Re: free off-site backup

And an external hard drive is easily trashed if it is bumped while in use. Don't ask me how I know.

Recordable DVDs take too much user intervention unless the amount of stuff to be backed up is trivial. I use a Dell (relabeled Sony) 8-tape DDS4 autoloader, bought on eBay for a song. A full backup of every machine on the LAN runs in the early hours of each Sunday morning (typically takes 4 or 5 tapes) and a differential backup of every machine during the early hours of Monday through Saturday (one tape each day). Each tape holds 20GB without data compression; the last lot cost me $3.50 each; I can drop them with reasonable impunity, mail them across country, and store a duplicate set in the safe deposit box at the bank every now and again. 73 Alan NV8A Dave AA6YQ wrote: An on-site external hard drive does not provide protection against |

catastrophic damage from fire, wind, flood, earthquake or volcano; your PC and the external hard drive could both be rendered useless. Burning your data onto DVDs and placing them in your bank's safety deposit box would provide more protection, but doing this frequently and religiously demands discipline. Yes, there is a privacy consideration with respect to online backup services. One should only engage with a reputable company, and only after reviewing their security policies. Both SOS Online Backup and Mozy encrypt the data as part of the upload process. For me, that's good enough for log data, photographs, and the DXLab source code. For financial and other private documents, I have long used PGP to encrypt them for storage on my laptop; only these encrypted versions are backed up online. 73, Dave, AA6YQ -----Original Message-----

While all of these systems are backed up nightly to a server, my data was still vulnerable to a single catastrophe. Unfortunately, "SOS Online Backup" has problems. I just installed all the programs on Windows 7. It is in an administrator
account but not the hiddened administrator. All so far seems to work exceptr QRZ.COM call lookup. HTat no longer works. It does work if you go to Pathfinder to do it but not if you click CBA or Lookup. I think they may have finally enforced direct lookup at QRZ but not sure. Anyhow so faer is so good fpor Windows 7. I did tuoff UAC by turning it to the Never prompt level. I shou;ld have tried installing in a Standard user I suppose just to see. J |

Glad you got it sorted, Phil.

Until the most recent releases of SpotCollector and DXView, the only things you could specify in an override were callsign callsign and DXCC entity. The expansion was required to enable SpotCollector to accurately highlight spot database entries needed for WAZ, Marathon, IOTA, VUCC, WAS, etc. (of these, only WAZ is currently implemented). 73, Dave, AA6YQ --- In dxlab@..., "Phil Cooper" <pcooper@...> wrote:

Dave and the group,
I now have the correct info showing for JD1BMM, after having entered the grid, zone etc. Prior to this, I had never entered any data in the line, other than call and country. I guess maybe it has been sheer coincidence that all other calls have worked OK, but I connect to a DXSpider cluster, which does append grids to most calls, but not all. I tried "local" spots for a few other calls that were in the overrides panel, but didn't have grid, zone etc specified, and they all appeared to work as expected. Among others. I will now complete ALL the boxes when I enter an override! Thanks for the help, as always, and it is appreciated. 73 de Phil GU0SUP --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean.
