Hello Marina (& All),
Our group is also restricted and we require an Intro Bio of a few sentences for why any new member applicant is interested in our group. That goes a long way towards winnowing out the bogus applications. We have been toying with making our group private but are unsure if that is the best thing to do since it is not revokable.
Likewise though, we have been receiving applications from the Netherlands (NL) and they do not reply to any request for an Intro Bio so we would delete them after a nudge email for the Intro. We noticed that when we deleted one NL applicant another application request is soon sent us in the next few days with a different name and email address but which also IDs from NL.
They just sit there unapproved with these pending memberships each set to receive 'single emails'. We are guessing that they are attempting to harvest email addresses from our members and trying to do so in 'low-key' fashion, so if they're from NL we just delete them right away now. BTW, none of these NL applicants has ever sent us the requested Intro Bio.
