group name different in groups.io than it was in yahoo groups - Will this be a problem

Hi,
I'm waiting for my group to transfer(#491 in the queue),? ?I gave my new group a shorter name in groups.io than it was in yahoo groups.? Will this cause any problems?

Two other questions:
Is there a link to see the queue???

Is it recommended that I add all the members to groups.io while I wait for the transfer to complete?? This private group has a small membership (20 people), but is quite active.

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Possible to transfer orphaned Yahoo group?

I am a member of a Yahoo group but am not moderator. The moderator is unresponsive. Is there any way of transferring the group contents from Yahoo to groups.io without being the Yahoo moderator?
You might read this thread.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19672

You might also just start a new group here, invite members. Or announce in YahooGroups.?

That would be an entirely logical conclusion. Time for an email to [email protected] I think.

Yes, I sent them an email yesterday, and bumped it again today. Haven't heard anything yet.

FWIW, I finally got hold of management, and they fixed it. It was something internal, and perhaps left over from the transfer process. My group is up.

Some people have tried to invite the transfer agent to their Groups.io group.
Perhaps YahooGroups is acting up.

You are trying to add [email protected], to the YAHOO group, right?

Mine went in no trouble.

There are instructions about bouncing on GMF wiki -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/dealing-with-bouncing

However you'll need to decide about Yahoo!?

Good luck.

Re: Transfer Complete - some members "bounced"

As you undoubtedly know, as a moderator at Yahoo, under Manage Members, I can pull up a list of ¡°Bouncing.¡± I now see that it is 182 long, none are marked ¡°No Emails¡± but most of them joined many years ago and I believe that the problem is that their emails are all invalid. That means that they were not receiving any communications but may have been posting and reading.

In an unrelated problem, nothing I post in the Yahoo group is being displayed. My guess is that the Yahoo moderators are deleting it.

John B.,

I've been wondering whether there will be any problems if people post
to Groups.io while the migration from Yahoo is in progress. Does
anyone have experience with this?
I do, and there is no problem. The message numbers will get intermingled, but that's only noticeable using the previous/next buttons in the messages view.

I've been wondering whether there will be any problems if people post to Groups.io while the migration from Yahoo is in progress.? Does anyone have experience with this??

I have heard something to the effect that people signing-up before the account is moved over, will cause the Yahoo "Join Date" and old membership settings to be ignored.? But are there any bad effects on the migration of messages, etc.??

Thanks for any advice!!

You do have to replace ourgroupname with the name of an actual group, such as this one,

Hi Sarah... because we would lose our 18 year history of messages and would no longer have digest mode. Would really hate to be peppered with individual messages.

This is the shortest that will work reliably. (As you've found.)? When you don't use the /g/OurGroupName, the system can't be sure if it should go to main or a subgroup, so may do nothing.

I did a quick search.? The first group that I came across that was transferred is ? You can't see everything unless you join, but their messages are public, so you could look at some old ones to see how they look.? On the home page under Message History, click on any month before September 2014 (when groups.io started.)

full and truncated URLs for main group? #groupname

I have created a group and subgroups.

When I created the subgroups, the original group (for all members) was renamed to add the word "main" to the URL and to the email address.

?

The URL became this:

https://main.groups.io/g/OurGroupName

?

Emails to post to the list would be addressed to:

[email protected]

?

I understand that this is supposed to happen, and that's fine.

?

The word "main" was confusing for my group.

Therefore, I changed the word "main" to the same word as the name of my group.

?

So now now the URL of the mail group is:

https://OurGroupName.groups.io/g/OurGroupName

?

and emails are sent to:

[email protected]

?

That is a bit odd, but it was better than the word "main" in our case.

?

Question:

Can I give out my URL as simply this:

https://OurGroupName.groups.io

(without the ending of ".io/g/main" or ".io/g/OurGroupName")?

?

?

I've tried that, and sometimes it automatically goes to the full URL.

Other times, it sits there stalling.

?

If that's supposed to work, I'd rather give out the short (truncated) form of the URL.

?

You need to decide whether you want to move your message archive, etc. If not, you can open a free basic group and invite people. See the wiki pages above.

Here's info about transferring from Yahoo.?
If you wish to move everything, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups

If you want to see how groups work, why not look for a group that interests you?
