Re: "Comment" field in the application for membership screen
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYou said: ?At some point people need to accept the consequences of their actions or inactions. If they don't respond, they don't get approved.?Jim, quite right. If they don¡¯t follow the original request requiring a list-specific comment required upon membership submission, their request is declined. Having the comments section included in the membership request allows the list mods to help screen out list spammers. This worked very well for us in the past, on Yahoo groups. We also declined email-only membership requests. The process was simple and required less time and effort from our list mods, many whom work full time jobs. This was appreciated.? You said: ?Likewise, if group owners are upset at a 10% response, loosen the requirements for approval, send requests for th emissing info... in short, MANAGE YOUR GROUP. This simply isn't a Gio problem. Right now, we have no way of screening out spammers unless we require a reply email. It is an ¡°all or none¡± proposition, so there is no option to ¡°loosen up¡±. ?So, we either do or do not require a comment. And, We manage our groups very well, running two very large (over 5,00 list members each) and active groups and have done so for over 10 years. ?And, lastly, no one said this is a ¡°problem¡±, that was your adjective. I am simply asking for a feature that was available over on Yahoo Groups. You may not feel this feature is valuable for your groups, which is fine. If the feature were added as I suggested, it would be optional. Your could simply ignore it. Every group has different dynamics and needs. For the purposes of my groups, this feature would be very helpful, and would provide a more streamlined process, versus the current workaround option.? Patty Sliney -- Patty S. |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDonnell,
Could you see my screen shot? If you're dealing with a screen reader or other assistive technologies my apologies, I don't know how to describe using those interfaces.? In any case, that isn't a checkbox, it is a button. The fact that the icon on that button looks like a check mark is meant to convey approval of the message. You are not supposed to be able to "uncheck" it.
Then click the Approve button, not the Approve & Unmoderate button. I wrote:

Patty,
Also, it would be nice to have to force membership requests versusGive it a while here to see if you have a better experience. It is so much easier to gain web access to a Groups.io group (as opposed to the absurd rigamarole that Yahoo Groups became) that you may not experience the same problems. I'd go so far as to say that in Groups.io there is no such thing as an email-only subscription, there are only subscribers who haven't logged in yet. Check the Upgrade page in your group's Admin collection. Can somebody please tell me how to fix this?If capacity is the problem, you'll have to find a way to make room, or Upgrade. Re: "Comment" field in the application for membership screen
Jim,
At some point people need to accept the consequences of their actionsI don't understand the vehemence of your opposition. The request has been made by many group moderators and is in no way out of line. In fact Mark has earlier stated his intent to implement something along these lines that would be considerably more powerful than the equivalent Yahoo Groups feature: This simply isn't a Gio problem. That exact same criticism could be leveled at just about any of Groups.io's more advanced features. Sure, many of these things could be handled manually (e.g. NuM), but they add to the richness of Groups.io's user and moderator experience. On never you click on a link in an group email that says "view/reply online," groups.io automatically opens a response box. You have to remember to click on the "Discard" button to close it or you'll end up with a bunch of these "drafts." Whether to keep or discard requires "mind reading" on Gio's part. The best action is to keep a draft... one reason being that this may me one way people could be setting aside a message for a later response. And in the end, people need to manage this themselves. They should click CANCEL if they don't want to keep a draft of the response they started. Jim H |

This topic has arisen following a post on beta from Patti Sliney, but that is not the best place for a disccusion about it, given that it was under Site Updates. Patti's post included the following: At some point people need to accept the consequences of their actions or inactions. If they don't respond, they don't get approved. Likewise, if group owners are upset at a 10% response, loosen the requirements for approval, send requests for th emissing info... in short, MANAGE YOUR GROUP. This simply isn't a Gio problem. Thanks, Shal. Also, it would be nice to have to force membership requests versus just email only requests. This was such an issue for us over on Yahoo Groups as my lists heavily refer to our lists¡¯ photos, Files, database, etc. sections. I would love to be able to exclude email only memberships requests.?

Files Question
Bob Cook
In my Group, all members are allowed to upload files.? However, members are telling me they cannot upload anything.? So, I went to my Group, cand licked on Files.? I was able to create a new folder.? However, the Upload Files option is grayed out and when I mouse over it the "International N0" symbol appears (circle with a line through it).
Can somebody please tell me how to fix this?? It has worked in the past and I have not changed anything. Thanks, Bob |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDonnell,Thank you. But approve and unmoderate future posts are all checked. I'm not sure what you mean by "checked" - those are big green buttons not checkboxes: If you're seeing something different a screenshot might help us figure out your question. is there something I need to do as owner to click approve without the other checks tagging along. Nothing special. Just click one button or the other. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

That's sort of OK as far as it goes, but it will not capture those whoThere are a number of ways this can be handled. One of which would be to include in the confirmation email (sent after a +subscribe command) a link to a page where the user can provide the requested information. When you select Approve, only that message is approved.? If you are using NuM, that count is decremented by one.? Approve and Unmoderate does exactly that, approves the message and removes moderation for the individual.

Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
This week's change log covers two weeks: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. NEW: Display Owner/Mod badges on group sidebar.Yay! Now when someone writes in with a question that implies that they aren't the group owner when they think they are, I have an easy place for them to look and then tell me. NEW: Added domain/subdomain setup information to the help page. For enterprise groups only. CHANGE: Updated and added sections about our data processing agreementEvidently won't go live until probably Monday: I had not been including updates to the API in the #changelog reports. The API subgroup of beta is not very active. I wonder if we'll start hearing of any interesting apps. Comments about these others are also welcome: CHANGE: Only rate limit messages to members from other members, not Please call out any you find significant.
