Disappearing calls on bandspread dial

What is the best guess for the cause of the calls on the bandspread dial of Commander disappearing as I tune up or down the band? Insufficient memory or insufficient computer power? I'm running a 3 GHz P4 with 1 Gig of memory (2 x 512MB) on my DXLab computer.

From looking at the Windows Task Manager window, the CPU usage increases rather dramatically when tuning and the memory usage stays fairly constant which probably answers the question for me. :-) Still, I wonder if others with similar computers notice the calls disappear as they tune and reappear when you stop. More to the point, do those of you running duo or quad core Intel computers notice the same thing.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that answers it fully. Actually, I think I tried going that route for a while, it turned out to be easier to keep the station log rather than switching logs each time, and then having to switch all the operator information, especially in the online qsl page. After uploading my logs to Brittanys eqsl and such, lotw is a bit harder to cross pollinate, I've relegated to usually export an adif based on op callsign and use the web to upload the adif and other files. Sometimes I go in and change the qsl info, but it's just too much effort and error prone.

I like the idea of having separate windows users and the settings for each, but that doesn't work out too well when three or four of us are chasing dx or a rare country or something like that. We all take a turn making the contact "for the log". What it seems we need is a way to setup multiple logs, with multiple user settings, and a button or tab to switch between them quickly and easily.

The Workspace mechanism supports this, but at present, switching Workspaces requires you to terminate each DXLab application because the only time these applications load their settings is at startup. The next step is to give the Launcher the ability to send a message to any DXLab application that effectively says "reload your settings from the this new Workspace". When implemented, this would mean that switching from workspace A to workspace B would cause DXKeeper to close whatever log was presently open, and open the log specified in the new Workspace. Applying this transformation to all eight DXLab applications is on the list, but its magnitude means it must compete for attention with efforts like improving the MMTTY engine's RTTY decoding and further extending DXKeeper's and SpotCollector's realtime award tracking. My priorities for such major undertakings are based on assessments of the aggregate beneficial effect across the DXLab user community.

If my response to Brian N8WRL doesn't answer your question, Paul, please let me know.

Once you have a separate log for each operator, you'll probably want to populate each with the QSOs now recorded in your "station log" and remove them from you station log, leaving only your QSOs . This can be quickly accomplished by the following procedure:

1. open your station log

2. create a log backup ( Config window, Log tab, Backup button); visit your backup folder with Windows Explorer to be certain that this backup was created

3. filter your "station log" by a station callsign , e.g. STATION_CALLSIGN ='KG7XX'

4. use the "Export QSOs " tab to generate a standard ADIF file (when asked if you want the filter removed before exporting, decline)

5. while depressing the CTRL key, click the Delete button on the Main window's "Log QSOs " tab; this will delete the QSOs you just exported

6. go to step 3 to export and delete QSOs made from the next station callsign

Then you can create a new log for each of the other operators and populate it by importing the appropriate ADIF file created above.

So, there's your definitive answer. I can see why no public
announcement. It's sort of back door. No ability to apply for WAC
directly through LotW but you can use previously accepted DXCC
credits. This makes sense to me as why do all that programming for 6
QSLs for the award. Even the 5 Band WAC only requires 30 QSLs and
there are no 12, 17, 30m endorsements for WAC.

I'm dubious. There's been a ton of pressure on the ARRL to
support more

a press

Hi all,

Larry W6NWS quoted the ARRL site................
"... At the present time credits in the ARRL LogBook of The World
(LoTW)
system cannot be claimed for WAC credit. Applicants who have a
current DXCC
award in the DXCC computer system can apply for WAC by completing
the WAC
application form and sending it to the address noted above, listing
credits
to be claimed on the application form. In this case QSL cards are not
required. ...."

I did find the above statement a little confusing at first, but it
implies
that LoTW credits that are now part of your DXCC claim CAN indeed be
used.

I'm dubious. There's been a ton of pressure on the ARRL to
support more
awards with LotW. If WAC were now supported by LotW, we'd have seen
a press
release. You can configure DXKeeper to "count" LotW confirmations when
generating a WAC progress report; I'm not going to "hardwire" this
untill I
see a press release.

So, I thought I would do a search and see what I came up with. It
took a
while to get the proper SQL function, but I got there in the end.
The confusing bit was having to remember to use both the LoTW QSL
Received
and also the QSL Received functions for all of S and V.
But, after a few goes, I got it right, and found that I do indeed have
enough DXCC credits to claim 5BWAC - all on RTTY.

You can do this by checking the "include LotW confirmations in
VUCC, WAC,
& Maidenhead progress" box at the top of the Config window's Awards
tab
before initiating the WAC progress report.

Another point for those wishing to check whether they have 5BWAC,
you must
also filter the log for each band as well as filtering for QSL's
verified.
I just entered the SQL expression in the ADV boxes, and then changed
the
band after each click of the WAC progress button. Save the resulting
file as
something like WAC-80m and you are away!

