Dealing with lots of @qq spam #question #spam

So a group that I moderate is receiving a lot of @qq spam. Not only are there frequent requests for memberships from @qq addresses that I have to turn down, the Activity log is also becoming useless as it is clogged up with @qq activity. Do other moderators have a similar problem and is there a way to deal with this?

Toby (and Scott):

If you look at?/static/pricing, it is possible to set up group aliases, if you have a Premium or Enterprise group. These establish a symbolic link on the server to forward someone to the actual group. They also have the benefit of holding an alternative group name so someone else doesn't take it.

Once you pay for the upgrade, an Aliases tab will show up under the Admin menu. For my group ias-indy, I have set up aliases of "ias" and "indianaastronomicalsociety." If I post a message to [email protected],?it shows up in my ias-indy group. Similarly, if someone browses to /g/ias?, they are redirected to our home page.

Like you, I'm not entirely sure that this is what Scott was asking about, but it's a real groups.io feature.

Bruce?

I'm not sure what an ad letter is, but I suspect you have a problem with your subscription settings. It sounds like you are somehow receiving calendar reminders but have regular group email delivery turned off.

Try sending a blank email to [email protected]. Of course, replace GROUPNAME with the actual name of your group.

Or if you are logged in, go to your group, click on Subscription on the left-side menu bar, click on Individual Messages on the resulting page, then scroll down and click on Save.

Doing either one of these should set that group's message delivery back to Individual Emails.
?
You can send inquiries like this directly to the owner of your group via [email protected]. The group owner should be able to look at your subscription settings online and help you to troubleshoot any subscription problems.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Exporting details of who voted in a poll

Beth,
Near as I can tell, poll results (who responded) are not in the group data export archives section (mbox file).? Only the initial poll message.
So this would be a good idea to post on the beta forum for a new feature to download the responses in csv/xls format.

To change the email address associated with an account, click on the pull-down menu at the top-right of any page and select Account. On the resulting page, there will be an Account box at the top with your email address pre-populated. Overtype this with your new email address and click the Change Email button.

If you want to establish an alternate email address to post from, scroll further down to the Advanced Settings for Email Aliases and click open that menu. Enter the alternate email address in the box and click on Add Email Alias.?

Note that:

  • These changes apply across all of the groups that you are subscribed to with that account.
  • All group emails will be?received at your primary address. If you want to receive group emails at different addresses you must set up separate accounts.
The latter is necessary to properly confirm that each email address is capable of receiving messages and to properly keep track of message delivery behavior (mainly, whether the account is bouncing).

Your most reliable source of useful information on groups.io is either here in GMF or in the groups.io system help. I am not familiar with the 95033talk group.

Hope this helps,

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Scotty,

You appear to be correct.? The Wiki info is rubbish in this case.? This is how to do it:

1. Select "Account" from the top right after logging in.
2. Select "Login" from the column on the left.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "Advanced Settings For Email Aliases" and click the right arrow at the far right of that line.
4. Enter the e-mail alias in the space below the text, then click the blue "Add Email Alias" button right below it.

I did figure out that it would appear you need to go into "Account" on the drop down menu on the upper right and then to "identity" on the left menu column.? Then it would appear you can edit information for each particular group from within the identity area.? However, I see no way to add a separate "alias" e-mail for any of your groups.

So, does anyone know how you actually can add an alias e-mail to a group?? Or does this not work at all yet?

Re: E-Mail identity for individual groups (alias's)

Scott,
Not sure what you're asking.? The article you reference has to do with adding an alias for a subscriber/member to be able to send?from an email address other than the primary email address for their account.? This has nothing to do with the email address of the group itself (<groupname>@groups.io, for instance).
There is no way that I know of to have an alternate or alias for addressing email to the group.? What would an alias be needed for?
Thanks,
Toby

I'm not aware of any export / download of poll responses so you may have to copy from the displayed pages.

If your Spam Control setting has the Restricted button checked, the Pending Subscription member notice will automatically be sent when someone applies to join the group. It is sent from the +owner address and replies will be returned to that address.

See?/static/help#membernotices?.

Custom fields not needed! Have you set up a Pending Subsciption message to applicants? If not then I suggest that that is the way to go.

What is the recommended way to screen new members?

My group requires a valid veterinary license and I am currently messaging them from the approval queue. To this point I have gotten very few responses and I think legitimate member requests are probably getting stumped with this method.

Is anyone using other methods?

Does Groups.io offer a better way to screen - or allow potential members to provide info upon membership request? A few custom question fields possibly?

Please let me know - Thank you

That would depend on whether they reply online or via an email client.? On the client, it would depend on their own settings.? On my client, I don't automatically quote, so it's the same as online.? That way, my usage is consistent across both displays and makes it easier for me to remember.? As Bruce said, using the 'quote' button is simple and adds one click when online.

The initial message delivery option is set in Default Sub Settings (see Admin>Settings, then click the button at the top of the page). However, there is currently no way to keep a subscriber from changing it, either online or using the email commands.

As far as an editor tool goes, if you train people to click on the quote button in the message editor (bubble to the left of the Formats pull-down on the menu bar), it will give the effect you want.

Of course, there is no way to force people to do that. The example you cited is an extreme one, but everyone has their own preferences on "quoting rules." This topic has been discussed at length here in GMF with no resolution in sight. People have to take ownership of how much (or how little) of the message they quote, whether it is placed at the top or the bottom, etc. This is not a problem that can be addressed by software.

Regards,
Bruce

P.S. You do realize that you have inadvertently hijacked the attachment topic to bring up an unrelated issue? Many people also consider this to be annoying behavior.
