I am afraid this is not the case. I had just a couple of words in bold in the old description, I've edited the description into plain text but the result is the same.
As a guess, I'd say
it's a limited number of characters, including any formatting information.? A
rough test says it's about 400 characters.
My group description shown in the Directory was (with HTML formatting) and still is (plain text) about 183 characters spaces included.
Besides, although I erased all formatting, one word still appears in bold.