You could create a script to generate a WAC progress report for
each
band. The MultiWAS.txt file in DXKeeper's Scripts folder illustrates
the
technique.

My daughter passed her Tech and got her call yesterday!

Congratulations to both of you!

I would like to set up a fresh log for her in dxlab so we can track her
awards, progress, etc, and 'do something' when it starts so we can pick the
log to work in - hers or mine.

You can create an empty new log for Olivia using the "Log file" panel at
the top of Config window's Log tab. If the pathname for your log file shown
in this panel is

C:\Program Files\DXLab Suite\DXKeeper\Logs\N8WRL.mdb

change this to

C:\Program Files\DXLab Suite\DXKeeper\Logs\KJ4OTY.mdb

and then click the Create button. DXKeeper will create an empty new log, and
open it. To switch back to your log, Brian, you'd click the "Log file"
panel's Select button and double-click N8WRL.mdb in the "select existing
log" window.

At minimum, you'll also need to change the default "Station callsign"
(Config window, Defaults tab) whenever you change operators so that the
correct station callsign will be recorded with each QSO. If you don't mind
sharing the rest of the settings, this will be the fastest approach. If
you'd like to maintain separate settings, you could either direct the
Launcher to setup a pair of Workspaces, save your settings to your
Workspace, and then after Olivia establishes her settings save those to her
Workspace. Switching operators would then entail terminating all DXLab
applications except the Launcher, switching workspaces, and then restarting
your DXLab applications. Alternatively, you could create a separate Windows
user for Olivia, and switch Windows users whenever you switch operators.

I spent some quality time searching this group and the docs to no avail. Any
hints?

Now click the X button to clear the QSO Info panel, and then slowly repeat

If you want your RST items initialized to but don't want the QSO's start
time set when you capture a callsign, disable "set QSO start when RST
Rcvd". -

This is my setup. I have "set QSO start when RST Rcvd" unchecked and
"initialize RST items to
default" checked.

Note that if you log a QSO without having clicked the Begin button,
WinWarbler will record the QSO's start and end times as the time at which
you clicked the Log button (or executed the Log macro command).

I just clicked 3A2MD at 2045 and walked away from computer. I came back hit
my log macro F key and then looked in the DXK log file. The Q start time was
2045 and the Q end time was 2050.

Situation: Click on spot or find station in pile up and start entry (enter
call sign) in WW. I then use TAB to see if I should proceed with chasing the
station. The QSO Started At Date/Time appears in red above call sign in WW.

Problem: I don't always get the station for several minutes and when I do,
it is a mad click to hit the BEGIN button and then the F Key to send my
report.

Is there or can there be a <begin> macro that can be placed in a F Key
function to reset the start time of the QSO? I can't find one in the list of
macros.

By default, a QSO's start time is set when you click the Main window's
"QSO Info" panel's Begin button.

On the Config window's Log tab, enabling the "set QSO start when RST
Rcvd" option means that a QSO's start time will be set when you specify its
"RST Rcvd" item, either by typing a report into the Main windows' "Log QSOs"
tab, or by double-clicking a received signal report.

On the Config window's Log tab, there is also an "initialize RST items to
default" option. If you enable this option and have also enabled "set QSO
start when RST Rcvd", then when you type a callsign into the "QSO Info"
window or double-click a decoded callsign

1. the "RST Rcvd" item is initialized to the default

2. the QSO's start time is set (because the "RST Rcvd" was recorded and you
have "set QSO start when RST Rcvd" enabled

If you want your RST items initialized to but don't want the QSO's start
time set when you capture a callsign, disable "set QSO start when RST
Rcvd".

Note that if you log a QSO without having clicked the Begin button,
WinWarbler will record the QSO's start and end times as the time at which
you clicked the Log button (or executed the Log macro command).

I will bet that the group will be glad when today is over :)

purposes of this group. .

Re: JD1BMM curiosity in SC and DXV

If you create a new override for JD1BMM, then when you set the override's DXCC entity to Minami Torishima, SpotCollector or DXView will automatically populate the other components of the override: CQ zone, ITU zone, IOTA tag, and grid square. Its the grid square that SpotCollector uses to compute the heading (bearing, azimuth) from your QTH.

I suspect that you created your JD1BMM override before SpotCollector and DXView were updated to allow the specification of CQ and ITU zones, IOTA tags, and grid squares in overrides. As a result, your JD1BMM override does not specify a grid square, which is why SpotCollector isn't computing a heading for JD1BMM spot database entries.

To fully populate your JD1BMM override, its probably quickest to simply delete it and re-create it.

Tnx Dave.

Could it be extended to PSK also?

The RTTY notch filter used is provided by the MMTTY engine that
WinWarbler utilizes for RTTY operations. The PSKCore engine that
WinWarbler
uses for PSK operations does not provide a notch filter. Providing a notch
filter for PSK operations would require extending PSKCore; this is
technically feasible, but not a priority.

