A lot of users are "sleeping" users, i.e. they don't mind being part of the group (and they don't make an effort to unsubscribe) but they may not be sufficiently motivated to take steps to join a new group by their own initiative. This is what makes an invite so useful: it removes two or three steps from the subscription process, and sometimes that is all that is necessary to get people to cross over.
