Hahaha! This is one of those mashups where I'm gonna hear phantom
pieces of those extra parts every time I play the song from now on.

Great job man!

Hey all,

Long time between contributions from me, but I’ve been spending most of my music time practicing and studying theory, trying to hone the old skills.

Anyhow, below is a link to a new piece I’m working on.

Any feedback good or bad would be appreciated, especially in regards to getting the piano to stand out, perhaps be a bit brighter.

I suck at mixing, but I feel this piece has some feeling to it, so I’d like to flesh it out as best I can.

Here ya go:

Very cool sound design on this one man.
I didn't notice the artifacts, but I don't have the most nuanced ear myself. Sounded clean to me.
Anything in particular you learned about the grid doing this one?

Hi,

Here's a silly submission to get the ball rolling. It's something I did to familiarize myself with the grid in Reaper.

My GF coriographed the tap-dancing section, I just pushed the buttons.

There are a few artifacts in the vocal because my sound card was acting up for some weird reason.

Here it is:

Che thank you.

I agree, however, I try to stick to the client produced files that was sent to me. I only did small changes to give the song more bounce. If I have to add more drums and instruments etc, I am going into the land of producing. This work was suppose to be a mix and mastering situation. However, it end up becoming editing as well. Lol hahah

Hi Autery,

Definitely a massive improvement you made to that piece , nice job.

To me, it is begging to have some non synth horns added in there to fill the sound out, but that is all personal preference.

Interested to see what others think.

Welcome new members and a note about posting

开云体育

Hey gang,

We have a few new members to the list, welcome all.

Just a reminder, feel free to post anything here you like as far as music or sound design.

?This list is for people to get their stuff out there, let others hear it and discuss and ask questions.

We haven’t had many submissions lately, I think maybe people are a bit shy about posting their own pieces, but no need to hide out, get your stuff out there and let others provide some feedback so you can see what does and doesn’t work, and what folks are responding to.

I’ll be posting some new stuff of my own this week which is a work in progress.

Have fun,

Che

Feedback on cymbals

开云体育

Hey gang,

Working on a new piece, and I like where it’s headed, but I’m trying to integrate some cymbals, and they sound like ass.

What is the issue here? I can’t put my finger on it, can’t tell if I need to work on reverb, or a different instrument maybe or what. Maybe I’ve just listened to this piece too many times in a row.

Take a listen and let me know what you think, it is only like a minute long:

Thanks,

Che

Wizard of Oz trailer

开云体育

Hey all,

Below is a link to a project I assigned myself to create a modern trailer for The Wizard of Oz.

The only thing I sampled for this was the dialogue from the movie, the rest I created, except for the opening melody, which is obviously Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

For those interested, I used UVI’s Orchestral Suite for the symphonic instruments, and recorded my Strat through my Roland practice amp with distortion turned up for the ending power chords.

It still needs some tweaking, I’m still trying to learn how to mix and master, but I think it is not horrible.

Any feedback greatly appreciated, especially on how to make it sound better on cheap speakers.

I think doing projects like this is the best way to learn Reaper personally. I’m striving to make each piece I submit better than the last.

Here ya go:

New track needs mixing

开云体育

Booga booga!

I have posted this on the RWP list as well, sorry for the redundancy, but posting here in case anyone wants to get into more detailed breakdowns of blind artist’s submissions.

As I’m learning the ins and outs of Reaper, I’ve been creating tracks with various elements so I can get a solid understanding of Reaper overall.

Any feedback on the track I’ve linked to here would be appreciated.

Also, what I would like to do with the track below is have someone that is experienced with mixing to take my stems and do a mix for a reasonable price, so I can learn from what they did and ask questions of their choices and process.

If anyone is interested in doing a mix, feel free to respond here or email me off list if you like at:

blindAdrenaline@...

?

As it stands, I have done a very minimal mix on this, as I don’t really know jack about mixing at this point.

Here ya go, thanks in advance for any constructive criticism:

Re: SwashBuckling take 2

well, it went along just fine until . . . the ending when the drummer got ahead by quite a bit, listen and see what I mean, the drummer down beats without the woodwinds sounds, or a bit b4 them. :)

I like it more though now, is less rhythmically distracting if you know what I mean.

Ok, here is a revision of the last piece I sent.

It is somewhat better on the timings, and I think I’m starting to figure out a bit better how to quantize, but the strings are still a little wobbley.

I adjusted and added somethings, and personally I think overall it sounds better and more cohesive than before.

Anyhow, any feedback appreciated, it is only one minute 48 seconds.

Thanks yall.

Re: Short orchestral piece

Hey Curtis,
Yeah man, I definitely have some off beat issues in there, and I'm having to go into MIDI editor and get them fixed.
For some reason, I'm not getting the quantize to work for me, not sure what I am doing wrong. I know it should be a fairly simple process, but unless I am quantizing the whole notes in a measure, it is screwing things up worse for me.
I was waiting to fix all the timing issues until I got a basic template for instruments and melody down, as fixing timing in MIDI editor is time consuming, even when I am doing one item and then mostly looping it.
I'll be posting the revision when it is ready, thanks for the feedback man.

my issue with this is that the drum down beats are not in sync with the orchestral sounds consistently, sometimes they are and it's effective what you wish and then, when they aren't, since I find that distracting to what you wish as a musician, then I am drawn to the time issue. :)

I reckon Juan's comments on RWP about the arrangement are spot on, so
won't attempt to expound upon those, but there's something nerdier

quantize yet? I should say going into this that I'm not one of these
people who quantizes by default, and in many instances where I do use
it, I'll either humanize to a small percentage afterward or manually
reintroduce some imperfections, but I reckon most of these lines
(particularly any instrument with harder attack) could benefit from a
touch of tidying. You could perhaps try quanitizing then humanizing to
something like 5% as a starting point to see if you prefer it.

Both operations are undoable if it turns out I'm full of shit :)

So after weeks of working with it in my off time, I finally felt I
had enough experience with Reaper to try my hand at an actual
project. I am going to be submitting this to the Audio Wizards

I still need to tweak some timings, and I don't know crap about how
to properly mix and master, so I just have some minor panning and
volume control going on for separation currently, but as far as the
feel of the piece, it is basically finished.

Re: Short orchestral piece

Thanks Scott,
This isn't my normal style of music, so I'm having to wrap my mind around a lot of new concepts, which is a good thing.
Yeah, I don't know what my stupidity is with quantizing, or what I am missing, but unless I am quantizing a simple 4/4 on the beat, it seems to destroy what I'm doing, putting notes in weird places and shit.
For instance, on my conga track, it felt like when I recorded and played it back live, I was very close to the quarter notes, but when I quantized it to 1/8, it just put notes all over the place seemingly, and I had to go in and slide things around in the MIDI editor.

I know it is supposed to kind of look for nearby notes to whatever time signature you have and lock them to the grid, at least I think that is how it works. But I've had to use the MIDI editor to go in and move notes manually to get what I want.
The way I've been doing it is check my quantize settings by hitting applications key on the track, going to quantize etc. and making sure it is set to 1/8 or whatever. Then I either check the quantize button, or hit control shift q on the items. At this point, I don't screw with any of the other settings.
I know many of my timings are off currently, and it would seem quantizing would be an easy solution, but it must be a silent propeller, cause I am missing the boat.
The propeller line seems slightly clever, but I have been up for 36 straight hours, so apologies if I am rambling.
Thanks again for the feedback man,
Che
