"Paul was an incredible creative spirit and always kept stretching. As deep as he would go into the roots, he was always pushing the envelope of what blues can be." - Bonnie Raitt Paul learned the blues from the original black masters performing nightly in his own back yard. Muddy Waters was Paul's mentor and lifelong friend, happy to share his wisdom and expertise with such a gifted young acolyte. The interracial Paul Butterfield Blues Band, featuring the twin guitar sound of Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, the rhythm section of Sam Lay and Jerome Arnold and the keyboards of Mark Naftalin, added a rock edge to the Chicago blues, bringing an authenticity to its sound that struck a chord with the vast white rock audience and rejuvenated worldwide interest in the blues. The band's first LP, released in 1965, was named "#11 Blues Album of All Time" by Downbeat. Through his music and words, along with first©\hand accounts of his family, his band mates and those closest to him, Horn From The Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story tells the complex story of a man many call the greatest blues harmonica player of all time. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Paul Butterfield is one of a handful of musicians inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Blues Halls of Fame, alongside other legendary artists including B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Billie Holiday and Eric Clapton. CA for the Arts: Submit Your Arts Impact Story and Register for Arts, Culture & Creativity Month Today!
February News from your statewide arts advocacy organization Brought to you by Californians for the Arts and California Arts Advocates. ?Click image above for more info February 12, 2019 Dear Friends, What an exciting time to be an arts advocate in California! Over the last 2 months we¡¯ve been touring the state and meeting with arts leaders to discuss what the state of arts advocacy is in California. We can tell you it is strong and we are feeling so optimistic and energized to lead the statewide movement. It was only 5 years ago that funding was at historic lows, hovering around $1 million for 10 years. In the last 5 years we¡¯ve seen over 800% growth in the state budget for the arts and although this is a tremendous increase we are still not where we need to be to see arts accessible for every Californian. With our new Governor showing early support for public funding for the arts, it¡¯s our job to continue to press our representatives to increase permanent funding and to value arts, culture and creativity as transformational, impactful and just as worthy as any other social service providing solutions to our communities. Just recently, Executive Director Julie Baker ran into Governor Newsom on a Southwest flight from LA to Sacramento. She had the opportunity to introduce herself and thank him for the $10 million in permanent funding for the California Arts Council he has allocated in his first budget. Gov. Newsom smiled and said, "But we still need to do more." Stunned and smiling in agreement, he continued to encourage Ms. Baker, "Keep lobbying me, it works." At that point, she had to thank the Governor for validating her job, but in all seriousness, Gov. Newsom has opened the door and invited us to come in and build our case. So now it is up to all of us to show up, to advocate, to go from arts supporters to arts activists and build California as the leading state of creativity. In listening to his State of the State address there was no mention of the creativity economy so we need to make sure our voices are heard. ?How can you help? Register today for Arts, Culture and Creativity Advocacy Day in Sacramento on April 23 where we will connect, educate and mobilize our efforts. Can¡¯t make it to the Capitol that day? Join us throughout the month of April by partnering with ACCM, or host an event in your own community and download our ¡°Ways to Engage¡± guide. We want to hear your ARTS IMPACT STORY. How has access to public funding helped an arts program, artist or organization to make a difference in your community? How can the arts create a meaningful outcome on some of our state¡¯s most pressing issues? Here are just some suggested Arts Impact categories: Early Childhood Education / Arts Education Student retention / graduation rates Corrections and re-entry programs Arts & Accessibility Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Neighborhood Revitalization Affordable Housing Mental Health Health / Well being Cultural Heritage Homelessness Veterans Public Art Climate crisis Cultural Districts Feel free to send in more ideas! Submit your narrative, a link to an article or blog post, a work of art or a video illustrating your arts impact and help us build our case. We will share these on social media and in our public awareness campaign throughout the month of April. We look forward to showcasing stand out examples as we take to Sacramento, our state¡¯s capital, on April 23rd for Arts, Culture and Creative Advocacy Day. We¡¯ve always been told when you need to solve a problem, think outside the box and come up with a creative solution. Artists and cultural workers have always done just that. Now is our time to have a seat at the table and to be recognized for our contributions. As Shirley Chisholm said, ¡°If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.¡± Julie Baker, CFTA ED Gets Around! Visit Berkeley: In the News
