HEIC is NOT a proprietary format. It is a worldwide standard developed to replace JPG; it provides higher quality images?that are generally smaller than an equivalent JPG. It was first created 10 years ago by the MPEG group, and became a standard in 2015. Apple was the first to support it in 2017,?which is why it has gotten a reputation of being "proprietary", but Apple doesn't own?it,?and anyone can use?it. It is not compatible with older photo editing and storage apps that have not been updated, but is supported by Google, Microsoft, Adobe and many other photo management systems.
