Re: Help: Earthlink now bouncing emails sent to *me* from Groups.io groups I own

Jim,

? ? ? ? ? Thanks for that.? On one of the groups I moderate this afternoon a message came in to the owner from a subscriber using Earthlink.? I pointed the owner to this topic but also copied and pasted your offering for him directly.

? ? ? ? ? ?My final sentences in my e-mail to the owner were:?
Users are going to have to take on a more active role in this, particularly in complaining to their providers about blocking known e-mail list services that can send messages to anyone if and only if they have subscribed to get them.
?
Groups.io needs to be whitelisted and the more customers that complain to their e-mail service providers about this the faster it will happen.?

For the sake of clarity (or maybe not) I consider even having to approve a single message as a member being moderated, until they're not.

I have dealt with services where that was not required and could be set.? Apparently it cannot be here, which is a shame were it to be wanted, which is why I asked.

They are used by the system to either subscribe the email address to the

a pending subscription. The content of the message does not go anywhere.

As Duane mentioned, you can opt to receive a notification when someone
uses the +subscribe email address or uses the Join/Request button on the
group's home page. That checkbox is in the list of Notifications in each
owner/moderator's Subscription page.

You may need to set that in your owner Subscription for the group.? On the Subscription page, scroll down to Notifications and select "Email when there are members needing approval." in order for the emails to be sent to you.

Jim,

"Posts to this group require approval from the moderators..." in which
case neither group accepts members as "immediately accepted and not
moderated."

Did I miss something?
Maybe I did.

I did not interpret Brian's use of the word "moderated" in that context to refer to message moderation. I read it as meaning "immediately accepted as opposed to requiring moderator approval" - referring to the membership itself.

Brian,

Is it possible to set up a group where a subscribe request is just automatically processed and the member is immediately accepted and not moderated?

Yes. Beta and GMF both operate this way.

[]

Shal,

I'm confused. I read the settings you posted (above) as saying that subscriptions to Beta and GMF are immediately accepted, but that "Posts to this group require approval from the moderators..." in which case neither group accepts members as "immediately accepted and not moderated."

Did I miss something?

The response is being diverted because this person is not a subscriber yet.

It's generally best to instruct people replying to the Pending Subscription member notice to send it to the group's +owner address. Alternatively, you can change your group settings to allow non-subscribers to post (see Admin>Settings>Message Policies), in which case the response can be sent to the group posting address but will be moderated.?

Is it possible for a Moderator to resend a pending message and if so, how?

Go to Admin>Members and open the Pending subscriber's record. Scroll to the bottom of the resulting page and click on Send Message. Below the message editor on the resulting page is a pull-down "Notices" menu that you can use to select and resend the notice.

Hope this helps,

This spins off a related question, but since I'm moderating groups all of which require approval I can't answer:
Is it possible to set up a group where a subscribe request is just automatically processed and the member is immediately accepted and not moderated? I'd have to believe there is, and if so, that could be at play here.

I'd say NO. As I understand it the anti-spam settings require that either the subscription request requires approval... or else if approval isn't required then the first X messages will be moderated. No such thing as automatic approval without initial moderation.

Re: Reply vs Reply All

Jim Higgins

I'm the owner of a restricted group that directs replies to the person who originated the message and when I reply via my personal email client the reply is addressed only to the originator of the email.

I suspect some of your subscribers are using email clients that either don't properly observe the "Reply-To:" header or that have been configured to "reply to all" when clicking "reply."

Received from Virginia at 3/2/2019 03:40 AM UTC:

Samuel, this is not about replying from within either the Groups.io or the Yahoo web interfaces but rather from a variety of members' personal email applications. When receiving emails from our old Yahoo group, clicking Reply in a number of email apps sent a message only to the person who originated the message. Now, with messages sent via Groups.io, clicking Reply sends one copy to the originator and one to the group; Reply All sends two copies to the group. Again, this is happening for people running a variety of mail apps on their computers and phones.

This is now also happening to all three of the subscribers on my small (and new to groups.io) list who have earthlink.net email addresses.

