Richmond Art Center's Spring Exhibitions
Here Is the Sea, Faces Without Noses, 54th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show, Siempre Estar¨¦ A Tu Lado, and Richmond Creates Announcing Richmond Art Center's Spring Exhibitions View this email in your browser [Richmond, CA] ¨C March 5, 2019 ¨C The Richmond Art Center will present five new exhibitions: Here is the Sea, Faces Without Noses, 54th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show, Siempre Estar¨¦ A Tu Lado (I¡¯ll always be by your side), and Richmond Creates: The 7th Annual Art in the Community Show. -- Here is the Sea Main Gallery Exhibition Dates: March 26 - May 17, 2019 Reception: Saturday, March 23, 5:00 -7:00 pm Here is the Sea brings together artworks that use the ocean and its coasts as a site for investigating the fraught relationship between humans and nature. Richmond is a city with thirty-two miles of shoreline, and through this exhibition visitors to the Richmond Art Center are invited to reflect on what is at stake and what has already been lost in our local maritime environment. The exhibition will present a range of environmental work, from political pieces with critical messages for social action, to works exploring more subtle, personal impulses that shape our relationship to water. Works by Stephen Bruce, Christy Chan, Tanja Geis, Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang, Love the Bulb - Bulbfest Performers, Jos Sances, and Dimitra Skandali emphasize local maritime environments, such as the Richmond mudflats, the former San Pablo whaling station, Point Reyes' coast line and the pacific ocean. Through raising awareness of ecological problems in relation to local maritime environments, Here is the Sea will highlight the connections between local and global events. Jos Sances, Or, the Whale (detail), 2018-19. Courtesy of the Artist. Photo by John Wehrle -- Faces Without Noses South Gallery Exhibition Dates: March 26 - May 17, 2019 Reception: Saturday, March 23, 5:00 - 7:00 pm For over fifty years, Emeryville artist M. Louise Stanley¡¯s large scale paintings have roamed across themes of classical myths, feminism, art history, travel and current politics. An anchor for Stanley¡¯s formidable creative output is her sketchbooks. As she says, ¡°Sketchbooks are a major part of my process, they define my compulsions!¡± Faces Without Noses presents a survey of Stanley¡¯s sketchbooks, capturing the skill of her draftsmanship and including her most quintessential subjects. The sketchbooks are accompanied by a selection of Stanley¡¯s paintings demonstrating the development of her ideas from sketchbook to canvas. In George Eliot¡¯s Romola, Eliot describes an old Florentine collector during the Italian Renaissance who purchased many "disinterred busts of ancient immortals - some perhaps, truncis naribus; wanting as to the nose, but not the less authentic.¡± As a title for this exhibition truncis naribus, translated from Latin to Faces Without Noses, represents overarching questions of authenticity and authorship that thread themselves through Stanley¡¯s work. What is Stanley¡¯s relationship with dead artists whose work she obsessively studies, translates and even copies? How do her sketchbooks work to capture great ideas from art history while at the same time launch new ones? M. Louise Stanley, Truncis naribus, airplane back home, June 9, 1994 (sketchbook page), 1994. Courtesy of the Artist -- 54th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show Community and West Galleries Exhibition Dates: March 26 - April 24, 2019 Reception: Tuesday, April 16, 5:00 - 7:00 pm Every spring the Richmond Art Center partners with the West Contra Costa Unified School District to present the annual WCCUSD Student Art Show. The Richmond Art Center and WCCUSD share an ongoing vision that art education is a crucial component of a thriving and productive society. The West Contra Costa Unified School District generously sponsors this annual student exhibition. Participating Schools: De Anza High School, El Cerrito High School, Fred T.

Since the successful 2017 Bay Area events, Sharon Katz and The Peace Train team have partnered with organizations in both San Diego and Tijuana and have been conducting ongoing cross-border workshops and concerts. Here is a link to the video of this event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lWURElYyww The work continues. We believe deeply in the power and importance of these events, now more than ever. On April 27 at 7:30 PM, the public is invited to a special evening at Park Day School, 360 42nd Street, Oakland. In addition to performances and a short film, there will be a conversation about the Bay Area's involvement in The Peace Train¡¯s 2020 Transcending Barriers journey from the USA to Tijuana, Mexico. Visit Berkeley: In the News
The art community might be interested in understanding what Visit Berkeley does as well as thinking about how they might take advantage of this more. BERKELEY IN THE NEWS WINTER 2019 Berkeley's late 2018 media wave is rolling into '19 with splashy press and posts in national & international travel and lifestyle magazines, websites, and fast-growing social media audiences. By the numbers, Visit Berkeley tallied 49.8 million impressions (print circulation, website UVMs, broadcast audience) with an advertising value of over $580,000. Select coverage highlights are displayed below. Interested in working with Visit Berkeley as we tour travel media? Please contact us! Western Living (CA) Dials in to Berkeley Time Western Living is a glossy magazine for an affluent audience of 145,000 Western Canadians (many consider it Canada's Sunset Magazine). The writer, John Burns, was toured by Visit Berkeley and partners Graduate Berkeley and the Berkeley City Club. The "Berkeley Getaway Guide" piece captures Berkeley's energy and vibe in Western Living's go-to hotel and destination feature. Smarter Travel Spotlights Berkeley in Two Features The award-winning Smarter Travel website featured Berkeley in a pair of recent stories. "9 Unforgettable Things to Do in Berkeley, Calif." by executive editor Christine Sarkis explored diverse corners of the city from a local's perspective. And "The 10 Best U.S. Cities to Visit in 2019" by Jamie Ditaranto included Berkeley (the only California destination to make the list). SheKnows (and loves) Berkeley Boutique Hotels Freelance writer Amelia Edelman visited Berkeley over a whirlwind autumn weekend with highly engaging results. Edelman's SheKnows story on family friendly boutique hotels featured two Berkeley properties: the Hotel Shattuck Plaza and the Berkeley City Club. SheKnows' audience of (mostly) millennial moms totals an impressive 790,000 UVMs; a Berkeley City Guide is in the pipeline for 2019. USA Today 10Best Covers Berkeley's Quirky and Sophisticated Sides Independent travel writer Lois Alter Mark spent a memorable weekend in Berkeley that resulted in two stories in USA Today's 10Best series. The Sophisticated post took a Chez Panisse/ BAMPFA course; the Quirky version visited lesser-known points of interest like the Fairy Post Office and Aftel Archive of Curious Scents. Both sent scores of web visitors to Visit Berkeley and partner sites. Germany's Abenteuer und Reisen Hearts Berkeley Working with Visit California, Visit Berkeley hosted a delegation of German travel writers with wunderbar coverage results now coming in! Leading things off is "San Francisco and Beyond," a multi-page feature story in Germany's leading travel magazine Abenteuer und Reisen (Adventure and Travel), slated for March 2019 -- just in time for distribution at ITB Berlin, the world's largest tourism expo. New York Times' Frugal Traveler Gets Berkeley into the Budget The New York Times' Frugal Traveler column put the spotlight on Berkeley in a July article that garnered enormous attention locally and beyond. The story touched on virtually every business district in the city in addition to UC Berkeley and Tilden Regional Park. Berkeley spirit runs strongly throughout the well-researched piece.