The art community might be interested in understanding what Visit Berkeley does as well as thinking about how they might take advantage of this more. BERKELEY IN THE NEWS WINTER 2019 Berkeley's late 2018 media wave is rolling into '19 with splashy press and posts in national & international travel and lifestyle magazines, websites, and fast-growing social media audiences. By the numbers, Visit Berkeley tallied 49.8 million impressions (print circulation, website UVMs, broadcast audience) with an advertising value of over $580,000. Select coverage highlights are displayed below. Interested in working with Visit Berkeley as we tour travel media? Please contact us! Western Living (CA) Dials in to Berkeley Time Western Living is a glossy magazine for an affluent audience of 145,000 Western Canadians (many consider it Canada's Sunset Magazine). The writer, John Burns, was toured by Visit Berkeley and partners Graduate Berkeley and the Berkeley City Club. The "Berkeley Getaway Guide" piece captures Berkeley's energy and vibe in Western Living's go-to hotel and destination feature. Smarter Travel Spotlights Berkeley in Two Features The award-winning Smarter Travel website featured Berkeley in a pair of recent stories. "9 Unforgettable Things to Do in Berkeley, Calif." by executive editor Christine Sarkis explored diverse corners of the city from a local's perspective. And "The 10 Best U.S. Cities to Visit in 2019" by Jamie Ditaranto included Berkeley (the only California destination to make the list). SheKnows (and loves) Berkeley Boutique Hotels Freelance writer Amelia Edelman visited Berkeley over a whirlwind autumn weekend with highly engaging results. Edelman's SheKnows story on family friendly boutique hotels featured two Berkeley properties: the Hotel Shattuck Plaza and the Berkeley City Club. SheKnows' audience of (mostly) millennial moms totals an impressive 790,000 UVMs; a Berkeley City Guide is in the pipeline for 2019. USA Today 10Best Covers Berkeley's Quirky and Sophisticated Sides Independent travel writer Lois Alter Mark spent a memorable weekend in Berkeley that resulted in two stories in USA Today's 10Best series. The Sophisticated post took a Chez Panisse/ BAMPFA course; the Quirky version visited lesser-known points of interest like the Fairy Post Office and Aftel Archive of Curious Scents. Both sent scores of web visitors to Visit Berkeley and partner sites. Germany's Abenteuer und Reisen Hearts Berkeley Working with Visit California, Visit Berkeley hosted a delegation of German travel writers with wunderbar coverage results now coming in! Leading things off is "San Francisco and Beyond," a multi-page feature story in Germany's leading travel magazine Abenteuer und Reisen (Adventure and Travel), slated for March 2019 -- just in time for distribution at ITB Berlin, the world's largest tourism expo. New York Times' Frugal Traveler Gets Berkeley into the Budget The New York Times' Frugal Traveler column put the spotlight on Berkeley in a July article that garnered enormous attention locally and beyond. The story touched on virtually every business district in the city in addition to UC Berkeley and Tilden Regional Park. Berkeley spirit runs strongly throughout the well-researched piece. Minneapolis Star Tribune: Talkin' Berkeley Revolution Minnesota's largest circulated daily newspaper, the Star Tribune featured a Sunday Travel section cover story on Berkeley written by Donna Long. Ms. Long's travel was coordinated by Visit Berkeley and included time in the Telegraph Avenue and North Shattuck / Gourmet Ghetto districts. The 550,000 print circulation of the paper was complemented by a web post with another 260,975 UVMs. Good Grades for Berkeley in National Magazine Curve The nation's best-selling lesbian magazine, Curve featured a sensational write-up on Berkeley in its Winter 2019 issue. Curve editor-in-chief Merryn Johns' "Beautiful Berkeley" piece covered three full magazine pages with nice shout outs to the Hotel Shattuck Plaza, Berkeley City Club, BAMPFA, Chez Panisse, and Donato & Co. as it focused on trav