Re: Notch Filter

Ok, thank you Dave. Great program.

You never know until you ask.

Appreciate the quick response, hopefully I
did not bother anyone.

Tnx Dave.

Could it be extended to PSK also?

The RTTY notch filter used is provided by the MMTTY engine that
WinWarbler utilizes for RTTY operations. The PSKCore engine that WinWarbler
uses for PSK operations does not provide a notch filter. Providing a notch
filter for PSK operations would require extending PSKCore; this is
technically feasible, but not a priority.

Re: WAC report

Hi All,

I asked Bill, NC1L, this morning. Here's our exchange:

The WAC application indicates that you can use DXCC account credits. Does that apply to all credits, even those that came from LotW DXCC applications?

Once the credits are in your DXCC account they are OK to use.

So, there's your definitive answer. I can see why no public announcement. It's sort of back door. No ability to apply for WAC directly through LotW but you can use previously accepted DXCC credits. This makes sense to me as why do all that programming for 6 QSLs for the award. Even the 5 Band WAC only requires 30 QSLs and there are no 12, 17, 30m endorsements for WAC.

I'm dubious. There's been a ton of pressure on the ARRL to support more
awards with LotW. If WAC were now supported by LotW, we'd have seen a press
release.

Hi all,

Larry W6NWS quoted the ARRL site................
"... At the present time credits in the ARRL LogBook of The World (LoTW)
system cannot be claimed for WAC credit. Applicants who have a current DXCC
award in the DXCC computer system can apply for WAC by completing the WAC
application form and sending it to the address noted above, listing credits
to be claimed on the application form. In this case QSL cards are not
required. ...."

I did find the above statement a little confusing at first, but it implies
that LoTW credits that are now part of your DXCC claim CAN indeed be used.

I'm dubious. There's been a ton of pressure on the ARRL to support more
awards with LotW. If WAC were now supported by LotW, we'd have seen a press
release. You can configure DXKeeper to "count" LotW confirmations when
generating a WAC progress report; I'm not going to "hardwire" this untill I
see a press release.

So, I thought I would do a search and see what I came up with. It took a
while to get the proper SQL function, but I got there in the end.
The confusing bit was having to remember to use both the LoTW QSL Received
and also the QSL Received functions for all of S and V.
But, after a few goes, I got it right, and found that I do indeed have
enough DXCC credits to claim 5BWAC - all on RTTY.

You can do this by checking the "include LotW confirmations in VUCC, WAC,
& Maidenhead progress" box at the top of the Config window's Awards tab
before initiating the WAC progress report.

Another point for those wishing to check whether they have 5BWAC, you must
also filter the log for each band as well as filtering for QSL's verified.
I just entered the SQL expression in the ADV boxes, and then changed the
band after each click of the WAC progress button. Save the resulting file as
something like WAC-80m and you are away!

You could create a script to generate a WAC progress report for each
band. The MultiWAS.txt file in DXKeeper's Scripts folder illustrates the
technique.

SpotCollector
1.Config
2.Overrides Tab
3.Add Callsign JD1BMM then select in DXCC Entity - Minami Torishima
4.Close Config
All NEW spots from JD1BMM will be as Minami Torishima
If you want update old spots just enter in DXCluster window command
sh/dx jd1bmm 100 and last 100 spots from JD1BMM keep in your database
as M-T.

Hi all,
I've just noticed that whenever a spot for JD1BMM comes through the
cluster, there is NO heading noted.
There is a heading for all other calls I've seen, but not for this particular call.
I opened DXV, and if you enter JD1BMM, then click GO, it does not
show any LAT/LON, SP DX, cont or grid, and no CQ or ITU zone.
I clicked on DXCC, and all the data "appears" to be there.
Also, if you enter JD1OMM (for Ogasawara), then all info appears
correctly, and if you have the DXCC database open, it goes to the JD1-O entry.
BUT...... if you do the same for JD1BMM, it does NOT go to the entry for Minami Torishima.
Is this an oddity? Or is it something I have done??
BTW....... DXK and SC both know I have not worked it.

Re: Complete DX Lab Uninstall for clean re-install?

I totally disagree Ben. If you download and install the Launcher program as suggested in the Installation instructions, then the rest of the applications can be installed from Launcher with a single button click. Uninstalling, is done via Add/Remove programs in the Windows control panel which is exactly the same procedure used by every other installed Windows program.

What creates a mess are people who don't read and follow instructions and start removing files or eliding the registry without having a clue about what they are doing. The same actions would create the same mess no matter what application you consider, "Microsoft Office" for example.

Hi!

This software (DXLab) is not too complicated as such. But somehow the developers
have succeeded to make installing and uninstalling of this program quite a mess. fThere is much to improve in that respect. That is my humble opinion and not blaming anybody. I myself could not create even a simplest software. I just use them.
