Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?
Shal,
this probably is a stupid question for all IT-versed people like you. But I still pose it. If some one has a yahoo address created the way you describe in your message, and this person is - by transfer - now member of one of the groups.io, and if this person stays logged in over months in the new group and opens messages or files within the group in order to read them, without posting anything. Does yahoo then recognize this person as active with their address and spares him or her from bouncing? Victoria |
Re: Concerning Databases
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBob, ? I am really not experienced with databases. We moved, what was called ¡°Links¡± at Yahoo to what is called ¡°Database¡±. The so called links at Yahoo contained hundreds of internet connections. Some of the links had hundreds of sublinks which were not moved to groups.io. I must say the yahoo version of just inserting links into a mask and give a short description was certainly much more comfortagle than the datavase version, at least in my not so IT-versed opinion. Since we moved to groups.io a year and a half ago my moderator in charge is struggling to get all this handled. But I think this is a different problem. ***I plan on writing a support request that for Databases that would include a normal default to List mode and a switch for the owner to select either or both modes as well as the initial default for each database plus a couple more items like an option to define the record index number increment between records and a way to reset the index number.? And probably a couple more items in that vein.*** ? This certainly could help to make things easier. Victoria |
Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBruce,
You said: If these people regularly use the "email me a link to log in" button, then it could happen that they won't be able to log in anymore (you must be logged in to create a password). Sure. But I am talking about people who have been members for quite a while. I suppose they know how to get into the group and know their password. That?s understood. But I am talking about writing emails not receiving them. Relating to the presumption that if they have a yahoo address and do not use it for a year because they stay logged in and just read in the group, all o a sudden yahoo bounces them. At least that?s what I understood the presumption suggests. Victoria |

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "no email" only affects regular group messages. Groups.io will still attempt to deliver Special Notices, bounce probes and any PMs -- sent either via the Directory or the Member List. If such messages are never sent, the account/email address will never go into bouncing status, even if it isn't working. Regards, Bruce P.S.?My own opinion:? If you lose a few lurkers who can't keep their email accounts up and running, you haven't lost much. Re: Can group owner change a members email-address?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBruce, ? we already sent further bounce probes, various ones. And I do suppose just like you, that a message from the menu to the same address might not work either. ? But two questions remain before I start deleting members, and I hope I can express what I mean. ? ? 1.????? We have an enormous library saved in our files (you would call it Wiki, but we prefer to have in the very well organized file system). And we do have a lot of members who do not post but prefer reading online in order to inform themselves. If they have a yahoo address, can they get bounced just because they do not post but prefer to read? Couldn?t it happen to them that they cannot log in any more one day just because they have a yahoo mail adress? ? 2.????? And what about the members who have their subsription set to ¡°no email¡±. Can they receive bouncing emails? ? Victoria ? |
Re: re deleting photos
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI probably should have started a new thread, but since there is more to this situation I¡¯ve talked about on this thread, if anyone would read what the whole thread they would understand more about what I have been experiencing. I¡¯m not trying to delete any pictures in any member albums, but I have been noticing a strange thing that is happening in a few albums. I know about refreshing the browser, and that doesn¡¯t do anything or have anything to do with this situation. It¡¯s still a mystery I¡¯m trying to understand. ? Don |

Yahoo addresses make up about 28% of our membership, but 75% of those listed as bouncing. This must point to something but quite what it points to isn't entirely clear!*** ? o.k. I did this ananalysis now as well. Our Yahoo addresses make up about 40% of our membership. And about 40% of them are bouncing which in our case means the majority of them is not bouncing. ? ? Well, when I opened up my first yahoo group in 2006, many of my members came from other yahoo groups. In those days yahoo groups were the only ones available in Germany with the mailing option and big storage space for documents, database, photos and pdfs. A lot of animal health groups were yahoo groups in those days, and some still are (I myself was a member in at least 10 yahoo groups). If the ¡°lack-of-use¡± theory is applied here, then I suppose that the still valid yahoo addresses in my group also are in use in other yahoo groups, and that?s why they are not bounced.
? I had double e-mail adresses of about 40% of the bounced ones. The explanation for this is simple: In the yahoo groups you could easily use various email adresses. In your supscription sheet you just added a new address and made it valid per click. Another important point is, that yahoo groups had the big advantage to appear in the language of the members? country, in our case in perfect German. As I mentioned many times before, a lot of folks ¨C depending on the part of Germany they come from ¨C do not speak English well enough. When they were moved to groups.io they didn?t have to do a thing. We helped by translating a lot of the English texts for them, and our own descriptions and texts are all in German.. ? Since we are a group dealing with very special animal health issues, the reasons for not being available any more could be very disparate.. In some cases the animals recover, in other cases the animal dies, and in both cases that member maybe closes his or her account without giving notice. Always sad not being updated after having invested time and energy in trying to help them. But that?s something we?ve got used to. ? Nevertheless it would be very helpful to find out for what special reason people are bounced. If I knew they do not want to be bothered, I would just remove them. If they have problems with their yahoo address, I would help them to get back in. But if I cannot reach them¡.. ? Victoria ?

Re: Concerning Databases
Victoria,
I'm still experimenting w/Databases. I learned yesterday that there is a large difference in time required to upload a fairly large database (greater than 450 and growing) between Free groups and Premium/Enterprise groups.?? While that database times out and I have to eventually ask for a login link on my Premium group it loads in less than 2 seconds on one of my free groups. I think that's because the Premium group defaults to Map mode and each map point must be calculated. I plan on writing a support request that for Databases that would include a normal default to List mode and a switch for the owner to select either or both modes as well as the initial default for each database plus a couple more items like an option to define the record index number increment between records and a way to reset the index number.? Re: Amount of time to send emails
Dave,
?
As to the activity in my account, the most recent successful delivery was 3:17 AM (time zone = mine or Groups.io's?), ?
Times displayed on Groups.io web pages are translated to your time zone (as set in your account Preferences page). Unless they're inside a message body or other member-provided content.
?
?
the most recent bounces were July 29 which were marked 'throttled' by Comcast, which sounds like what you mentioned.? ?
Yup. And I believe that if they're showing now as bounces that means they were throttled so long that Groups.io gave up on delivering them.
?
?
It's now an hour and a half and still haven't seen the other email. ?
It may be "throttled" or otherwise deferred at the moment. I don't think Groups.io will update the reporting until the message's fate is determined (accepted, rejected, or deferred past Groups.io's retry limits).
?
?
And Comcast hasn't completly blocked Groups.io, or I wouldn't have gotten the 'message needs approval' emails, would I? ?
Correct. And I think we'd be hearing more complaints about it, or Mark would post something in beta about it (as has happened in the past) -- he watches for general deliverability issues.
