The Caldwell Objects

I finally got my copy of Stephen James O'Meara's The Caldwell Objects. I
think those of you that ordered through Sky publishing received yours a few
weeks ago, (I went the cheaper route with amazon.com).

I found two surprises I didn't expect. First our local astro-photographer of
note, (Preston) Scott Justis has about a dozen photo credits in the book.
(Scott is a former BBAA member and is still a member of NAS). And second,
the book contains a short biography of Sir William Herschel by Larry
Mitchell.

Its surprising to me that there is so little information in print about this
most prolific of astronomers (Sir William) and I am pleased to have this bio.
Larry Mitchell, by the way is a rather prolific observer in his own right.
If you own and use Megastar, you may be surprised to find that the MAC
galaxies that populate so many of the charts are "Mitchell Anonymous Catalog"
objects. Larry has also observed all of Herschel's discoveries.

The Caldwell list itself contains many of my (and yours I'll bet) personal
favorites outside of the Messier list. Of the 109 objects, only the first 70
or so are observable from this latitude (and that is all you need to observe
to earn a "Caldwell certificate" from the Astronomical League). If you are
looking for a "list" to work on after the Messier list, this would be a great
choice. And even if you are not, you might still enjoy this book. And I can
promise you plenty of cloudy nights in which to read it.

Sounds like the story of the season. I actually had a few hours of mostly
clear sky last evening, although nothing like the day seemed to promise.
When I got home from work there wasn't a hint of cloud anywhere and the sky
was that deep clear blue that usually means a great night was brewing. But
by the time I finished dinner, there were scattered clouds and the night was
already deteriorating.

I suppose if it were always clear dark and dry we just wouldn't appreciate it
much.

Photon snack

nightsky20f5 <[email protected]>

Last night the clouds left and then they came back! Then they went
away then back again.....

Was able to catch a few photons just enough to make you want more.

Set up again this afternoon and got ready for the cold... Have gotten
just enough photons to hold me for a night or two. Orion was the best
I have ever seen it! Greens, hints of pinks and even the horse head
paid me a vist. Awwwwe thats better!!!! Now to get ready for work
tomorrow D-- D--..

Eclipse Cruise Report

Hey, Kent Blaackwell and Bob Hitt,

I was disappointed not to see any mention of your names in your friend David Levy's article on the solar eclipse in the latest Sky?& Telescope magazine!? It was a good article nonetheless, and mentioned some other bright astronomy lights, like Owen Gingerich and Stephen James O'Meara.? I just wish our own Kent and Bob had been included.?

I think I'll do the backyard. I'll set the alarm to get up early tomorrow too. My boss is out this week, so I can get away with walking around all day with a glazed look on my face.

Battery

I noticed in the Target sale flyer in Sunday's paper that they have
their 19AH jump start battery on sale for $35.

I have two of them, and they're great for powering GOTO scopes, dew
heaters, etc.

Re: clear sky

I was pretty well socked in here in the southern part of the beach. A few sucker holes now and again, Saturn broke through for a bit, but not worth staying up with a 5 a.m. alarm clock looming. Kelly, did you get any observing in? Its been so long since the 18 saw the sky, I'm not sure I remember where I store it.

Mickey,

Have you seen the review of both the ETX 60 & 70 in the February
2003 p.72
of Astronomy magazine? It was a good review. I think it's a really
neat
scope for the money. Yes, there is chromatic aberrations because
it is,
after all, a short focal length refractor.

Beware of all those deep-sky objects logged in its database. You
can even
link it to a database with 10,000 objects. Believe me, you won't
know they
are there even if the object is centered in the eyepiece. 60mm or
70mm is
simply too small for serious deep sky work but on the planets,
moon and
brighter objects it's a pretty cool scope.

I hope you get it working. Speaking of "working in manual mode",
as you say,
I highly recommend the Edmund Astroscan. The price has been
reduced by 1/2.
In my opinion it's almost as useful to a beginner or advanced
amateur as a
pair of binoculars. Check it out:
