You don't have to switch the members individually. Instead you can
change the "Messages-Who can post?" setting to "Moderators Only".
Management > Control Panel > Access Control
?
Another option would be to change the group's Message Moderation setting
to "Moderated". This will only be effective if (most of) the members are
set to "Default Group Policy". In the Manage Members list that shows up
in the Posting column as "Allowed".
Management > Control Panel > Moderation
?
An advantage of using Moderation to halt new posts is that you can use
the "Reject with Reply" function on any pending message, and in your
reply remind the member about the new address. This will undoubtedly
happen at least a few times when email-using members reply to old
messages but forget to change the address.
?
? >??or change the email address.
?
I would not recommend changing the group's email address: that will also
change the web address and may leave some people wondering if the group
simply disbanded. Better to have the Yahoo Group still in place,
sporting a "We've moved" sign.
?
? > Then maybe delete the Yahoo group after a week or so.
?
Again, I don't recommend that because the Yahoo Group can still serve as
a "we've moved" sign for any members who were on vacation or otherwise
didn't get the message. Or prospective members who found the Yahoo Group
by a reference cited somewhere.
?
This may not be big concern with as few as 50 members, especially if
they are well known to you (or at least, know you well enough to have an
email address or other contact info for you).
?
?
I also concur with J's advice to put a link to the new group in the
Yahoo Group's description text as well as the "Group Website" field.
Having links to the new group will improve its search ranking in most
web search engines, if that's important for your group's recruitment of
new members.

Sent from my iPhone I would issue lots of announcements to the members before the move explaining everything, but I would set the yahoo group to announcements-only *immediately* after the transfer is complete. You domt want half the conversations in the old group and half in the new group. Any posts to the yahoo group after the transfer will not be moved over. It's a one-shot deal, unless you ask Mark again later to transfer the straggling conversations.?
That's what I did, and it was very clean and unconfusing.?

I believe Mark asked folks to include a list of what you want transferred in the "go ahead" email. No sense in him taking the time to do it if it isn't needed. Databases can also me copied, though there was a glitch awhile back (Yahoo formatting problem) and I'm not sure if it's been fixed. Last I heard it would require some owner/moderator tweaking after the copy is done. If it were me and I wanted everything, I'd just say that so I wouldn't overlook something. Duane |

Re: Yahoo Groups move process

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Jim,
First, send an invite to [email protected].?
2.? They will accept the
invite.
3.? You will get a notice from yahoo
stating that they have accepted the invite.? At that point, set [email protected] as a moderator
unchecking everything listed for moderators.? They will set that account to
no mail so just leave that setting alone.
Once you have done that send an email to [email protected] letting them know that
you are ready to transfer the group.? Provide to them the address you are
moving from as well as the address you are moving to.
4.? They will transfer all the content from
it's members, files, photos, and message archives to the new group.?
?
As for fixing it to where members cannot post,
could easily set the old group to announcements only but you could easily just
let them keep acting normal in their posts.? Because that conversation will
eventually get moved anyway.
?
I hope that this helps.? Steph
I'm getting ready to move a group from Yahoo to here - how have you handled the transition on the Yahoo side? I don't want people to post to the old site so I'd disable posting privileges for each member (only 50 or so) or change the email address. Then maybe delete the Yahoo group after a week or so. How did everyone handle that, and was there anything else that you did at the transition? Thanks, |

Integration ?
Hello,
I posted this already here earlier but didn't get a reply, so I'm trying again. I'm new to groups.io and am setting up a new group. I was trying the "Integration" with Facebook, but when I paste the URL of the name of the Facebook group, I'm getting an error that this page can't be found. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug in groups.io ? I tried both logging in to .io with username/password and with my Facebook account but that didn't help. Happy Holydays ! Kind regards. Re: Links in Yahoo Groups, do they transfer?
Donald,
Yahoo Groups has a section in groups for links to web sites. DoesA long time ago in beta@, when the subject of having a Links section in Groups.io first came up, I recall Mark saying he preferred the idea of using the wiki, or perhaps the database, to hold them. I did some testing at the time to see how well either of those would work, and the answer then was "not very". The database has since gained a column type for links, so that evaluation is obsolete. Using the wiki gives the author ultimate control over the formatting of the links, any title and descriptive text that goes with them, and how they are organized. But it also gives no standard way of expressing that (no templates as it were), nor any natural hierarchy mechanism akin to folders. It also gives the readers (users) no sorting capability (e.g. alpha, date, author). Using a database table improves some of that, but still leaves out a hierarchy, which might make it awkward for large link collections, absent some kind of selection (filter) mechanism to go with sorting. I'll be interested to hear, from anyone who transfers such a group, just what Mark decided to do with the Links. Shal |

Re: a question regarding the new subscription notices
Hi Steph,
I didn't know if this question would be best on this list or the betaThis is the right list for the question (about how the site as it is works), beta@ is the right list for making a suggestion about how the site might be better. I'm setting the membership notices for a group I created and I wantAs J answered, there's at most one message that goes out automatically to a pending member. That message can be HTML formatted, so one thing you could do is send a shorter message with links to both your form and your group guidelines. Or incorporate a link to the guidelines as part of the form (or vice-versa). Either of those suggestions assumes you have a place where you can publicly host those files. If your group has public archives or a public Wiki then either of those will work. Otherwise you'd have to find hosting for them elsewhere. You can't use the group's Files section for them because there's no provision for allowing a non-member (aka pending member) to access anything in the Files section. A suggestion you might make to beta@ is that the Member Notices list be improved to have a checkbox next to each notice, to control whether that particular notice is sent to members automatically (on the corresponding event). This would allow you to put a checkbox on two or more messages for a given event, and would replace the "default" checkbox that is the current (awkward) way of doing it. As I recall, J once made a related suggestion in beta@, that the Member Notices be handled more like scheduled Files in Y!Groups, such that a single notice text could be sent on more than one event. That type of mechanism might also allow for more than one notice text to be sent for a given event. There's also a suggestion afoot to have an option to automatically send a Fill-in form to a Pending member, and when filled in that form becomes a row in a (special) database table which only the moderators can access. I don't see either of those suggestions in the to-do list on Trello though. Shal |

notices You can have only one default notice of each type, but I don't
think that's really your question. Your question is about having two notices go
out automatically to pending members. That's currently not possible. You have to
put all of the information into one notice.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi everyone,
I didn't know if this question would be best on
this list or the beta testers list so I'm going ahead and putting it here and to
the owner/moderators of the group if I'm putting it in the wrong place, feel
free to message me privately and let me know
?
I'm setting the membership notices for a group I
created and I want my pending membership form and my group guidelines to go out
to pending members.? Can I have both of them set as default notices??
Or does it have to be one or the other?
?
Thanks for the help.?
