not only takes you to the message online, but opens the editor for you

I find this annoying, and made a suggestion in beta not to open the
editor unless I ask for it, but the notion never got much traction.

I agree.

Fortunately for me it is only the links in Digests that do that, so I don't get hit with it very often.
