a question about the disable editing posts setting
Steph Mathews
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi everyone, in one of my groups that I own here
on Groups.io I saw in the activity log that a member has deleted a message in
the archives and I don't want my members doing that.? This?disable
editing posts check box, does that include disabling members to delete messages
within the archives?? Thanks!? Steph |
Re: Transferring Groups
I just transferred a group of almost 3000 members and 14 years of archives and it was perfect. No work on my part at all.
Each person received a very clear email from Goups.io telling them about the transfer and giving them the option of unsubscribing. About 100 people did. I spot checked to find out why. The ones I checked had moved out of the area and never bothered to unsubscribe. It¡¯s a neighborhood list so if people moved two miles away the list would not be useful to them. The message was an easy way to unsubscribe. Only ONE person has emailed me directly to ask the new address. Amazing. People love the new service. Over the last 13 years we had watched YahooGroups decline in services while increasing ads, insisting that people set up Yahoo email accounts, and requiring phone numbers. I had people subscribe by email so they could avoid setting up an account. That meant we no longer used any of the web-based services. I¡¯m sure that when we get to the point of needing it, I can easily get donations to pay for the enterprise service on Groups.io. Many Thanks J_Catlady, I've spent the last 5 years with 4 different groups in 'Flakey' Yahoo, but without?any provider support I have had to give up on of them all in the end. I've now started up 2 groups using groups.io?for two different clubs I belong to and so far it's been great. Fingers crossed Barry? |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI¡¯ve had two groups on Groups.io for nearly a year now, and we have been operating quite smoothly.?? No-one except us group owners/moderators would ever think it¡¯s still in beta. ??There¡¯s been an occasional wrinkle, but that¡¯s where the WONDERFULNESS starts.???? While we were on Yahoo, everyone just had to work around its defects and lapses because there was an inpregnable wall between us and Yahoo.?? Yahoo doesn¡¯t fundamentally CARE whether every group owner and individual in a group can actually use the tool.??? Mark Fletcher comes at it from the opposite angle;? his view is that the users will see value in ?(and be willing to pay for) being able to find others with similar interests and communicate/collaborate with one another. ????I was quite willing to pay the fee for my groups because my groups have serious business we do together. ? I have a couple of groups on Groups.io. There were migrated from Yahoo Groups in the spring of 2015. All going strong. Someone else can tell you the full answer - for example, I believe that there is an enterprise version coming at some point. And tweaks based on our demands!? Lots of nice things about Groups.io - built in wiki, file, database, polling capabilities. Nice little things to make things easier for moderators (if you wish to have a moderated site.) Love little things like sticky posts, following, integrations, etc. And Mark is very responsive.? Frances |

Re: Switching from yahoo to io
Steph,
Also, I don't really need a lot of the bells and whistles. Is io tooI don't think so. I've been happy running my PTA group on groups.io and probably very few of the members have ever had reason to visit the site. That's about as "email only" a crowd as one might expect to find. That said I am glad to have the message archives there as a place I can point people to for recent announcements, prior meeting minutes and other info. I did read that transferring is easy and that is extremely appealing to meWhen you use the Easy Groups Transfer agent there is nothing the subscribers need to do - they get added to the list and immediately will receive posted messages. Their Yahoo Group membership settings (individual, digest, etc.) get copied as well to minimize the disruption. There's also a tab in your group's Settings page for "Default Sub Settings". This is a place where you can set the default subscription settings for anyone who joins your group. The Email Delivery setting will be superceded by the transfer agent, but the other settings will apply. Shal |
Re: Help topics we need
Frances,
I was wondering whether you or I could just add it to the wiki of thisAny GMF member can contribute to the wiki. Having it in the GMF wiki does mean that owners / moderators would haveNope! GMF's Wiki is open to the public -- anyone can read its pages, wether logged in to Groups.io or not. I envision the pages under Advice to Group Members being written so that any moderator can pass a relevant page link to any of his/her members who may need help. I was also wondering generally about a strategy for writing up such tipsI'm hoping that GMF's wiki becomes a useful and known resource for help that goes beyond what Groups.io has available. That will be a moving target, but that's ok - a primary attribute of wiki pages is that they can be revised easily. Of course, you can do the same thing with your own group's wiki. Even crib information from GMF's wiki and customize it for your group. Shal |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýEmails arrive promptly in so you should not have a problem. Any delays you see here are due to the fact that GMF is a moderated group. Transferring is easy and you ?don't have to use any of the bells and whistles. (As a technical point, there's no such thing as an 'email only' group in nor, as I recall, in Y!G either. Members just set their subscriptions to 'individual emails' and choose not to access the site via the web.) Switching from yahoo to io
Stephanie Lyons-Olsen
I am the admin for a relatively small (120 users) EMAIL only yahoo group for my Bicycle Club. ?Yahoo has been fine except for one situation. Our rides are on Thursdays mornings and the trail master will cancel the ride via the group email on bad weather occasions. ?Obviously timing of the message needs to be immediate and for whatever reason these cancellations (we have had only 3 this year) have arrived in everyone's inbox exactly 30 minutes late. ?We haven't noticed this with other messages that are not time sensitive... so that is strange. ? Anyway, long story short, I am shopping for a potential alternative to yahoo groups since emails coming late defeats one of the very main purposes for our group. ?I want to pick one that is going to be around and hopefully be supported for some time. ?Also, I don't really need a lot of the bells and whistles. ?Is io too much for an email only group? I did read that transferring is easy and that is extremely appealing to me given my user base (they aren't too computer savvy). Thanks in advance for any suggestions and information.? Steph |
Help topics we need
Hi I just had to do a search for editing the subject of a post and especially for making a post a sticky. I had done this before but it was a month or so ago. The key - you have to choose Topic View. ?I wanted to add in a hashtag to a post, unstick one post and make another sticky.?It only takes a few seconds, but the hunt for the right place took much longer! Editing a message You must have permissions to do this - e.g. owner or moderator. In Messages, change to Topic View. An arrow with a drop down menu appears just on the bottom right on the signature and date line. There are links to: Close Topic Edit Subject Make Sticky Start Merge Delete Topic I was wondering whether you or I could just add it to the wiki of this site. Duane did the last edit of a section on "merge".? Having it in the GMF wiki does mean that owners / moderators would have to belong to this group to get this help. I was also wondering generally about a strategy for writing up such tips and making them available. Cheers, Frances |

Re: A tale of the wiki and deleting a subgroup
jeffp,
Hmmm. The difference between GMF and Beta is a bit less than clear tobeta is an official group (founded and run by Mark Fletcher, the founder and developer of Groups.io itself). It is the place to suggest features and improvements to the product during its beta test phase. [email protected] is the email address (not a group) for bug reports and other support requests. GMF and Group_Help are user-to-user help groups, founded and run by Groups.io users. Here we can offer each other advice and opinions based on our experience using Groups.io and managing groups. Absent a support staff for Groups.io Mark has asked that general questions about using Groups.io be directed to user-to-user help groups like those two. /g/beta/message/10525 We can also act as a sounding board to help vet and refine suggestions before suggesting them on beta, and help you decide if something you've encountered is a misunderstanding, a bug, or should be considered as a feature request.
