Hello.
Im new to dalton lathes ive used some more modern ones but i recently was given a dalton. It runs well i had to put a new motor on it, make a tool post, live centre ect it came with nothing but a box of gears.??
Im trying to find the best oil for the babbit bearings and wondering if there is a trick to slowing down the oil loss. I have no oil caps and am concerned that they will get damaged?
|
As to spindle lubrications drip feed oil cups work best. ?There adjustable for feed rate. They have a shut off valve so only work when you need them. The ones with a very small tapered thread work best as after removing the original oil tubes the hole in the top bearing cap is just the correct size for the tapered pipe thread?
As to change gears toy should have 15 for the full set.?

Dennis where is the best place to find two of these drip feed oil cups ?? The ones I have come across that I have which are ( Made in the USA ) are to big and need all new gaskets anyhow and some need new glass. The ones I have also found with 1/8" NPT that I bought are made in China and are junk and threw in the garbage.? ?I have not removed my Dalton caps and still oil with a oil can when running my lathe.

I have some antique made in ‘Merica brass cups that don’t work any better than the failed ones I bought in line. One doesn’t work at all, the other doesn’t regulate and just drains away until empty. ?Best thing is maybe take them apart and look for blockages in the ports, ?metal bits, dried oil, etc... damaged threads... ? it’s really a very simple design... ?
These Dalton bearings want the oil to flush out the swarf and dirt, anyway. So mostly, unless dry, I personally don’t care much so long as the oil runs thru.

Mine has two old Gits oilers with a standpipe. I have a pipe
cleaner stuck down the standpipe with the rest wrapped around the
outside to wick oil down to the bearings. I don't fill them too
much as they will wick dry (over the bench) while the lathe is not
in use.

And that's how it is and has been for some time. People talk about no spare parts if bought offshore, I learned early on, "Hey, I've got a machine shop, I may have to make my own parts", and have for 40 years. I have to be content to say "In a perfect world".
