into each of the email accounts that I used. Those from gmail and aol
did not do anything.
If you didn't receive and respond to the confirmation request then nothing further happens. That's true of all of the email commands, +subscribe included.

Perhaps the requests from Groups.io went into those address' Spam folders. Or, in the case of Gmail's web interface, were diverted to the Social, Promotions or other tabs of the Inbox.