Is there something I can tell them to do to fix it on their end short of switching to gmail.com?

thanks,
Gabi

Tell them to visit the link below and follow directions found there. The IP address for Groups.io mail server is 66.175.222.12

They can also complain to Earthlink about non-spam mail from a MAILING LIST SERVICE like Groups.io being blocked. They don't block Yahoo or GoogleGroups, so why Groups.io? The info for doing that can be found here...

I suggest initiating both a live chat and a phone call. If enough do that it will get their attention. They need to point out that Groups.io is a reputable and legitimate subscription mailing list service that requires subscribers to verify their intent to subscribe by verifying their email addresses... after which the messages from various interest groups hosted by Groups.io are solicited and are NOT spam. As Shal said, "Groups.io should be whitelisted as a legit email service."

Having worked the abuse desk for a small local ISP quite some years ago, I'm aghast at the careless blocking practices being employed these days... and Gmail isn't the solution.

Immediately accepted subscriptions are possible, but in that case at least one message must be moderated (in GMF, all messages are moderated).

Never moderated is also possible (Restricted groups), but in that case a Moderator must intervene to approve the subscription (or send an invitation/direct add).?

You must choose one or the other. Recall this recent, lengthy thread:??/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/29791163?

Re: Reply vs Reply All

Samuel,

Those links simply have the wrong names.
They are named according to their intended usage and effect.

I was told that if you send a new message to someone who previously
sent a message to you, and you make the subject line the same, then it
is considered a "reply", ...
Specifically, some group.

If you use those links (or otherwise generate an email to the group) the rules for threading messages into existing topics apply. For these links and other reasons there are rules for what to do (reply or new topic) with messages that don't contain either the In-Reply-To or References header field.

However, I agree with you that it would be nice if Groups.io mails
were formatted in such a way that users have control over whether
their reply goes to the group or the sender.
It is impossible for Groups.io to account for all the various ways different email interfaces may use the fields to decide upon what reply options to present.

Groups.io uses the From, Reply-To and List-Post header fields in fairly conventional ways.

From: contains the posting member's email address (possibly munged).

In groups that set their Reply To option to Sender:
Reply-To: is omitted unless the From is munged, then it has the sender's email.
List-Post: contains the group's posting address

In groups that set their Reply To option to anything else:
Reply-To: contains the group's posting address, the group owner address, or (I'm not sure what in a group set to Group and Sender, probably both addresses).
List-Post: is omitted (due to a bug in Thunderbird, mostly).

Re: Help: Earthlink now bouncing emails sent to *me* from Groups.io groups I own

Virginia,

"You must take action to restore your account, or we will unsubscribe
you from all of the groups you are a member of."
That message shouldn't have been triggered by an outage. The bounce response of Groups.io is complex, mostly because it is designed to be tolerant of temporary delivery problems.

Where it does have a short fuse is explicit rejection of group messages (a "permanent" or 5xy response code from the mailbox provider).

I only got that message today, several days after the Earthlink
outages occurred so at first I didn't put two and two together.
Was that notice dated from the time of the outage, or was it generated more recently?

Looking at your subscription in GMF I see only the successful delivery of a bounce probe. That could be because the messages which bounced came from other groups (mods can only see activity related to their group).

You can get a comprehensive (all groups) view of your Recent Bounces in your Account. That history might provide some illumination, especially if you see Reason codes in the 500-599 (permanent) range.

Those links simply have the wrong names. They should be named "E-mail to group" (or: Compose to group) and "E-mail to sender", but when I posted about this on the beta mailing list, I was told that if you send a new message to someone who previously sent a message to you, and you make the subject line the same, then it is considered a "reply", and so these links will probably not be renamed.

Most of the group members will just click Reply in their mail app out of habit - after all everything else works that way...
FWIW, I find that what happens when you press the Reply button in a mail program can depend on the mailing list -- sometimes Reply All does one thing, sometimes it does something else.

However, I agree with you that it would be nice if Groups.io mails were formatted in such a way that users have control over whether their reply goes to the group or the sender.

Yes.? Beta and GMF both operate this way.

One can tell by looking at a group's Home page, in the group settings:

I'm moderating groups all of which require approval I can't answer:?

If you have access to the group's Settings page, you'll find the Restricted Membership checkbox in the Spam Control section.

They are used by the system to either subscribe the email address to the group, or if the group has Restricted Membership to request approval of a pending subscription. The content of the message does not go anywhere.
