Berkeley Historical Society: Building Bridges, Not Walls: Berkeley, America's First Sanctuary City
VIEW THIS EMAIL IN YOUR BROWSER HISTORY EXHIBIT Building Bridges, Not Walls: Berkeley, America's First Sanctuary City November 11, 2018 - March 23, 2019 1971 poster, coinciding with Berkeley's first Sanctuary City resolution, by Doug Lawler / East Bay Media The public is invited to the opening event for a new exhibit at the Berkeley History Center this Sunday, November 11. [Note: Both the timing of the event and the closing date have changed since initial publicity went out.] About the event: November 11, 2018, is the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day ¨C the end of World War I. At 11:11 AM, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arregu¨ªn will hold a ceremony on the steps of the Veterans Memorial Building for the World War I memorial plaque, newly restored. Immediately following, there will be a presentation in the building's auditorium hosted by the Berkeley Historical Society. The program will include City Councilmember Linda Maio speaking on her experiences with Sanctuary City movements in Berkeley. In addition, representatives from the Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission and Code Pink will speak about one Sanctuary City moment: a 2011 resolution that the Guantanamo prison should be closed and the welcome of one of the refugees to the Berkeley community with an event known as ¡°From Guantanamo to Berkeley.¡± Exhibit curators Phyllis Gale and Harvey Smith will then present introductions to the subject matter of the new exhibit. The exhibit will be opened for viewing for approximately one hour, with light refreshments served in the lobby. Following this event, people may wish to attend the United Against Hate Week kickoff across the street in Civic Center Park, scheduled from 1 to 4 PM. The Center Street Parking Garage, a block from the Veterans Building, has just reopened. Parking is $3 per hour. You may also find free parking behind Old City Hall or on the streets west of Martin Luther King Jr. Way. About the exhibit: The new Berkeley Historical Society exhibit will explore Berkeley¡¯s humanitarian spirit and internationalism. Berkeley became the first sanctuary city in the United States at the end of the City Council Meeting of November 7, 1971, when Resolution #44,784 was signed, providing sanctuary for Naval seamen of the USS Coral Sea who were opposed to the Vietnam War. The exhibit will also explore nine more City resolutions passed since that time in areas such as sanctuary for Central American refugees (1985), acceptance of Arab immigrants (1991), a Hate Free Zone (2001), opposition to the Patriot Act (2002), reaffirming Berkeley as a City of Refuge (2007), and finally last February, when Berkeley became a sanctuary city for cannabis. One part of the exhibit is selections from ¡°Building Bridges, Not Walls: Immigrants, Diversity and Internationalism,¡± curated last year by Berkeley Historical Society member Harvey Smith, originally for the San Francisco Public Library and the Canessa Gallery. It celebrated San Francisco Bay Area immigrants and children of immigrants and the roles they played in the building of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and the region¡¯s internationalist outlook culminating in the founding of the United Nations in San Francisco in 1945. Additionally, the exhibit celebrated the diverse workforce that built the new western span of the Bay Bridge. Local artists, photographers, and poets inspired by these stories created art that explored both the history and the contemporary relevance of the themes. The Berkeley History Center is in the Veterans Memorial Building, 1931 Center Street, Berkeley. History Center hours are 1-4 PM, Thursday through Saturday. Admission is free (donations welcome); wheelchair accessible. The History Center will be open the Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 23 and 24. View this email in your browser The Art of Living Black returns for the 23rd year at the Richmond Art Center The longest running annual exhibition in the Bay Area to exclusively feature artists of African descent. November 20, 2018 ¡ª RICHMOND, CA ¡ª The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black is coming! As the longest running event of its kind in the Bay Area to feature artists of African descent, The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black will present an exhibition of over 100 works at the Richmond Art Center (January 15 ¨C March 8, 2019), as well as Open Studios and Satellite Exhibitions at locations across the Bay Area. The public is invited to an opening reception at the Richmond Art Center on Saturday, February 2, from 2:00-5:00 pm. From 12:30-2:00 pm, the reception will be preceded by an Artist Talk by Spotlight Artists: Tomy¨¦, Stephanie Thames, and Karin Turner-karinsArt. Thames creates inspirational ceramic sculpture, Karin Turner offers luscious figurative paintings, and Tomy¨¦ fabricates fused slumped glass portraits. On Saturday, February 9, from 12:00-2:00pm, special guest speaker Joyce Gordon will present and announce the 2020 Spotlight award winners. The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black Open Studios Guide will be available in mid-January 2019 for art lovers to design their own self-guided tours of Open Studios and Satellite Exhibitions. Open Studio events will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 23 & 24 and March 2 & 3, 10:00am-6:00pm. The Art of Living Black was founded in 1997 by sculptor Jan Hart-Schuyers and painter Rae Louise Hayward after their realization that black artists were not being represented by galleries in any significant way. As Hart-Schuyers said at the time, ¡°We¡¯re just a group of artists that share the same dream. We¡¯ve decided to do something about it.¡± And they did. Since its founding 23 years ago, The Art of Living Black has featured hundreds of emerging and established artists: showcasing their work, introducing them to new patrons and audiences, and building a creative community of artists and art lovers. Tragically Hart-Schuyers passed away in 1998 and Hayward died in 2008. However, their organizing efforts were carried on for many years by their husbands Henri Schuyers and Steven Hopkins, and Steven¡¯s sister Melba Lazenby, who passed away in 2013. The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black is organized by a Steering Committee in partnership with the Richmond Art Center. The Art Of Living Black Steering Committee is a dedicated group of established Bay Area artists touched by the vision of Hart-Shuyers and Hayward. Their mission is to preserve and expand the vision of their beloved founders by supporting emerging, mid-career and established artists of African descent. ¡°The Art of Living Black is a hallmark event in the Bay Area for artists of African descent,¡± says Stephen Bruce, artist and Steering Committee Chair. ¡°The Open Studios and Satellite Exhibitions provide a fantastic opportunity for the public to interact with artists and make a personal connection.¡± As one of the artists who participated from the beginning, Spotlight Artist awardee Tomy¨¦ says of The Art of Living Black, ¡°I believe staying the course with your talents is rewarding, and who knew, twenty-two years later I would be honored with The Art Of Living Black Best of Show Award. Practice, patience and presume the best outcomes for yourself.¡± The Art of Living Black Artist Registration Deadline: Thursday, December 20, 2018 (midnight) Exhibition: January 15 ¨C March 8, 2019 Open Studios: Saturday and Sunday, February 23 & 24 and March 2 & 3, 10:00 am ¨C 6:00 pm Spotlight Artist Talk: Saturday, February 2, 12:30 pm ¨C 2:00 pm Reception: Saturday, February 2, 2:00 pm ¨C 5:00 pm Featured Speaker Talk: Saturday, February 9, from 12:00 ¨C 2:00pm For more information about The Art of Living Black, please visit: The Art of Living Black: theartoflivingblack.com Richmond Art Center: richmondartcenter.org About the Richmond Art Center: The Richmond Art Center is the largest visual arts center in the East Bay delivering exciting arts experiences to young and old alike who reflect the diverse richness of our community.
