Rabbi Twersky in West Hempstead

Ganz, Elliot

Rabbi Doctor Abraham Twerski, M.D. is coming to West Hempstead!!

We want to alert you to a wonderful and important guest coming to our
community. Rabbi Doctor Abraham Twerski will be at the Young Israel of West
Hempstead (YIWH), Sunday, February 2 at 7 p.m. (630 Hempstead Avenue). Rabbi
Dr. Twerski, is the author of 40 books and an outstanding speaker -
providing both an orthodox, Torah perspective and state-of-the-art medical
and scientific knowledge. He will provide insight and direction for a
growing epidemic of alarming proportions in the orthodox community - namely
substance abuse and chemical dependency. His talk is titled "I'd like to
call for help, but I don't know the number". Following his talk, he will be
available for a question and answer session and a schmooze. Refreshments
will be served. Rabbi Dr. Twerski is an internationally renowned expert on
chemical dependency and is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the
University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine. He is founder and Medical
Director of one of the nation's 12 best drug and alcohol treatment centers.
Given the large numbers of children at risk within our community, this is a
perfect opportunity to become tuned in - our children's lives are at stake.
Many yeshivas are just beginning to realize and accept this as a disease,
and recognize their students at risk.

The disease is often present for years before the symptoms force the parents
to confront the thought that drugs or alcohol may be the source of their
son's problems. The orthodox community is not immune to this disease. Ask
your teen if he or she knows someone who drinks or uses drugs. Chances are
the answer is YES. The disease of drug and alcohol abuse is definitively
here in the New York Orthodox community.

The profits from our evening with Rabbi Dr. Twerski will be used to provide
support for RTA, Returning Teens Academy; a New York State Regents' approved
(and soon to be accredited) alternative Yeshiva with both Judaic and secular
studies, located in Woodmere, New York. It is the only Yeshiva in America
with a full-time therapeutic program, specializing in teens with substance
abuse issues. Under the expert guidance of Rabbi Dov Silver of RTA and Barry
Wilansky, MA, CASAC of Tempo Group, the program has a high success rate for
having students complete high school and go on to study in Israel, go to
college, or successfully enter the job market. It provides a highly
individualized, structured environment that includes psychologists,
psychiatrists, social workers and expert drug rehabilitation counselors.
Parent and family sessions are fully integrated into the program.

Admission is free, refreshments will be served and donations to RTA are
voluntary, but welcomed. Opportunities for sponsorship are still available.
Please call 516 292 7927 or email RTAfundraiser@.... Hope to see you
there!

I have been asked to thank everyone in the community for their
overwhelming support and assistance in light of the fire that
destroyed the home of members of our community earlier today.

items to satisfy the immediate needs of the family involved.
Accordingly, please DO NOT DELIVER ANY ADDITIONAL ITEMS to the
locations indicated in the prior emails. Further, please DO NOT CALL
those involved with the collection of clothing as they have been
overwhelmed with calls. Should the needs or situation change, we

Koby Mandell Foundation Program in Woodsburgh - Monday, February 10 at 8PM

Rabbi Seth Mandell and his wife Sherri established a foundation to help Israeli
families cope with the grief and aftermath resulting from Israeli terrorist
murders. Rabbi Mandell will be joining the members of our community at the home
of Helena and Jay Rubin, 80 Willow Road, Woodsburgh, on Monday evening February
10, 2003. The program will commence at 8:00 PM.

As you will recall, the Mandell's son, Koby, a thirteen-year-old Israeli-
American, was murdered just 100 yards from his home in Tekoah, on May 8th
2001. In response, Seth and Sherri created the Koby Mandell Foundation which
teaches others to use life's tragedies and adversities to live meaningful and
healthy lives.

Their approach has already had a profound impact on families, mothers, teens,
and youngsters, all of whom unfortunately share the common bond of having lost
a family member to terrorism.

The Mandells have implemented several cutting edge programs including Camp Koby
and Yosef, The Mother's Healing Retreat, and a Teen Adventure Program.

This year the Foundation intends to add several additional programs including a
summer camp specifically for those who have been injured during a terrorist
incident.

At a time when we American Jews feel the pain of our Israeli brothers and
sisters, we have the opportunity to respond. Your presence and your generosity
will be deeply appreciated.

We look forward to personally greeting you on February 10. Please let us know
that you will be attending by calling Helena and Jay at (516) 569-7636, or by
emailing Fran Hirmes at fhirmes@....

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Helena and Jay Rubin

Dear Friends,

his way to Davening. Elyashiv's parents never arrived in Chevron for
Shabbos. And Shani's progress in school has regressed since her physical and
emotional trauma in the latest bombing. Every morning as a P'TACH child
faces his fear and anxiety about entering the classroom, his fear is
compounded as he boards the bus to school- will he arrive safely?"

Please join us for a breakfast with Symie Kaminetsky Liff and Miriam Schoen,
