The main point John added, from what I recall, is that PR increases turnout. This is absolutely true for federal and provincial elections; I'm not sure whether or not it will prove true for municipal elections. My experience up to this point has been that people don't care much about municipal politics--unfortunately. Will giving them a better electoral system make them care more? I don't know. That's part of the reason I don't want to add this to the form letter--not that John asked me to. I think he was just showing us what he was going to mail.

The other reason is that any other additions will push it onto a second page, and I want a one-page form letter. Anything more than that, and we may be asking too much of people on their way to or from the market.

When it comes to municipal elections, at least in NB, there are no political parties, and that limits your options. Without parties, MMP is out. But ranked ballots are an option, and you CAN make a PR system with them. Not everyone realizes this. They think ranked ballots have to be winner-take-all, because that's what Trudeau meant when he talked about them. He contributed to a lot of confusion--and I wouldn't be surprised if he did it on purpose.

Definitely we'll want name and e-mail address. Maybe a column for: Want to volunteer? Y or N. Address and phone number are optional. I suppose it's good to get them in case we want to do mailings or phonings in the future, but I don't think we're going to want to do that any time soon. Patti, do we need to be concerned that we'll scare people away if we ask for too much info?

I was also thinking we should have a donation jar for postage. After all, postage is a lot more expensive than it used to be, and if we're successful, all those stamps will add up. I have lots of jars of various sizes. I can bring one.

To my mind, that's what the letter already says. First it says to "give municipalities the option" to use ranked ballots. At the end it says, "allow for ranked ballots." It's not as if it says, "replace single-vote ballots with ranked ballots for all municipalities."
