Disappearing calls on bandspread dial

What is the best guess for the cause of the calls on the bandspread dial of Commander disappearing as I tune up or down the band? Insufficient memory or insufficient computer power? I'm running a 3 GHz P4 with 1 Gig of memory (2 x 512MB) on my DXLab computer.

From looking at the Windows Task Manager window, the CPU usage increases rather dramatically when tuning and the memory usage stays fairly constant which probably answers the question for me. :-) Still, I wonder if others with similar computers notice the calls disappear as they tune and reappear when you stop. More to the point, do those of you running duo or quad core Intel computers notice the same thing.

I am running a Intel Core Duo 6600 CPU clocked at 2.4 GHz. I see little to
no increase in Commander's CPU consumption when scrolling a bandspread full
of spotted callsigns, and that scrolling is smooth (i.e. no disappearances).
If you're seeing a big increase, then your CPU is doing the work instead of
your video adapter.

What version of Windows are you running, Ken?

Assuming its XP, please open the Windows Control Panel's System applet,
select its Advanced tab, and click the Performance panel's Settings button.
In the "Performance Options" window,

- on the "Visual Effects" tab, what option is selected?

- on the Advanced tab, what options are selected in the "Processor
Scheduling" and "Memory Usage" panels?

What sort of video adaptor are you using? If you're not certain, run the
Windows Control Panel's Display applet, select the Settings tab, and click
the Advanced button in the lower-right corner. The resulting window is
adaptor-specific, but should at least indicate the manufacturer and model
number.

The frustrating part is that the behavior is intermittent. This morning as I was checking the settings per your request, I could rapidly QSY with no disappearing calls and yet, last evening, if I were to move the dial only slightly they were gone! I've opened a bunch of programs including my virus scanner to load the CPU and it is currently behaving as it should. Occasionally, when I spin the dial, the marker on the Bandspread window doesn't keep up but rather lags behind in updating. The more I think about this, I'm beginning to think that the problem may well be with the video card.

Those settings are reasonable, Ken.

The FX-5700LE is a reasonably powerful video card. It sounds like your system is intermittently entering a mode in which the CPU rather than the video card is doing the pixel management. You might try downloading the latest driver from nVidia.

I downloaded the latest driver for the video card, and it is still misbehaving. Since it was working perfectly this morning when I first started the system and later in the day it started going wrong, it may be heat related. I'll see if I can improve the air circulation a bit and see if that helps. Any other ideas?

If the video card has a fan, make sure its turning when power is applied;
if it doesn't have a fan, consider jury-rigging one. You could also try
freeze spray as a diagnostic, but running with your PC chassis open will
change the air flow...
