Description
Local author Mara Melandry will speak about her book, "Our Paradise: Berkeley's Fabulous Family Camps" at the Berkeley Historical society, followed by light refreshments and a book signing. Melandry is a member of the Berkeley Historical Society and a long-time Berkeley resident and Cal graduate. She researched the history of Berkeley’s beloved family camps – Tuolumne, Echo Lake and Cazadero – from their beginnings in the 1920s to today.
The book chronicles why city leaders first established the camps, unearths remarkable and entertaining stories from throughout the camps' decades, and describes their wonderful and wacky traditions. The camps' histories are set against the historical context of the Great Depression, World War II, and the tumultuous 1960s.
