member. Member name will be groups.io and that member will have the [email protected] email address. Click on the member name and make grouos.io a moderator of your yahoo group but leave the permission boxes unchecked.? Your new status once this is done should change to show you awaiting export, status 1.

This might be something of a long shot but don't sub - groups have to share their storage both with one another and with their parent group? Assuming that to be the case is the total quoted for the sub - group only or is it an aggregrate across parent and children?

It just could be that a lot of material elsewhere has filled the store.

Re: hashtag from topic? #hashtags

So I went and looked, and apparently you can set a hashtag to automatically lock or delete a thread after a period of time, but not moderate. Wanted to correct that statement I made before.

Also, there is a limited number of times you can select: one hour, one day, one week, .... It's not something I could specify to lock after 2 days as I wanted / thought.

So my questions are:?
1) for the first bullet?point above, how do I specify for GIO NOT to send a notice to every member?
Suzanne -- There is a checkbox for this on the transfer setup page (where you decide what areas of the group to transfer).

2) If the Welcome message is not active at the time of the transfer, does that mean it will not be sent??
Such is my understanding, although others have recently reported that it isn't sent anyway (ref:?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/40205879#23064).

And if so, then how is it best to send a welcome message when I am ready?
You can send any existing notice to any collection of members by clicking the checkboxes in the Member List and selecting Send Message from the Actions menu. There is a pull-down menu on the subsequent page where you can select the Member Notice that you want to send.

But I really think it's a whole lot simpler -- and are more likely to induce others to follow suit -- if you take whatever parts of the transfer summary that you want to share and whatever else you want to say and just post it to the group as a Special Notice.?

Suzanne, I do suggest you give careful consideration to Sharon's response. If it were me, I'd just be up-front about telling everyone what's going on, and also go ahead and let the groups.io notification be sent. There are plenty of subscribers who manage to get paranoid on their own without the group Owner becoming all secretive and giving them a reason to be.

Bruce

Groups.io can transfer message archives, properly owned and properly threaded, (without attachments, however), photos, files, links and databases.
Calendar entries are not copied at this time.
Subscribers (members) are also transferred, maintaining their subscription options and ownership of each message and other group content.

If someone is "no mail" in YG and you have opted to disallow that in Groups.io, they are transferred as Special Notices only.

Just an FYI.

In one of the groups we moved to GIO, there were many who had chosen 'no email' in YG. We decided not to provide the option.
Even though some members left, most continued.
One issue some had was the message traffic. Suggested they opt for Digest. GIO Digest is nicely formatted.

Just FYI, some of my group members had were upset by the move ¡ª totally disconcerting. I had warned them and explained the why but when it happened it was like I was surreptitiously sending all messages to the CIA. That message was important because it did get their attention.

It was also a chance to clean the list because about 300 of 3,000+ members unsubscribed. I did a random check and they were either bouncing or had moved and never bothered to unsubscribe.

No. A hashtag IS a string in the topic.

2. I know you can lock or moderate a hashtag after a certain time. Is it also possible to change it over to reply to the OP or the sender at that time as well?
I'm afraid not. Even if you could, it's not possible to retrieve already-sent emails and change the reply-to field in those headers.

Never hurts to ask.
