Geoff

Looks like it would have been, had I actually seen your reply at the time! As it is, I wound up just ordering a much less expensive cd copy from overseas, which still woulda been cheaper here. (And which just arrived in the mail today, which caused me to look through my emails again..) Oh well.??

It's too bad the shipping for these vinyl releases is nearly as much as the record itself. These will be great for my radio show, but I'm starting to think I might not actually need a physical copy..?

Following the successful ¡®Slates¡¯ Live! and ¡®Grotesque¡¯ Live! releases, Popstock Records is proud to present Singles Live Vol One 1978¨C81 released 9th May 2025. The album documents a particularly important era in The Fall¡¯s history - it begins with the group that recorded the debut album Live At The Witch Trials and ends with the line-up that made Hex Enduction Hour. In between we get a number of interesting variations on these two seminal iterations. As listeners will hear, what is beyond doubt is that whoever took to the stage on any given night The Fall were always witheringly powerful. The versions of the songs presented here are a wonderful addition the group¡¯s canon.

Frustrated by a lack of recognition, consultation and compensation by some of the labels putting out reissues, live LPs and compilations from the 40-year history of the well-loved post punk group, Paul Hanley, Steve Hanley, Marc Riley and Craig Scanlon devised a plan to shift some of the balance back in favour of former members of the band. They settled on something of a unique solution: to recreate releases they had appeared on but from live recordings taken at a variety of shows. They formed the label Popstock as the vehicle for these releases.

As I'm sure many of you know, David Thomas, the founding member of such essential Cleveland proto-punk/proto-post-punk bands Rocket From The Tombs and Pere Ubu, as well as many solo & collaborative projects over the years, passed away last week in his adopted home in England. The influence and importance of Thomas's work on the underground music scene in Northeast Ohio, as well as around the world, was simply immeasurable. I scarcely have the words to convey how meaningful so much of his music has been in my life and to my own music. So, next best thing, I dedicated this week's entire show to 2 hours of his work. Rest in peace, David -- we will sorely miss you.?

It was well fookin' worth it if you can fookin' stand the fookin' swearing every fookin' five fookin' min-fookin-its. (Which I can, as swearing big and clever.)

I learned that Blindness is "somewhat inspired" by Roots Manuva's Witness The Fitness.

Never caught a live show, but the Ubu set for NPR¡¯s Mountain Stage (a live-audience venue in West Virginia, more accustomed to country acts) was a delight to ¡®ear. Also RFTT reunion set on WFMU was epic (& shd be findable in the WFMU archives).

Oh yes, I've seen Ubu (and the resurrected Rocket from the Tombs, as well as solo DT shows) more times than I can remember. Never saw a bad set from them, in any incarnation. They were definitely at least as good as any other great & unique band one might ever encounter.?

Re: Pa Ubu is dead - long live Pa Ubu!

Very sad news indeed. I just discovered that 7 years ago, ST 37 played what was to be the final Rocket from the Tombs show with him in 2017 at Beerland in Austin. Very lucky to have seen both them and Pa Ubu that weekend.
